Anyone else get Cash for Gold?

A friend was telling me how much she got for a few little earrings, and a little bracelet. So, I thought I'd try to unload a bracelet I had. Not sure where it came from, but it was 18k. Pretty heavy, herringbone. And well, kind of ugly, lol. I'd never wear it. May have come from MIL (I cleared it with dh first)

Anyways, took it to the jewelry store that advertises on t.v. here, and walked out with a check for $326 ! I know I've got some "x-boyfriend jewelry" laying around here somewhere :)Going to do some more digging this wk!

I'm pretty excited. My painter is charging $320 to paint my cabinet doors. Figure it'll go towards that..guilt free :)

A friend of my DD just had a "Cash for Gold " party. Like a tupperware or pampered chef party, but you leave with a check.
My DD may book one, I'll have to go through my broken chains and single earrings.

I posted a similar question about this in Nov/Dec in 2009. I got alot of good hints from the members here so you don't get cheated. I used the money I got to buy Christmas presents, so it came in handy for me.

We are not alone!!! I got it too and at both my email addresses. I had changed my email to my netscape one because I like the netscape email better than hotmail. So that means the addresses have been harvested for some time!! I am not really put off by this either. It is not often you get mail regarding an interest. Some of its looks interesting to me but my cash resources will not be spent on botanical literature since most of what I need I just print off the net since it is for my own reference. I much rather buy plants instead. Too bad they were not offerring unique Chinese ferns etc. for sale and distributed like the way Wistuba carns are distributed in the USA!! Now that might be interesting!!

I have an old cash drawer from an old cash register. Not just the dividers, but the whole box with a drawer that rolls in and out. it is 6 inches tall about 2 feet by 2 feet square. Most time I have a little bunge strap holding it closed (especially when we are busy). When we don't have customers it is shut. I feel safer with this. With it being that big, it also holds our scales. I have thought about putting a bolt in the bottom of it and then putting a hole through the table, but I haven't thought I needed it. That way the shut drawer is bolted to the table. Also, our market is on the Courthouse square. There are usually 3 or 4 law enforcement vehicles parked near by at all times. The county jail is also there. Not to mention several of our law enforcement officers frequent the market during the day. Jay

I decided I would call them, he said they have been hacked into. They have corrected it, and will send emails to eveyone who recd and email. He thought it went to the people who have ordered from them. I told him I have never emailed him, called him or anything, other than looked them up one time on the internet, and I got an email. He thanked me for calling and giving him this additional information. I told him not to worry everyone who got the email knows he was highjacked and knew it was not really them. IMO it makes sense that you'd have green in there, because northern exposures tend to bring out blues (I'm meaning in colors here, not in people, although that applies too! I know because the entire back of our house, the area in which we live most, is north facing and I get greens in colors you'd never expect to see green in, when I put them up on the wall). The orangey tones in your oak cabs might bring out the complement, too, which would be blue (the same way the paint is bringing out the rusty/golds in the laminate). And painting over Olive Branch without a primer might very well also be contributing, as you note. If you really don't want any green in there, you might want to look for paints that read more orange in the store than you like. But so you really don't want green in there? It's obviously a natural partner of the colors you've got going...

Yes, cleaned out jewelry box in 2007 and 2009. Got a much nicer return in 09.

You can figure out what you should get from your jewelry if you know they karat value and weight. There are many articles on line that outline how the equation goes. 24 kt. is pure gold, 18 k. is 75% (notice on the back of a piece where there is a stamp with the ()K. If there isn't a stamp, don't be alarmed I had a lot of 18 pieces that weren't stamped. Separate your gold into different types, 18, 14 10 k., do your homework online to see what gold is going for. If you can weigh it, do so. If you know what you are doing, you will be more confident in doing business with your jeweler. At the suggestion of MIL, I went to her jeweler first, he wanted to give 1/2 of what I was due for 1 pc. of 18kt jewelry. I thanked him for his time (I knew he was ripping me off) and went where I should have gone in the first place, my own jeweler.

I've not been to a home party, but I think I would stick to my regular jeweler. The home based parties remind me of the mail your gold for cash type deal. Unless the hostess is very well versed in what gold is selling for at the day of the party, separates and weighs everything properly, you may get less than your jewelry is actually worth. Also, if you sell something that stones need to be removed from, do they do that at the party? How does that work. I went back to my jeweler a few days later to retrieve the stones she couldn't get out easily when I sold.

I think I would also stay away from places that advertise. Just me, but I go to my local jeweler, where I go to buy jewelry as well. I know she isn't ripping me off.

There have been quite a few news magazine-type shows featuring the mail away businesses. They were not at all consistent in what they were paying. Offered little, then the customer complained, they would offer a little more. I dont want to do all that. I want to go to a reputable person, sell my jewelry and walk away with cash.

My friend & I sold our jewelry. She had gone to an old friend who owns a jewelry store to get a price first. Then we hooked up with a "gold guy", and he was paying more. She walked away with over $800, and I got over $600.
And he even came to my house. Now if you want to host a party, he asks what percent the hostess wants to keep for herself. In my case, I wanted my friends to get all they could and I kept nothing from their take.

What about gold with diamonds in it? thinking of having diamonds removed and rings made for dh and I,bands to match, but the price of a new band will prob. be higher then what we get??? also heard they use catagories, like 10k, 14k and so on, is this true?

susieq - your jeweler should be able to pop out any stones. As far as the catagories, separate your jewelry into karat type - 18k, 14k, 10k.

Whether or not your new bands will be more $$ (I am thinking probably will be) depends on the value of what you are selling, weight of gold x karat worth.
