Yea - about 6 moths ago they closed the one not far from me and made the one 40 min away a Super store instead. oh well.....

Chase, our local Wal-mart stores are always pathetic. Now they have just opened a Mammoth Wal-mart (same as Wal-Mart Supercenter) in Calgary, I may go there to just check it out. Have to drive 45 minutes to get there... wonder if it's even worth my time. Al

Amazing!!! I would be very curious as to who their supplier is....and how long it's been "on the road" so to speak.....and even more curious as to how sales go.
Just to make you feel bad....it's $19.99 for a 2 pound wheel at the grocery store here....and Wal-Mart doesn't carry it....but the gas station does!!

LindaC, I can get Maytag Blue in the little shops in Grand Rapids too, it's available at that big new Meijer's there. I think it was somewhere around $18 a pound there.

Al, I was a bit tongue in cheek about checking out Walmart; something about that place annoys me.

I prefer to do my discount shopping at Zellers. Even thought it's now American owned : ( ...... I still feel it's more Canadian. But I can guarantee you they won't have Maytag or, for that matter, probably any blue cheese!

The world's largest WalMart (well it sure seems big, they even have paint department the size of Sherwin Williams) just opened 3 miles from me and I went out of curiosity. They are carrying a lot of surprises like Graber olives. I'll have to look for Maytag Blue.

LOL Annie, I agree! It's not really that far away but with bad traffic that's how long it will take to get there. If I go during non busy hours it may take me 1/2 hour or so.

Chase, Wal-Mart is like a completely different store once it crosses the border. I don't just want to go look for cheese. It's more curiosity than shopping. I remember staying with my friends in Texas 7 years ago. There was a Wal-Mart Supercenter not too far from their house. Went shopping with them and wow it was really an one stop shopping trip. They got pretty much everything under the sun. Wal-Mart stores here... you will be lucky if they carry the things that they have on their flyers! LOL

Angelaid, it is a blue cheese, made at the Maytag Dairy Farms in Iowa.

Like, REAL Maytag Blue? We don't have food markets in our WalMarts here.

This is a sort of mini super store I guess. There is a regular Walmart that has been here for many years on the other side of town. It does not have groceries such as produce, fresh meat, or a deli. It just has packaged goods and some cold box goods.

This store is close to me which is why I go there now and then. I can't imagine making a special drive to unless no one else had Maytag Blue! It has a little bit of a lot of stuff but not a deep selection. They have a LOT of processed foods, frozen and otherwise. All of the fish is frozen. Maybe their shopper demographic simply doesn't buy enough fresh fish to keep it from going bad. I was surprised to see Maytag Blue as they have a really small selection of good cheeses.

Quite a few stores here sell Maytag Blue. All priced about the same and packaged in tiny little wedges that I can eat in one sitting with a nice glass of wine. I might be able to get a larger wedge at one particular store which has a large fine cheese department.

those tiny little wedges are the most expensive way to buy it. They are wrapped by hand. There is a whole platoon of little old blue haired ladies who wrap wedges!

When the super Wal mart opened here about 10 years ago, that first 6 months they had an amazing variety of products. I could get many different kinds of flour. Matzoa ( and in a town with maybe 3 Jewish familys, that's amazing!) a great assortment of olive oils, lamb chops and ground lamb...it was great!
Then they figured out who they were and where they were and now carry an assortment of Mexican foods and peppers, corn husks, queso blanco, crema....and no lamb and now they have even discontinued carrying Ecce Pane bread....
I guess they stock what sells.....and time will tell if the Maytag blue sells.

LOL... some guys bought all the cell phones they had at 2 in the morning. Seemed odd enough the police were called and the Prosecutor charged them with being terrorists. Turned out they were not really terrorists. Seems cell phones cost different prices in different places so these guys were just making money buying them in one State and selling them in another. Lots of mean jokes about the Prosecutor after that... he will continue to get re-elected anyways.

Local Wallyworld employees are terrible about keeping things in stock. It took six months and a complaint to a friend that works there for them to restock work pants in my size. I was going to buy a camera they had on display but they had none in stock for weeks. Finally I asked and the fellow looked it up and informed me they were not in stock or on order. I have discovered that things like the camera can be ordered online and picked up at the local store! A few years back I worked at a factory that used hot glue sticks by the thousand. Walmart was the best price we could find and they were happy to get us glue sticks by the case.

All I need now is to figure out how to get my cat's food stocked again. Elder cat Yoko likes Friskie's Special Diet in the Turkey flavor. Walmart had it for years but now I have to drive to get it elsewhere. Yoko is going on 13 years old and gets anything she wants. I bought a new pillow for my bed. The best most expensive one Walmart had. Yoko took one look and claimed it... guess I'll have to buy another for myself.

I was delighted when they put in a car service bay. Had my oil changed several times until they started getting weird. Seems for what ever reason it became a deal to put in Mobil synthetic oil for me. So I went back to changing my own oil... which I buy at Walmart!

Even so I shop there all the time because they are the only store in town open all night long. A nice time for me to shop because of my work hours. The night people know me now so buying a 24 pack of TP after midnight does not even get me a second glance. They get me to buy lots of junk I don't need just because it is cheap... for $10 even I'll try a George Foreman grill.

I'll have to look for the Maytag Blue next time. Maybe Sunday as I have that day off.

I found Maytag Blue at Sam's Club just before Christmas. My DH was trying to figure out why I was doing a happy dance! It was the best blue I have ever eaten! I think I need to find more.

Who knew! Going tomorrow to see if our WM has it!

When Chase and "himself" came to visit, on their Route 66 tour, they brought a wedge of 6 year old cheddar from Canada. OMG! It was so good. I found some at Sam's last week...guess what I had for supper! LOL

We got a new WalMart Supercenter here a year or so ago and it's really nice. It carries tons of stuff,about the same as the one across the river in Michigan and the prices aren't that much different either, some is cheaper here, some is cheaper there surprisingly.
Well we do get ripped off on milk and cheese though so I buy that in Michigan LOL
