Wildly popular food blogs?

I stumbled upon the pioneer woman blog and was surprised I had never heard of it before. One of the descriptions, maybe on amazon, called it wildly popular.

Any other wildly popular recipe blogs I am missing out on?

I especially like that hers has step by step photos, and the recipes are fairly straightforward.

I didn't like thorny and non-fragrant (to me) Darlow's Enigma when I had it -- and I didn't like Distant Drums when I saw it growing in the BBG, though other folks were mad for it for a while. Most of the others mentioned here I do like, or at least don't mind, including Hot Cocoa, which I actually find rather beautiful. To me Double Delight is beautiful as a cut flower and the fragrance is fantastic. I think almost any rose can be made to look beautiful in the right spot and with the right conditions and companions. I have even reconciled myself to Knockout because it is so cheerful and willing in public plantings. One gets more mellow with age. I now look back with nostalgia on Circus, which used to be so despised, it grew in everyone's shady back yard when I lived in Philly along Trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliatus) and required no care. Now it has disappeared. Also Peace and Tiffany. Ah, well, fashions come and go.

Lynxe, this is getting really redundant. It's not a question of whether one can compensate for the deficiency. I suppose if one wanted to, they could live on nothing but supplements. Those on that very low calorie diet trying to hyper extend longevity essentially do that. But that is not to say it's optimal for good health or sustainable by the vast majority of people. As I said before, the issue is that the strict vegan diet, by itself is not complete. Meaning that it is not fundamentally consistent with the full nutritional requirements of the human body as it has evolved over the past tens of thousands of years. This, on its face says that it is not optimum. Further, as I said before, we know about the need for B-12, and the challenges of adequate protein, iron, zinc, iodine, DHA, calcium in following that diet. But it's what we don't know that's missing in that diet that could be harmful. We went for decades lauding a low to no fat diet and it wasn't until they looked deeper into the kinds of fats and the metabolism of those fats and things like essential fatty acids that they realized the low/no fat diet was not optimum. Not only for the required fats, but also for the sustainability of the diet as fats help keep one from feeling hungry. Further the replacement of fats with sugars, as many food cos. did to try to keep their food palatable, was very damaging to the waistline and blood sugar levels. Moreover, on a personal level, I never went vegetarian but approached that and found myself not doing well as I wasn't getting adequate protein (suffered hair loss and weak nails) and I was getting excess carbs which showed up as belly fat and cellulite. When I went back to eating a more balanced diet, all of that improved as well as my muscle tone and energy levels. I know quite a few other people who tried vegetarianism and went back. I know others who have tried veganism and went back to vegetarianism because they felt better and were doing better. You can argue that it was because they weren't doing it right, but the reality is, given how much time and effort they were willing to put into it, including some animal products in their diet was more effective and sustainable for them. If veganism works well for you, then that's wonderful. If you're willing to invest the time and effort to get sufficient variety/supplementation to keep your diet complete, that's great. I'm happy with whatever works for anyone that keeps them healthier. But given that only 2% of Americans are even self-described as vegan (and we don't know how many of those are long-term vs. dabblers) and given the nutritional risks/effort required to maintain health on that restrictive a diet, as well as the anecdotal experience of those who have tried it especially for the long term, I believe it is not the best diet for the vast majority of people. -------------------- This video discusses multigenerational veganism, or the lack thereof. I can think of three ways to meet your budget: 1) Go to a place that installs modular carpet for a living (usually "commercial interiors" or flooring-only stores, not mom & pop shops or big-box stores) and ask about remnants. These are tiles left over from some big job and they often are for sale at a good discount from new. You may have to be flexible and/or patient about colors/patterns. 