Wildly popular food blogs?

I stumbled upon the pioneer woman blog and was surprised I had never heard of it before. One of the descriptions, maybe on amazon, called it wildly popular.

Any other wildly popular recipe blogs I am missing out on?

I especially like that hers has step by step photos, and the recipes are fairly straightforward.

I've always wondered how maple leaves and syrup became such iconic symbols of Canada, since that tree won't grow in most of the country, certainly not here on the prairies. Oh well, we do have lots of beavers, even in the city, although I've never eaten one.... As a country of immigrants (or the descendants of immigrants), I'd say we tend to eat what is familiar, or failing that, what is available. My parents grew up here in Calgary in the '20s and '30s, when the only veggies eaten in the winter were potatoes, carrots, onions, and cabbage. Being mostly of UK descent, there was NEVER garlic in the house. No olive oil either. The fats of choice were butter, lard, and bacon grease. Mashed potatoes with every meal. I had never heard of, let alone eaten a bagel until I visited Montreal as a college student. But times change. Nowadays, pasta and rice are staples, not ethnic food. Hey, curries are pretty mainstream, as are perogies. I'm surprised how many folks I encounter don't know how to make mashed potatoes, although I think it was the New Brunswick bros McCain who invented oven fries, and everyone knows those. Tim Horton's has been much more successful than any political party in uniting the country as a national institution. I still remember when he was a hockey player...

Thanks for the link Annie, I checked it out, and as of the date of that article, Seminis did sell to Territorial and Johnny's as well as Fedco. It could be that a couple of the brassicas I just bought from Fedco, as well as the Lollo Rosa lettuce from Burpee could have come from Seminis. I will have to call the companies and check. Part of the reason eggs are refrigerated in the United States is because they keep better for a longer period of time if refrigerated. If I keep freshly gathered eggs on my counter, they are still safe and delicious for days, even weeks after being laid. But if those same eggs are refrigerated, they are still usable for months. In fact, Amanda just pulled out a dozen of last fall's eggs, stuck in the back of her refrigerator. I figure she had them since probably late October. We're going on 6 months now, and she cracked a couple for muffins and they were still fine, although the whites were runny and the yolks broke easily. She hasn't found any that were actually spoiled, and my extension service contact once told me that eggs usually don't get "rotten", they dry up. When you purchase commercial eggs at the store, they are already weeks old, so longer storage times are critical to stores. I often leave freshly gathered eggs on the counter for use, and I do not wash them until I'm ready to use them. If they are very dirty, I can't help myself, I wash them and put those in the refrigerator. Right now I have 7 dozen eggs in the fridge and a couple dozen more on the counter. Annie

I've never been divorced. (How few people can say that these days! LOL) I've never been married. (Came close a couple times and turned down a proposal!) No cable/satellite and don't want it. I think a vehicle is for transportation, not a status symbol. My current vehicle is 10+ years old. I haven't had a car payment in nearly 40 years. (I had a 9 month loan on the first new vehicle I bought and haven't had a vehicle loan since.) I pay cash for my vehicles. Since some are so cheap these days, I believe everyone should have a cell phone for emergencies. There's nearly no pay phones so if an emergency should arise you should be able to call for help. I think it's strange someone would be so luddite on their safety. But it's their choice. Basic prepaid cell phone for me Seriously dislike what's called "country" music. I do like what I refer to as "mountain music" I listen to news stations in the vehicle. Seldom listen to music in a vehicle. I stay home when weather is bad and people shouldn't be on the roads. I don't get into holidays, the hoopla and the fake love and fake generosity out there. Don't like most "reality" shows. Don't like talk shows. Don't like shows with hosts that are part-time doctors in just certain areas. I won't name names. Can't stand Judge Judy. Her schtick got old a long, long time ago. I buy clothes to serve a function, not for looks. T-shirts should have a pocket in them! I don't take an annual vacation. I happen to enjoy my home. Don't need to get away from it. I proudly use credit cards and more proudly pay them off every month. And very happily deposit the cashback and say thank you. Pets I've had have all been ones who needed a home. I detest puppy mills and fashion pet shops. So much more but that's enough for now.

I just discovered Pioneer Woman myself from a mention on this forum, and I am enjoying her. My other two favorites are leitesculinaria.com and Thibeault's Table -- which is very popular in my circle of friends who do not post to the CF.

I'm not sure that I would consider Luxirare or Granny Miller traditional food blogs. In fact, Granny Miller describes itself as more of a political blog.

Regarding Ann's blog, as an avid follower of it myself, I know she's had well over 150,000 visitors in less than a year, with 138 other bloggers subscribing to her blog, as well as hundreds of others who follow her blog on a daily basis. Hardly numbers that could be quantified primarily via CFers. And Tastespotting and Foodgawker were mentioned (a couple of my favorites, as well), Ann has had over 200 of her photos accepted by those two sites. No more cheap shots, ok?! ;D

and many others. Tastespotting and Foodgawker have introduced me to several other interesting blogs, too. There are a world of food blogs out there!! :D

And Arabella Miller's....but unfortunatly I lost a bunch of bookmarks....and our own San has an amazing blog.
Perhaps what some of you don't realize is that this Forum is one of the more serious cooking foodie sites on the web, and most of the bloggers who also post here don't toot their own horn, so how would you know?

