GE Cafe Gas Range- Optional 5" SS Backguard Yes or No?

I already ordered the GE Cafe Gas Range, along with the backguard. Nothing is going to be delivered or installed until I give my approval of the GE circulating fan hood that is being delivered to the store. I was told I could change my order anytime up until the hood arrives.

Since I will not be doing a tile backsplash for maybe another year, I will only have painted drywall (I can always paint under the cabinets with a more glossy paint if this would help) behind the range. The gas range has the two simmer burners in the back and the two power burners in the front so maybe this will not matter?

So since I do not know what backsplash I am picking out and do not know if next year will be the year to remove the 20 year old almond laminate counters that have a 4" backguard going up along the wall under the kitchen cabinets, my friend had suggested to get the backguard so there will not be nothing behind the range. Now he is telling me I should wait and keep it off until I finish the renovation of my kitchen especially since I am not sure I may like the GE hood and then may go with the Broan range hood that was not a perfect match.

I have seen pictures with and without the 5" backguard and I find both pretty.

Those with the backguard, do you like it and are glad you bought it or wish you did not buy it? Those without the backguard, do you wish you bought it?

Those who do not have the GE Range but want to give input, that would be appreciative.

I could always tell the store to take the 5" backguard off the order and install the range and hood and let me think about it and see how it looks without it with that laminate going around the counters up 4" which may be there for another year until I have time and funds to do the rest of the kitchen.

By the way, I am getting the Gas Range for $1999 and maybe getting the backguard for $185 plus sales tax or taking it off the order since I am not sure what I am doing to the rest of the kitchen yet and I am still waiting for the hood to arrive at the store for my approval. I have a provided a link to see the range with and without the backguard that is in picture #4 on the GE Site. I wonder if the backguard is difficult to install if if I decide I need it later on?

My new dishwasher is a KitchenAid dishwasher and my refrigerator is an LG French Door refrigerator. All my appliances will end up being stainless steel but not a perfect match but each had features I liked a lot.

I am going to cross post this question to both the Kitchen Forum and the Appliance Forum. Thank you! I guess I want to love my home and each change I make causes me to feel proud of my place when visitors stop by.

Personally, I wouldn't get the backguard - particularly since you don't know what you'll be doing with the backsplash - it's all a matter of personal preference.

I think the GE Cafe is an adorable range. I don't own one, but I have considered it. I think the backguard, however, is not as great looking as the rest of the stove. Maybe it was just the installation at the appliance store where I saw it, but it looked a little cheap to me and didn't add anything to the stove. I'd go without it and plan on a pretty backsplash on your wall down the road.

I purchased a GE Profile all (nat) gas #PBG910SE1SS a couple of months ago. This model is not the "Cafe" version but has a simular if not identical cooktop and burners. Also it has full SS top and backsplash/contol unit -- heavy cast full width grates --- rather attractive and "pro" looking. Cleans up easily. Have only used the center griddle once and its a nice feature. I bought the GE in in place of a Bluestar that I had been lusting after for some time, but reconsidered as my condo rules prohibited an outside vent. No sense buying 22,000 Btus when it would only be practical to operate it @ half flame! Anyway -- the GE has been terrific in very way. (it does have a 17,500 BTU power burner too and brings a large pasta pot to a boil in less than half the time my old Whirlpoop did -actually the WP could barely boil it at all). I still have to do my wok cooking (and crab steaming) outdoors on my "cajun" LP gas burner (34,000 BTU) because of the smoke issue. The GE oven holds 500F easily for my pizzas and according to my My Infrared thermo-gun indicates oven stays within 20degrees at all settings--- very stable. Also the simmer burner is awesome w/nice stable flame you barely can see so be careful that it gets turned off! Large burners also simmer well too. It may not be a BS but I sure am happy with the GE. It has been flawless and performance beyond my expectations --- I thought I was making a big compromise. Price was not hard to take either, bought a new Profile DW along with the range for a lot less than the BS alone.

I went with the Profile double-oven gas: here are my reasons. I like the smaller-size top oven for daily use, and the lower oven will only be used on occasion, so I'm ok with its location. (There's no room for a wall oven in my tiny kitchen -- and I have no plans to tear out cabinets and rearrange.) I'm a good cook, and I honed my skills on low-end domestic ranges because that's what was available: I don't need a commercial range to cook what I like, and I'm too busy with other aspects of my life to change my cooking style now. I also prefer not to deal with "pro" level BTUS and the ventilation complications they might add. I also am not willing to give up self-cleaning ovens -- which puts many pro-style ranges out of contention. I liked the slide-in setup and the angled control-knob location on the Profile, so that, and the price advantage, led me to choose it over the Cafe. Re: price, I bought mine from a local dealer, and I got the price down a bit by asking them to meet the ajmadison.com price. They didn't quite get there, but I was willing to pay a little extra for local sales/delivery/service reliability. Everyone's situation is a little different, but I found that the Profile slide-in fits best with my kitchen and the way I use it.

I've had my GE Cafe Dual Fuel (converted to LP gas) since last Thursday. This replaces a Bertazzoni 30" all gas that was defective. The GE arrived with a small dent in the oven door - the appliance store states they will order a new one and replace for us. No problem. As for the range so far, I LOVE it! I had a very bad experience with the Bertazzoni and comparing that to the new GE it is NO comparison. I'm so pleased with the GE. The range top seems huge compared to the Berta, I believe this is simply the design but it's nice that it feels so spacious. The burners light quickly and the control is super. I can cook an egg on both front burners on very low and also boil water quickly on the right front "power burner". I have not yet used the middle (5th) burner but I will soon test this one. The oven is completely quiet, roasted fresh tomatoes/garlic/onions for a tomato sauce for 1 hr 30min Friday night and the oven fan never came on. The Berta oven roared upon lighting and never quieted down the entire time - I hated it! The electronic touch pad is fabulous - you barely touch and the command is done. One issue to mention, the knobs did get quite warm during the oven operation. Not burning hot but hot. This is something I will watch. Overall, I am very pleased with this range.

From the KP manual The Turbo Boil burner (18k BTU) is the most powerful burner for cooking in larger pots, for canning, for large amounts of soup, or for boiling water, and it is located at the right front of the cooktop. • The Simmer burner (5k BTU) is best suited for simmering delicate sauces, and so on, and it is located at the right back of the cooktop. • The Power burner (12k BTU) is recommended for bringing large quantities of liquid to temperature and when preparing larger quantities of food, and it is located at the left front of the cooktop. • One standard burner (7.5k BTU) may be used for most surface cooking needs, being designed to fit most cookware. It is located at the left back of the cooktop. • The Simmer Oval burner is located in the center of the cooktop and consists of a center burner (the 5k BTU Oval Simmer burner) and an oval burner, consisting of two, 12k burners. The center, Oval Simmer, burner can be set separately from the overall Simmer Oval burner. This is badly written bc it makes you think the center consists of 5+12+12 but does this actually mean the center is 5+12 = 17? If so, total of 59. If not, and center is 12, then 54. I am looking at all gas too.

weissman & francoise47, I appreciate both of your opinions with I value. I have not seen the backguard in person. I will wait to get more opinions and then make my decision but I am not sure what I will be doing with the backsplash yet so maybe I should wait.

If I don't do a backsplash until next spring, would it be OK to only have the stove against the drywall in my kitchen that is painted with no backguard or tile backsplash if I paint behind the stove in a semi-gloss?