2) There are some places on the Internet that carry modular, especially odd lots/remnants. There was one posted here some time ago that seemed to carry primarily Lee modular which seemed pretty decent; the post might still be here if you search for the phrase carpet tile in this forum (if it has scrolled off, let me know and I'll see if I kept a copy of the thread. I didn't post the name but I commented in the thread). Be sure to ask about the cost of adhesive, if required, and shipping and include that in your total. Again, flexibility in color/pattern is your friend. With only a couple hundred square feet to cover, FLOR might be pretty competitive with other brands, especially since you don't need adhesive with FLOR. 3) I had about 1,000 square feet to cover. That pretty much left out remnants. I found Mannington Commercial offered a pattern called ArtCraft that has a 100% recycled face (they gather leftover fibers from other carpet production runs and use them to make a patchwork/stained glass kind of pattern). The 100% recycling and "goes-with-everything" pattern appealed to me, but so did the price: about $2.70/sq. ft., about half the cost of the carpet I used elsewhere. Add $60-70 for adhesive (a 5-gallon pail that was twice what I needed) and I was set. ArtCraft should be a regular-order item. Keep in mind that modular carpet from a good mill (that's almost anyone that isn't selling foam-backed peel & stick tile for 99 cents each) will wear for a good long time. The stuff I used is similar to what they put in the local airport, and it survives eight years of traffic, wheeled luggage, spilled food and drink, etc., before it's replaced, so it ought to last forever in my home. Compare that to the kind of wear you'd get from that broadloom at Lowe's or Roth. Modular may cost you some more, but you should get more life out of it. A couple hundred bucks will be rather tight, but it can be done if you're willing to do some legwork. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I have usually made toffee (recipe below), but when I had pecans from my family in Texas, I would make chocolate turtles, using a Madeleine mold, but they were very labor intensive. Toffee 1 2/3 c raw almonds, (7.5 oz) 1 c unsalted butter 1 1/2 c sugar 3 Tbs. light corn syrup 3 Tbs. Water 12 oz. bittersweet chocolate Place almonds on a cookie sheet and toast in 350ÃÂ° oven for about 15 minutes, stirring every five minutes. Chop the almonds, and then sort out the larger pieces into a one-cup measuring cup. Save the finer pieces in two 1/3 cup measuring cups. Combine butter, sugar, corn syrup and water in a medium-size heavy saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, to 300ÃÂ°F on candy thermometer. This may take a while if the room is extremely humid. In a dry kitchen, it may take only 15-20 minutes. (A teaspoonful of syrup will separate into brittle threads when dropped in cold water; the color of the mixture will be like peanut butter or caramel at this point.) Remove from heat, and stir in the cup of coarser almond pieces. Pour into a buttered 13x9x2" pan, spreading quickly and evenly - you can shake and tilt the pan to distribute the mixture. Cool the mixture, but not until brittle. Turn out onto waxed paper, and return to the pan with the waxed paper underneath. Melt chocolate in the top of a double boiler over hot water; remove from heat. Spread half the melted chocolate over top of candy; sprinkle with 1/3 cup nuts; allow to cool for about 20 minutes, or until chocolate has set. Turn candy over and spread with remaining chocolate and sprinkle with remaining nuts. Let stand until set in refrigerator or freezer. Break into pieces. Makes l-1/2 pounds. *Note: you can use a somewhat larger pan or combination of pans instead of the 13x9Ã¢ÂÂ if you want the candy to be thinner, but you may need more chocolate and nuts for topping. **Make sure you do not add any salt to this or use salted nuts, or else it will taste like peanut brittle. Almonds are traditional, but you can substitute hazelnuts or Brazil nuts and get similar results. Lars

