Do you have food allergies?
Comments (27)I had food allergy testing done because I started having sores in my mouth. Tests came back that I am allergic to a number of things - 3+ on most - shellfish, oats, almonds, strawberries, oranges, nutmeg, cauilflower, mushrooms and of all things - celery! The allergy doctor says most allergies cause stomach problems headaches etc, not rashes or sores unless it is a nut allergy. Anyway - I know that I had been eating lots of oatmeal when the weather was cold and was in hopes that it would lower my cholestrol. Ha - turns out the stomach issues I was having was probably due to the oats! I avoid most of the things now - will eat a little crab once in a while and if the celery is in something else I eat it. I do avoid the almonds and the oats which seemed to be the worst. I think I am also allergic to something that is found in the seasoning I use on my Standing rib Roast. It is called Everglade Seasoning and makes the best roast. Anyway, I had a severe reaction - swelling eyes twice after eating meat I had cooked with it. First time I ended up in the hospital for three days - made the mistake of saying that it started with a shortness of breath. Several tests later I learned that I have a slight narrowing in a small place in one artery but no biggie. They were not worried about the eye swelling - but it took a week to go away even with heavy doses of Benadryl, Claratin and Prednisone. Happened a second time to a much lesser degree - I got out the Benadryl and allergy pills immediately and got it under control. I still carry my Epipen and Bendaryl with me wherever I go, though. Turns out the mouth sores are probably from a Galvanic Reaction to the amount of metal I have in my mouth from fillings and crowns. Took several months to run its coarse but will crop up from time to time. Keeping myself hydrated helps as does a good Vitamin B. Some thought it was called Geographical Mouth, which the same things are suggested for it. One interesting fact is that the mouth issue, eye swelling issue and the heart issue all occured about the same time. Bloodwork during this time also showed my potassium level was low. Since then I take a Potassium tablet every day....See MoreDo you have trouble keeping the crispy crust on fried food?
Comments (6)I just tried this with pan seared cod. Did not work. I don't have the problem with fried chicken (just burn the skin before the inside is done, that is another thread) but just can't get the breading to stay on fried catfish or cod. Looks great when I plate it, but cut into it and the breading just slides off the whole piece of fish....See MoreWeek 163 - What non American Thanksgiving food do you have?
Comments (51)Eam, beachem, cpartist, and all who gave recipes for purée ing turkey, thank you! I didn't see them till now, but I know the caregiver made purée with the leftovers. Mom's sister popped in on the way to her son's, just as we eer sitting down, so she helped Mom while DH and I oversaw things (and ate!). The carrots, Cook's Magazines boiled carrot recipe (I know, I know, who needs a recipe for boiled carrots? I do.) came out soft enough that she could manage them just fine, yet just firm enough for everyone else. I passed on the sweet potatoes, it was one too many things. I used Mom's wedding china, her gorgeous silver, and the damask napkins. She didn't recognize any of it, but it color-matched the family room where we ate better than their dining room :) Dad was in tears at the table, it was his first time home since August. The house is his baby, he designed it with an architect, his own company built it, on family land. Probably our last Thanksgiving in that house. Time for new traditions....See MoreI'm bored, so do you have any superstitions regarding food?
Comments (40)How about "coffee will stunt your growth"? My parents did not say it but others did. My siblings and I drank coffee at times when we were young and were some of the tallest children and adults in the area. And the green, unripe apples that were supposed to result in stomach aches never affected us either. Annie, I heard the don't swim for an hour after eating, too. When I took American Red Cross Lifeguard training in my teens we were told that was not true, but that a person might have some difficulties swimming or doing any active sports if they overate. I wonder if picnics at the beach lead to overeating or food poisoning in the past that give a bit of truth to the advice. When we went on camping vacations as kids our parents usually had us wait after lunch a bit before going to the beach. I think it was mostly to keep us out of the most intense sun of the day and prevent sunburn - especially for my red-haired brother!...See More- 5 years ago
