Do you have a food license?

I thought I'd put this out there for those selling food items in the craft fairs. You may want to check to see whether you would need a license to sell food that you make or package in your home. I remember someone on one of these forums (maybe the KT) got in trouble a few years ago for not having the proper license. I'm not sure if they got fined, but they weren't allowed to sell any more stuff. A fellow crafter at a show was mad at them and turned them in.

I called our local health department a while back. THe person I talked to said I could sell the dressed up jiffy pop popcorns. Anything I took out of a package would require a permit. The bags of candy with toppers, etc., would require a permit. Here in NM, I think that requires having a kitchen facility seperate from your house. It's possible and highly likely that you won't get caught. THe person I talked to didn't seem overly concerned. Who wants to take that chance.

I would call your local health department. I have had food handlers permits in three states.. And one of the things that you have to find out is WHERE your allowed to make the food.. Some states only allow food for sale to be made at a commercial kitchen....

Here in VA you have to have a separate kitchen too.

Sorry guys. I was spending a fair amount of time on my laptop on Saturday and was catching up on some discussions on this side. I'm a regular/frequent contributor on the Kitchen Table and the Cooking forums. I was browsing here and this discussion piqued my interest. I mentioned my post about the Nissan Cube with the Rubiks personalized plate. I smile when I see it. Also, there are quite a few personalized plates here (Ontario) but they're also a $200 ticket item. I'd never pay that.

I disagree with most of the above, but I do agree that deep-fried fish needs tartar sauce, but I always make my own, and I never use sweet pickles in it - only dill, if I put pickles in it at all. I've learned to make variations of tartar sauce, based on what I had in Brazil, and none of them are sweet. I don't have to have toast with egg - I often have tortillas or tostado, but I won't eat egg by itself. Half the time I do have toast, and the other half I have some form of tortilla. I do not put ketchup on anything - in fact I do not have ketchup in the house at all, except perhaps in some small packets from take-out that I never used. I only eat lamb when I go to a Middle Eastern restaurant, and even then I generally order something else, such as falafel. My favorite condiment is hot sauce, and I use that a lot and make my own.

I looked into the grocery delivery out of curiosity and maybe to try once just for fun. I guess I'm cheap cos I couldn't justify it. haha They add on an extra percentage to the groceries themselves plus the delivery. The main grocery store where I live has curbside and delivery. For delivery they charge extra for delivery and for a person to shop for them. I understand people need to get paid but I also understand this type of service is either an extreme luxury or extreme necessity depending on the situation. I'm able so I will do it myself. :) I don't mind and I like to see what I'm buying when it comes to groceries. In the 13 years we've lived at our house I'd say we've had food delivered less the 5 times. We'd rather go somewhere or eat at home.

How about "coffee will stunt your growth"? My parents did not say it but others did. My siblings and I drank coffee at times when we were young and were some of the tallest children and adults in the area. And the green, unripe apples that were supposed to result in stomach aches never affected us either. Annie, I heard the don't swim for an hour after eating, too. When I took American Red Cross Lifeguard training in my teens we were told that was not true, but that a person might have some difficulties swimming or doing any active sports if they overate. I wonder if picnics at the beach lead to overeating or food poisoning in the past that give a bit of truth to the advice. When we went on camping vacations as kids our parents usually had us wait after lunch a bit before going to the beach. I think it was mostly to keep us out of the most intense sun of the day and prevent sunburn - especially for my red-haired brother!

As a matter of fact I worked in the City Licensing Department and you are right. Any food that is unpackaged and repackaged you have to have a Food Purveyors Permit. What they request are commercial kitchens. But if you do it out of your own home, they can license for that also. I personally have one of those licenses and in all honesty, they are very simple to obtain. I have a Cake Decorating Business, a Catering Business and also my retail Arts and Crafts Business where I also use edible items. I had to get a license for each one separately. But, like I said it isn't hard to do.
So, what part of NM are you from? How are you liking the NM weather we are having all of a sudden??? BRRRRRR

Hi qtiemom. Nice to meet you.

I love Santa Fe. The food and shopping is awesome. I was there in August for the Indian Market. I wish I lived in that part of the state sometimes. I live down in the southern part. We don't get the snow, but someone needs to do something about the wind. I thought our windows were going to blow in the other night.

I'm glad there is someone here who knows the New Mexico food rules. I looked my info up online and then called the health department.

I agree with the health dept --- your product was already inspected ...it should be A-Ok. Just adding a bow or some doo-dads - can't change the original guarantee of health.
I hope someone that has to have the inspection will reply - I'm interested in the answer !