I just discovered Pioneer Woman myself from a mention on this forum, and I am enjoying her. My other two favorites are leitesculinaria.com and Thibeault's Table -- which is very popular in my circle of friends who do not post to the CF.

I'm not sure that I would consider Luxirare or Granny Miller traditional food blogs. In fact, Granny Miller describes itself as more of a political blog.

Regarding Ann's blog, as an avid follower of it myself, I know she's had well over 150,000 visitors in less than a year, with 138 other bloggers subscribing to her blog, as well as hundreds of others who follow her blog on a daily basis. Hardly numbers that could be quantified primarily via CFers. And Tastespotting and Foodgawker were mentioned (a couple of my favorites, as well), Ann has had over 200 of her photos accepted by those two sites. No more cheap shots, ok?! ;D

Perhaps what some of you don't realize is that this Forum is one of the more serious cooking foodie sites on the web, and most of the bloggers who also post here don't toot their own horn, so how would you know?

..........and if you haven't visited Lori's blog All That Splatters yet, you are in for a real treat. Lori has thousands of visitors to her blog and over a 100 followers and you will find many of her photos on both Tastespotting and Foodgawker. I don't consider TS or FG a blog, but they are a great resource. I've found so many wonderful blogs through them.

And lets not forget Sol's Memories in Baking another CF blogger with a huge following.

Also try Serious Eats. Not a cooking blog, but a number of writers, they pick up articles from other sources, just good food items. It changes during the day, new things come up all the time. Just a general foodie fun site.

I will freely admit that I am not a loyal blog follower, that said some of the best that I do visit infrequently are Thibaults Table and Memories in Baking, I am in awe of the gorgeous photos of beautifully prepared food. A friend has recommended PW but I just seem to forget about checking it. Granny Miller is entertaining, but since she stopped posting last May there doesn;t seem to be a lot of reaason to keep checking it.

Isn't Tastespotting the one where someone stole one of AnnTs photos and used it as her own and didn;t even have the right recipe to match? Maybe it wasn't, but I do rmember that from a few months ago......

I rarely read blogs; I barely have time for this forum, but someone here one time pointed out Orangette, which I occasionally read. It's very good. I'll have to check out Ann and Lori's blogs, too. My sil got the Pioneer Woman's cookbook, and loves her blog. I might have to check it out, too, some day, but gosh, where do y'all find the time to read all these blogs? lol Maybe I'm just too a.d.d.

I forget to look at blogs; this site is my only regular ccoking stop on the net. I do enjoy Chocolate and Zucchini. People mention Orangette a lot, but the one recipe I made from her site was a banana bread so bad we threw it out.

I became disenchanted with Pioneer Woman's Blog....never check it anymore. When they become very commercial, I loose interest. I know it is their prerogative to make money and promote themselves....that just isn't what appeals to me.

I will take AnnT's blog anyday!!

Now I will be checking those listed here.

I love bread blogs too.

I started a Blog, just a daily journal of my particular life. This winter it has morphed more into a food blog.
I now know what a lot of time is involved with them. So I do appreciate them more.

I like to read many of the blogs mentioned, but yes it is time consuming! And really, there are SO MANY excellent blogs out there.

And yes, Carol has a very nice blog too!

Like Alexa I have to admit not having gone to the blogasphere. I am woefully behind the times when it comes to blogs, and social networking sites.

If you try to post a reply too soon after you made another post to the same thread, the system seems to want you to change the title of the thread in your response. A quirk, I guess, and I don't know how long the interim is before that isn't in effect. You can change the title with just a / or a (.), too. This is really antiquated forum software! ;-o

The good thing about that posting quirk is that it makes it harder for bots to spam with mulitple messages.

One day I looked at my bookmarks and realized I had several HUNDRED sites marked, and I seldom visited most of them. I deleted them all except the ones I went to every week. Part of my decluttering goals. Just because they didn't take up any space doesn't mean they weren't clutter. :)

I'm one of the people who just can't find time to check the blogs, I almost never read them. I did read Pioneer Woman a couple of times, but as has been mentioned, as soon as they start selling stuff, I'm out of there, it just becomes a commercial.

I don't have any interest at all in starting a blog. Probably a throw back from high school when I didn't keep a diary either and I've never had a journal for more than two days. I don't do Facebook or chat rooms or instant messages either.

Sally, you are definitely not alone, by the time I check in here and answer my email, that's all the time I have. Somehow my full time job plus farming takes a lot of my time and any extra time I have I want to spend playing with The Princess.

Hey, maybe she'll grow up and make me a blog...

L2C46, You can start a blog in about ten minutes for free using Blogger, Xanga, LiveJounral or a number of other sites. (I think TypePad now charges a nominal fee.) The free accounts do have limits (storage, traffic bandwidth, etc.) but they are usually generous enough for the casual user. Heck, I think I know more people with blogs than without them now. LOL!

If you're trying to make it a money-making venture (like Pioneer Woman or Leites, then, yes, it costs money. There's hosting fees, URL registrations, storage fees, a bunch a bunch of other things that are each small but can add up.

Really, it can cost as much or as little as you want it to, but the more popular the blog, the higher the chance it will cost money. A lot of these people who are now trying to turn their blogs into profit centers are often trying to cover the costs of becoming popular. We have this mindset that if something is on the internet, it should be free, and the truth is it costs money to run these services.
