Help! Things to do with pre-teens?

Due to a family emergency, I will be having my 12 year old niece and 9 year old nephew staying with me for at least a week. It's their school vacation week, and their parents were planning a fun week for them.

Instead, they will now be 500 miles from home and an hour away from their parents and their older sibling, who needs major surgery. Stuck with a 50 year old aunt who doesn't have kids and doesn't have much for kids to do in her house.

Any suggestions on what kids their ages might like to do in the middle of a New Hampshire winter?

Their parents try to keep them away from "screens" (tv, iPods, video games) as much as possible, so a visit to the library to pick up some books is planned. And some trips to the hospital to see their brother.

But I'd love it if anyone could suggest some craft activities or the like that might keep them occupied. School vacation here isn't until next week--tons of special activities all over the place then, not so much this week.
