Replace diets with correct eating

I lost forty pounds plus some thirty years ago and have never gained it back. Hubby on the other hand doesn't gain but just didn't have any incentive to lose. After watching the PBS special on THE HIDDEN Epidemic and finally realizing that his HDL was indeed a problem, he changed his mind. Using Lisa Youngs book The Portion Teller and a cookbook by Zonya Foca, he is finally losing weight and even I have dropped a few more pounds. It seems almost effortless. Just a matter of not fibbing on how much you eat. If your PBS station carries it, I highly recommend Zonya BItes or check her website at www.zonya.com. I love that cookbook but she has recipes there for anyone to sample.

Ruthie is right that is what WW's is all about~~they do not call it a diet it is a Life Style change. And on WW's nothing is forbidden. You just need to watch your portion sizes.

Well, my bachelor interlude is ending. This morning I'm flying to the Bay Area to join SWMBO and dear son who have been gallivanting around NorCal and SoCal, visiting friends, Universal Studios, museums, whatnot. I'll hang out in Berkeley for a couple days before driving home with them on Thursday. Hopefully I'll find a place to watch the Tour de France as it is about to move into the mountain stages. I'll also be working some - "have laptop will travel" you know. Maybe someone will loan me a bike to take a ride or two. When I get back, it's straight to Seattle for the Seattle-To-Portland ride next Saturday and Sunday. That should be fun, or painful, or both. I've neglected to make any lodging arrangements at the overnight stop in Centralia, but am figuring I can camp somewhere. I've alerted the office that I am play-it-by-ear as far as coming in on the following Monday goes. It has been a bit less than three weeks of a diet of minimal grains, lots of fruit and meat, and the occasional vegetable. Missed my usual bachelor fare of ramen and burritos, never had time to make myself a plate of boeuf hache, but I haven't starved. I've ridden about 200 miles, lost a couple of pounds, made two batches of beef jerky, and sent dear daughter several parcels and multiple letters. Hey, Eileen, I didn't get your email. As PP mentioned above, the average joe just doesn't care - they load the machine, drop in a dose of detergent (and in a lot of cases, actually overdose above what the manufacture states) comeback to wet clothes to move to the dryer and as long as look and smell clean - they're happy/not bothered. However, for those who do care, it becomes just like chemistry - everybodys laundry is completely different: detergent type, water type/temp/level, machine type, cycle type/temp, load size, fabric type in the load (and what's loaded in together or not), stain types and even down to how long an article has gone between last wash, what its been subjected to, and even what its made of (2 items of 100% cotton could be different due to manufacturing processes and dyes etc) - I'm waffling, but this list won't even be all that's at play. Detergent manufacturers are a business, they need to make money; they have stakeholders, employees, suppliers, contractors and marketers to pay - so they must drive value and revenues. Don't' suppose it'll ever be proven (or ever admitted), but it's in their interest to give customers what they're happy with/what is acceptable, whilst maximising revenue - end of the day, if they dont make money, what are they doing it for? I did read somewhere (and I wish I could remember where) that a certain big manufacturer of a very famous detergent was starting to see revenues drop to a level below what they were aiming for/happy with, and it was centred around the launch of single dose detergents - on the one hand, they carry a premium price tag and it guarantees that a user gets no more than the stated amount of loads - but what they actually found was customers weren't purchasing detergent at the store as often due to the fact that compared to when the same users were using powder/liquid format, the overdoing (just dumping 1 full cap in) was causing people to repeat purchase more often than that of pod users. And what do you know, the dosing recommendations for pods were increased - going from 1 pod for any load, to 1 for medium, 2 for large and 3 for high capacity/extra dirty. The same has now become true of liquids - dose increased - line 1 for medium, 3 for large and line 5 for "full he loads" as "they are a higher capacity than standard top loaders and of course more clothes = more dirt)" --their tag line-- All this in a time when detergents are becoming more "concentrated" and front loaders use as much as a quarter the amount of water than that of a TL. Now how can detergents be being concentrated, Used in machines that use less water (which is what will ultimately determine the strength of the solution that detergents are dissolved within) and the doses are going up? Add this to the fact that washer manufacturers often say use less than recommended. Makes you think.

