Surprise at Walmart today!

While I was there for other items (TP, flour etc) I decided to check the price on my allergy meds. I haven't bought them there before, but figured maybe I could save a buck or two. I take two kinds, Chlortrimeton & Benadryl- basic over the counter stuff. CVS often has the Chroltrimeton in 100 ct bottles for about $11-12 dollars. Benadryl is a sneaky product. The main ingredient in Benadryl (Diphenhydramine HCl 25 mg) is the same as the main ingredient in some mild sleeping pills. The bottle of 100 ct sleeping pills is $14. Knowing all this I figured I would look for store brand Benadryl or sleeping pills. Well, let me tell you I was shocked! I know that SOME prices at Walmart are better. I also know that they don't stock some generic products or have been known to have only small containers of brand name product and big containers of more expensive store brand. It really is quite the manipulation. However, I found both meds in 100 ct bottles for. Are you ready??? $4 each! I feel so ripped off from CVS & Walgreen. For years I have been buying these products- the prices keep going up and up. And there they are for a quarter to the cost! Is this a problem with the healthcare industry? Or greedy mark up by the retailers? Or is Walmart just bating me to be there more often and will buy other more expensive items out of convenience?

My DH buys most RX from Walmart. After Obamacare took effect - most RX stayed the same while one went down to $1. ~

Walgreens, CVS and Rite-Aid are rip offs! Target and Wal-mart are way cheaper.

So that's why the cashier was upset with the older gentlemen just inside the door entrance the other day. I thought he was a greeter when I came in. As I waited for the cashier to ring up my purchases, the alarm went off that someone's bag needed checking. No one did anything. The customer just stood there with an amazed look on her face, "I paid for this, I really did, see? here's the receipt!" The cashier called over for her to just go on, ignore the alarm. It kept sounding. The cashier turned to me and growled, "Look at Joe (greeter) standing over there. He's the highest paid employee in the store and doesn't have to do a thing! He does NOTHING!". Joe must have been doing what he was told, but she was visibly upset. So no one checks returns anymore either? Is it true the greeters get such a good wage??

It may be quite a bit of difference when watering plants indoors or outside; overhead watering is just fine if water can dry up easily. But it may take longer indoors, especially if air circulation is poor. If plant is potted in water retaining soil, that could make it even worse - wet feet and wet crown. So best suggestion may be not to keep water sitting in the rosettes of succulent plants. When outdoors, all my succulents get rained on and if I need to water, I use garden hose - so it is overhead watering. Indoors, watering can is used. Most growers use peat to grow plants. It is inexpensive and very light - much better for shipping. They are also set up to keep peat moist just right, temperatures, light and air circulation much more even than hobbyist usually can. They often fertilize plants more than needed in order to get fast growth. They do not keep plants for long term, but ship them out to be sold.

I've rescued many markdown AVs, and have one growing now that I had to completely re-root because the roots were not salvageable. First, buy some African violet soil and get them out of those pots. They may already have root rot. Wash off as much of the old soil as you can, cut back the dead roots, take off some bottom leaves and brush some root hormone onto the bare part of the stem, then plant them in the new soil with that bare stem buried. Water well, but don't leave sitting in water, and don't get cold water on the leaves. I don't use special AV fertilizer, just 15-30-15 liquid at 1/4 strength (1/4 tsp. per gallon) each time I water, which is only when the soil is dry down to my second knuckle on my index finger. Put them somewhere that they get bright light, but no direct sun. An east window is great, but a north window will work while they're recovering. You might want to create a small "greenhouse" around them for awhile by sticking sticks up in the pot and draping a clear plastic bag over it. That helps retain humidity, which they need to recover. I always use Walmart for otc items. It's true of the vitamins and eye products too. It's good that you learned this and think of how much you'll save in the future.

I use a mail order RX through my insurance company for long term drugs, if I just need something the dr want s me to get for a month or so I use the RX at the clinic which is connected to CVS. OTC things would come from Target~

or if you have the space, we get larger bottles of vit's at Costco...they're supposed to be good on scripts, too...but the pharmacy is closed on sundays...

but I get my regular script meds at target..price isn't bad but the care I get, and on first name basis with my pharmacy staff, is wonderful...

we never go to the chain drugstores...

Benadryl I buy at big lots and dollar store or dollar general very cheap. Lots of other over the counter meds there too. Same as the store brands at some of the other stores.

Benadryl at Costco is even less than $4 per hundred. Last time it was about $6 for 600. I think even Amazon sells the same Kirkland brand, but not QUITE as cheaply as Costco. Since I'm an Amazon Prime member, I pay no shipping.

Costco? I am a BJ member but they only seem to have brand name & blister packaging. I'll have to look harder next time I am there.

600 pills??? God help me if my allergies are that bad! HA!

The only things I'll even consider buying at CVS, etc. are prescription meds. OTC? Never! Much less at Sam's, Costco or Wal Mart. I don't buy things like that in normal grocery stores either, because they always cost more.

Be aware that those "cheap" OTC things might not be what you think they are. Look to see where they are made. Lots of knock offs- read counterfeit- at the cheap stores and on line. Be careful, really, really careful!
