GE Cafe range opinions

Does anyone have a GE Cafe oven range, either gas or duel fuel? I have settled on a 30 inch oven instead of a 36 (after bringing my oven pans to the store, it was evident that we can't really cook more in a 36 inch oven), and like the 5 burners, convection oven, and smaller second oven options on the Cafe. But, the real question is how does it work and does it have significant problems? I'd love to hear from some owners, or opinions on other ranges with the items that I want. Thanks.

Normally there is more discussion here in this forum, but in the past couple of weeks there have been threads on the GE Cafe appliances in the Kitchens forum, so you may want to search there.

I've had my GE Cafe Dual Fuel (converted to LP gas) since last Thursday. This replaces a Bertazzoni 30" all gas that was defective.

The GE arrived with a small dent in the oven door - the appliance store states they will order a new one and replace for us. No problem.

As for the range so far, I LOVE it! I had a very bad experience with the Bertazzoni and comparing that to the new GE it is NO comparison. I'm so pleased with the GE.

The range top seems huge compared to the Berta, I believe this is simply the design but it's nice that it feels so spacious.

The burners light quickly and the control is super. I can cook an egg on both front burners on very low and also boil water quickly on the right front "power burner". I have not yet used the middle (5th) burner but I will soon test this one.

The oven is completely quiet, roasted fresh tomatoes/garlic/onions for a tomato sauce for 1 hr 30min Friday night and the oven fan never came on. The Berta oven roared upon lighting and never quieted down the entire time - I hated it!

The electronic touch pad is fabulous - you barely touch and the command is done.

One issue to mention, the knobs did get quite warm during the oven operation. Not burning hot but hot. This is something I will watch.

Overall, I am very pleased with this range.

I am not sure how useful this will be. I replaced an electric smoothtop (I hate them!) in my house in Oregon with an Electrolux Wavetouch 5 burner dual fuel LP range. I only lived there full time for about a year with the range before relocating to Maine. Am not sure what the fascination with smooth tops, but I ended up with another one in the place I have purchased in Maine, its dual burner died after 4 months of use. I decided to replace it with the 30" all LP Berta range and am taking advantage of the hood promotion (BTW, they retail for $1,200). My place is heated with an LP based European type hydronic radiant heat units and a LP fireplace, so adding cooking should not tax my 300 gallon LP tank, LOL! I was looking for a range that is decidedly "manual" without an electronic interface due to the wind and subsequent power outages that are to common in this part of the state. I was also advised of service problems with the electronic interfaces on the Electroluxes, even though my range in Oregon has not had a service problem as of yet, knock on wood (am a reluctant landlord). Initially, I planned to purchase an Electrolux dual fuel floor model but could not pass up the hood promotion Bertazzoni is currently offering. I am only hoping when the range is installed, the oven temp will be adequately calibrated. I previously owned a Viking, but really did not want to spend the extra money for what I thought would be of marginal benefit. I also do not miss cleaning the Viking grates which were an exercise in weightlifting too! I visited friends of mine a few years ago in Europe and I believe they have a Berta (the knobs are pretty distinctive). I do about 70% rangetop and 30% oven cooking. My old Viking had gas convection and an infrared broiler and I really liked the oven and understand that the Berta is similar, though I believe the heat control is different (regulated by flame instead of on and off).

I wouldn't spend the extra $$ for an electric Cafe when I could get virtually the same performance for at a minimum a thousand dollars less by choosing a regular GE with a convection oven. Electric ranges are all pretty similar in functionality, add or subtract convection, at whatever price point. If your mom really didn't need convection, then a $600 Frigidaire or Hotpoint will do the same job that the higher priced ones will and save you $2200. Electric isn't like gas where the extra money buys you increased performance. There's only so much "peformance" to be gotten out of a regular electric range and spending more money only gets you different styling.

The mother-in-law installed GE Cafe as part of her kitchen remodel 3 years ago. Gas range, OTR microwave, and 'fridge. The 'fridge died after 20 months and GE was kind enough to replace it for $700. Last month the $650 control board on the microwave went (GE isn't willing to do anything about that). So far the range has been trouble free. Personally, I wouldn't buy a GE appliance again.

From this pic it looks good. Can you take a few more from farther away? FYI, I have a 10 year old Cafe range and love it. The design is a bit different bc mine has a full sized main oven (a 28 pound turkey fit easily!) and the lower oven looks like a warming drawer but is a real oven. The stovetop is used daily, the main oven multiple times a week. Lower oven a few times a month. It’s great!

prestonbeary, any pics of your range? I am glad you are pleased with the range. Did you buy the optional 5" backguard or did you keep it off? That is what I am still trying to decide as I wait for the hood to arrive that was a special order before the range is delivered.

I think it is an ugly range. I was looking at these but wanted pro look, and this does not do it. I am ordering an NXR, less money and a better range. In the 3 very reputatable stores I went to, they all steered me from this range. And the "red" on the range is not attractive.

It is me again. What would be so helpful as I make my decision is from users of this range as to how it works. The look is less important, and is very subjective.

We considered the 5" backguard but I think we will forgo this because so far I do not feel that it's needed.

We were quoted $250 ish for it and that's quite a bit.

The Bertazzoni we replaced did have a taller backguard but the GE seems fine with the standard one.

No pics yet as we are not able to get the range slid back to the wall all the way as our gas line needs to be relocated and that will not happen for a few days. The current location of the gas line prohibits the range from fitting all the way back.

Also we are still waiting on the backsplash tiles - I will see how the range looks with these installed and then will make the final decision on the additional backguard.

This is the range I've ordered for our new house (all electric)... so no use yet. While shopping for ranges the Metro salesman with 25 yrs in appliance sales, was sent to Viking school in NJ for a week, yet he put this very range (gas) in his house and loves it. I thought it interesting instead of pushing the Viking, he convinced us the GE Cafe was the was to go. I'm curious to know about the piece in the back also. I didn't order it, but may decide to once I see what the range looks like without it.

prestonbeary, I found the backguard on sale for $181 and the store almost matched it at $185 if I want the 5" backguard which I find pretty but I am not sure how it will look in my kitchen with the 4" laminate sides of my counters that may be changed next year. Please post pictures when you can.

I prefer the NXR but chose the GE Cafe since I want the self-cleaning feature. If the NXR would have had the self-cleaning feature, I would have chosen it since I felt it was better made and I loved the look of it. Even though I really hate cleaning. I almost bought the NXR and committed myself to forcing myself to clean more and get better at it.

I happen to love the red knobs on the GE Cafe but then again I love red and have a red Tea Pot.

Tom_P_PA, I had prices of $1999 for both the NXR and the GE Gas Range but now I see the GE Cafe Gas range is more if I add the backguard to it that the NXR has.