I'm home, and sadly didn't do really well at the beach. We went out to eat only twice and I did have grilled amberjack so that wasn't bad, but the key lime pie was not so good (actually it was wonderful, that was the problem). We did have fresh fruit and salad with each meal and I avoided fried foods all week, but I did break down and have a wine cooler on the beach at night. Managed to get lots of exercise walking up and down the beach. They have dredged sand and replaced most of the beach and it was just full of shells. We collected 30 each of 5 kinds and 20 of another for SIL's sisters 2nd grade class. We got many, many others but not enough for each student, so those will go on a display for the room. It was actually hard to get into the water for the shells on the beach. By Wed most of them had been covered with sand and you could walk better, so we did. Laura you seem to be doing so very well. I'm proud of you. Keep up the good work. Isn't Splenda the greatest stuff!! Glassquilt, you sound like me. When I worked for the Air Force I would fix at least 10 cups of coffee a day, and only get to drink 1 or 2. But mine was mostly just an excuse to get up from my desk for a while. How did you do Jennifer? Did you make it thru the week? There are many books available to help with the calorie counting and the diet organizer is a really good aid too. You can put in your own recipes if you want and it will figure the calories for you. Way to go scraphappy. Only 7 more pounds. I do hope the other 3 didn't find you. I do find it easier to take my own snacks. Those fast food ones are killers. I guess I need to weigh and see just how bad I was last week. I'll check back in later. beverly

Or use a nutrition tracker like DietPower or SparkPeople to keep track of your calories, nutrients, & exercise. Thanks for the tip about Zonya Bites. I'd not heard of it before. The white beans & penne dish on her web site looks like a great Lenten meal. Hmmm, in fact, I'll try it tonight!

BTW, I'm happy to call my daily eating habits a diet. My diet consists of healthy foods in reasonable portions. In the long run, semantics mean nothing; action is everything.

I lost 14 lb a couple months ago, I have maintained the loss the same way I lost it by making better food choices such as veggie sticks with my lunch rather than chips and I found sticks keep you full longer and help in the bathroom dept. lol I like my sandwiches opened face or make my own lunchables. Portions are under control. My so and I go out to eat we order one entree and an extra soup or salad, I just tip like I ordered two meals It has been so easy. I still lurk and like both ww and ss sites, you all give each other such kind support. Joann

truthfully.......Most plans are just that anymore..they are not diets but assistance in making the right choices...and truthfully, I think lots of people need the help...but also the motivation of a plan...Nearly all the plans I have studied are about eating right, and making the right choices.

I have been looking for the little electronic WW Calculator. I have found them on Ebay at three times the price from WW meeting. The problem is they are out and for some reason it is going to take them 3 mo. to get them in again. Any suggestions. I talked to a lady at one of the meetings and she uses hers all the time. It is about 3 inches square.

I definitely agree with lifestyle changes, but I have to admit I agree with diets, too. 2 years ago I started an 800 calorie a day diet and lost 87# in 7-8 months. I then transitioned off the diet to regular food, but continued my small portions and still to this day I eat 5 small meals daily. To date I have lost 103#. So I have to say that a diet got me started, but that a permanent life style change and exercise have helped me maintain.

Congrats onyxdaily....that's a lot of hard work...what was an average 800 calorie day made up of in the way of food...that sounds so restricted that it makes me wonder what you ate?

I started the diet doing a program called medifast. I would drink a shake at 6am, oatmeal at 9am, soup or tuna salad at noon, protein bar at 3pm, then 4-5 ounces of lean meat plus a vegetable serving at 6pm, then another shake at 9pm (or bedtime). All the meals except the 6pm dinner were meals I purchased from medifast, but when I transitioned off their program, I knew I wanted to lose more weight, so I pretty much eat the same things now, just with products I buy at the store. I replaced the shakes with either 8oz skim milk or 8oz lite soy milk. I replaced the oatmeal with yogurt or kashi cereal. For lunch I usually eat packaged tuna, canned chicken or lite cottage cheese, plus veggies, for the protein bar I eat different low carb low fat store bought bars. I still eat lean meat and veggies for supper. I know it may not sound like alot of food, but really I felt and still feel like I'm always eating. It's just a plan that really works for me because I pretty much never get hungry so I have much less tendancy to snack on something that I shouldn't have.

That sounds like a good plan to me...and I have learned that you have to figure out what is best for yourself for it to work....
