Cat poop in my tomato pots! HELP!
Comments (14)Glad to hear that you're planning to take in the kitten! This may be a moot point right now given that it's just a kitten, but you might want to be aware that outdoor cats that catch and eat mice or birds may be exposed to toxoplasmosis, which may then be passed along in their feces. Generally speaking, it's nothing to worry about for healthy adults, however, for a woman who might have plans to become pregnant, it is something to be aware of, as it can cause birth defects or worse. Even then, impeccable sanitary practices (wearing gloves, washing hands, don't put your hands to face, etc.) should help keep things safe. I'm just more aware of it because I love gardening and my husband and I would like to start our family within the year, but my neighbor's sweet cat insisted on using our tomato beds as its litter box. I end up scrunching up bird netting and floating row cover cloth and putting it on the ground, around my tomatoes. Also, there's a product called Shake-Away and one formulation is specifically to deter cats. It uses fox scents or something and makes the cats stay away because of fear of a natural predator, which I liked because I didn't want to harm the cat, just deter it, but it's quite expensive. Anyway, hopefully you will be able to take in the kitty and this will not be an issue going forward, but I'm including a link to info regarding toxoplasmosis from the CDC. Good luck! Comments (7)Sorry as I said I'm on a phone don't mean to double post. My main problems are: What kind of poisons are the best? What else can I do? Everyplace on the web is in a giant debate but poison is so frowned on, I just want to be able to sit and night and write and edit and do my side work lol. Why is nothing being caught? We placed traps in the general area where we see them, we lock up all food and clean now like its going out of style, so no other known food sources, unless it is in the apt next to ours, but then as I said, according to my landlord "no one else has seen them" (But is everyone up at one AM?) How much does a pro cost? And I heard they use poison anyway... It should also be noted it is a brutal Winter here and curious also that as spring and summer come will these vacate for the most part or stay? I know they can't really be gone till all the entrys are plugged and the ones inside are caught or killedb but was curious if it would "die down". Sorry guys, thanks again just want the things out out out!...See MorePlease help identify this poop!
Comments (3)Wow, thanks Jean. I am beginning to wonder if it could be weasel poop. I am just amazed by the different wildlife that we have recently been encountering here. We have lived here for 40 years and all the sudden it is like wildlife central. STarted with the appearance of tree frogs three years ago, then foxes two years ago, this past year we had flying squirrels invade our attic and now this strange poop. Woudl love to here anyone else's opinions!...See Moremice in silverware drawer - help me please...
Comments (18)Mary - I was afraid to do the yearly contract with Orkin b/c my opinion was that I will probably always have mice even if it's just one every couple of months because I don't know if it's possible to patch every crack/point of entry. Orkin was setting those small round black traps that have a hole that the mouse enters but can't get out. The guy told me that mice always have to be moving or else they will die of hypothermia?? So when the small trap closes they can't move inside it and die. But how is that going to deter other mice from coming into my home? If Orkin was going to attempt to find the point(s) of entry and give me suggestions on plugging it up then I would have gotten the contract. But I felt I would be on the contract forver if they were just going to set traps (the exact ones I bought at Home Depot myself). I thought they were going to 'exterminate' them somehow. I mean I can catch them myself when they appear to be around using the same traps. I am very hesitant to sign contracts that are difficult to get out of. I've been down that road with a gym membership, cellphone company and My Gym classes with my kids. You can't get out of them! So I was just afraid to do that. You mentioned that the poison in the traps makes mice thirsty and they run out looking for water. What would happen if a pet God forbid ate the dead mouse? I probably wouldn't do that b/c of my dog and kids playing in the yard. I think I would be mortified if my kids or their little playmates came across a dead mouse in the yard. But I also agree that trying to 'patch' every entryway/hole/crack in the house seems daunting and nearly impossible. I am still going to try to do so in the fall. Patches123 mentioned that mice were getting into their house through the plumbing under the sink. I'm almost positive that this is one point of entry in our house too. I'm going have my hubby patch that to start...then we'll work on the rest in the spring. Thank you all once again. It's helpful to hear how other people have managed this......See Moremaire_cate