..........and if you haven't visited Lori's blog All That Splatters yet, you are in for a real treat. Lori has thousands of visitors to her blog and over a 100 followers and you will find many of her photos on both Tastespotting and Foodgawker. I don't consider TS or FG a blog, but they are a great resource. I've found so many wonderful blogs through them.

And lets not forget Sol's Memories in Baking another CF blogger with a huge following.

Also try Serious Eats. Not a cooking blog, but a number of writers, they pick up articles from other sources, just good food items. It changes during the day, new things come up all the time. Just a general foodie fun site.

I will freely admit that I am not a loyal blog follower, that said some of the best that I do visit infrequently are Thibaults Table and Memories in Baking, I am in awe of the gorgeous photos of beautifully prepared food. A friend has recommended PW but I just seem to forget about checking it. Granny Miller is entertaining, but since she stopped posting last May there doesn;t seem to be a lot of reaason to keep checking it.

Isn't Tastespotting the one where someone stole one of AnnTs photos and used it as her own and didn;t even have the right recipe to match? Maybe it wasn't, but I do rmember that from a few months ago......

I rarely read blogs; I barely have time for this forum, but someone here one time pointed out Orangette, which I occasionally read. It's very good. I'll have to check out Ann and Lori's blogs, too. My sil got the Pioneer Woman's cookbook, and loves her blog. I might have to check it out, too, some day, but gosh, where do y'all find the time to read all these blogs? lol Maybe I'm just too a.d.d.

Besides the ones mentioned above, my personal fav is Joy of Baking. And I also enjoy David Leibovitz, Orangette, Stephencooks, Smitten Kitchen, Ezra Poundcake, Noble Pig, and Brown Eyed Baker.

I forget to look at blogs; this site is my only regular ccoking stop on the net. I do enjoy Chocolate and Zucchini. People mention Orangette a lot, but the one recipe I made from her site was a banana bread so bad we threw it out.

I became disenchanted with Pioneer Woman's Blog....never check it anymore. When they become very commercial, I loose interest. I know it is their prerogative to make money and promote themselves....that just isn't what appeals to me.

I will take AnnT's blog anyday!!

Now I will be checking those listed here.

I love bread blogs too.

I started a Blog, just a daily journal of my particular life. This winter it has morphed more into a food blog.
I now know what a lot of time is involved with them. So I do appreciate them more.

I agree with gldno1. Once they start selling things I am not as interested.

I like to read many of the blogs mentioned, but yes it is time consuming! And really, there are SO MANY excellent blogs out there.

And yes, Carol has a very nice blog too!
I like it when the blogger's personality shines through.

Like Alexa I have to admit not having gone to the blogasphere. I am woefully behind the times when it comes to blogs, and social networking sites.

However now I have all these recommendations I may just have to spend a snowy day blogging......

If you try to post a reply too soon after you made another post to the same thread, the system seems to want you to change the title of the thread in your response. A quirk, I guess, and I don't know how long the interim is before that isn't in effect. You can change the title with just a / or a (.), too. This is really antiquated forum software! ;-o

The good thing about that posting quirk is that it makes it harder for bots to spam with mulitple messages.

One day I looked at my bookmarks and realized I had several HUNDRED sites marked, and I seldom visited most of them. I deleted them all except the ones I went to every week. Part of my decluttering goals. Just because they didn't take up any space doesn't mean they weren't clutter. :)

I'm one of the people who just can't find time to check the blogs, I almost never read them. I did read Pioneer Woman a couple of times, but as has been mentioned, as soon as they start selling stuff, I'm out of there, it just becomes a commercial.

I don't have any interest at all in starting a blog. Probably a throw back from high school when I didn't keep a diary either and I've never had a journal for more than two days. I don't do Facebook or chat rooms or instant messages either.

Sally, you are definitely not alone, by the time I check in here and answer my email, that's all the time I have. Somehow my full time job plus farming takes a lot of my time and any extra time I have I want to spend playing with The Princess.

Hey, maybe she'll grow up and make me a blog...

L2C46, You can start a blog in about ten minutes for free using Blogger, Xanga, LiveJounral or a number of other sites. (I think TypePad now charges a nominal fee.) The free accounts do have limits (storage, traffic bandwidth, etc.) but they are usually generous enough for the casual user. Heck, I think I know more people with blogs than without them now. LOL!

If you're trying to make it a money-making venture (like Pioneer Woman or Leites, then, yes, it costs money. There's hosting fees, URL registrations, storage fees, a bunch a bunch of other things that are each small but can add up.

Really, it can cost as much or as little as you want it to, but the more popular the blog, the higher the chance it will cost money. A lot of these people who are now trying to turn their blogs into profit centers are often trying to cover the costs of becoming popular. We have this mindset that if something is on the internet, it should be free, and the truth is it costs money to run these services.
