Can you get your roofer to put a test patch of each on your roof? We did that with 6 or 7 colors (since we hated the first 4), and ended up with something we are very happy with. I think Pewter is the one with a lot of blue in it? Or maybe not . . . We found the best way to tell was on our physical house. I am sure we paid a little extra for it but since it was an expensive decision and a 20 year plus decision we thought it was worth it. If you have it narrowed down to two, I would definitely do a test patch. We did Moire Black which is actually more of a charcoal gray - the description I read said reminicent of vermont slate and that is pretty accurate. It is quite a bit darker than the two you are considering, and also doesn't have a lot of color variation which we liked but some don't.

Well, they'll be putting the shingles up in a few weeks and the bricks will go on in the spring, so a test patch wouldn't do much in this situation. Moire black is what I'm leaning towards after taking shingle sampes to our brick mock walls this afternoon. I don't like how varied and almost patterned the pewter and georgetown gray are. I don't want the roof to get lots of attention as we have a cupola on top that will be the focus. I'm planning to add a link later tonight of the two brick colors we've narrowed it down to to see if I can get some votes on which one to pick. thanks!

I think it is pretty common to not have the siding nailed down when you choose the roof, so putting a sample up is probably still a good idea if you have a question. The Moire Black is a great, go with everything color. Very little variation, not a stark black (more of a dark charcoal though it does look black at times), and would go with everything just about. So many roof shingles now have all sorts of variation in color and I am not a fan of that look. Also, we were urged to consider a slate roof which we couldn't swing financially. We didn't want to highlight the fact we have an asphalt roof . . .

ohlaches, is that certainteed landmark pewter on your roof? it looks really good, actually. athensmom, i agree, we can't afford slate or even synthetic slate and don't want to highlight the asphalt roof either. ohlaches roof looks great and doesn't have the patterned look i feared with the pewter sample we have. here is the brick we're leaning toward--does anyone want to weigh in on whether it'd be best with pewter or moire black? our brick isn't going in until the spring and the shingles are going up in a few weeks, so doing a patch test on the roof isn't going to help us, unfortunately.

Yes, it is the Certainteed pewter gray....I agonized over the color for several weeks, because I was afraid it was too light, but I thought the moire was too black....ack! In the end I just said...go with it...and I really like the way it turned out. Our brick is Columbus Brick Company Burlington, and I love the combination. I was originally looking at a more orangey/salmony colored brick that is very popular in one of the suburbs, but I didn't like it with the cool tones of the pewter shingles....just something to think about. The patch test was helpful to us for color but also (primarily) to see what the variation in color looked like on a larger sample 2 stories high. It was extremely helpful with this, and we went with something with little variation for that reason :).

I think it may have been the Timberline pewter we looked at with a lot of blue in it . . . it is all running together now!

oh shoot....I just looked and these aren't Landmark, they are Timberline/GAF.....sorry! When you look at our pewter gray, there is blue in it....which is what scared me at first. Now that it's up, it doesn't look blue, but definitely cool.....that's why the warmer orangey bricks didn't look good.....See what building does....I've lost my mind! Good luck!

Haha! Yes, my mind is also starting to go! Well, crazy as it sounds, I sort of think the blue-ish goes with the orange. Isn't it silly that I want my choices to be approved of by gardenwebers? Guess I hold your opinions in high regard. I must say, I'm super disappointed your shingles aren't landmark because I really like them. I sure hope landmarks look as nice.

I think ohlaches hit the nail on the head about the warm orangey salmon bricks and the cool blue roof . . . that is why it looks disjointed to me I think. If you add in the cool gray mortar it magnifies the cool/warm dichotomy. The same reason I can't decide on a paint color for my brick - the undertone of the windows is warm and I really want a taupe - won't work :). I think if you like the orangey bricks, I would do a more neutral mortar for sure. . . The pewter roof may work then but I don't know. I think there needs to be continuity between brick and roof and going from cool mortar to warm brick to cool roof may not give you the effect you are looking for.

So the brick we are thinking of (Old Williamsburg, the lighter color) is on this McDonald's not too far from us and they also have a pewter colored shingles. What do you all think of it on this fast food place--I think it looks really great. But, my husband just pointed out that in our setting (heavily wooded), the green trees and grass might make the brick look more orange. Any thoughts?

lol.....the first brick I chose was on a Taco Bell! I think this looks very nice, by the way.

We are painting the brick, not whitewashing, we think. Still working on the color which is the limiting factor - can't get anything that goes well with the windows that I like. . . Sherwin Williams actually has the window formula so I am going today to see if they can mix it at 150 percent and 200 percent and see if either of those work. . . this has been the hardest (and the biggest!) decision of all!!!

Yes, I do like it....especially for the look you are going for....I think you should try to match the mortar shade though, because in that pic it all ties together nicely. I also agree that the reds tend to lend to a brownish look at times, it worked for us, but if it's not what you want....go with the Williamsburg. BTW.... I should also tell you that the first stone I picked is all over the zoo! So I had Taco Bell and the Zoo!!!! I"m glad I saw them up close, because they looked nothing tlike the picture!

Replacing brown roof, hoping for charcoal gray that will not clash with attached neighbour's existing roof. Trying to choose remotely via online tools for my east coast roof from west coast. Rolling the dice! This thread helped. Pewter gray too blue, Georgetown gray too light, Driftwood too brown. Moire Black it is!!

I love your house, Mimi C! We settled on Certainteed Landmark in Pewter. We were going to go with the Landmark Pro, but those only came in the high def, which is what we were trying to avoid. So we went a step down to the regular Landmark. Our roof was just finished yesterday, and we are very happy with our choice. We almost went with the Moire Black, which will look great, also. We're building a two-story brick with three dormers and black shutters and a porch. We wanted it to look like an 1830 farmhouse from Pennsylvania that I ran across on Pinterest or Houzz. It's coming together!

i am also considering certainteed Landmark in Pewter, it took me several days narrowing the samples down to that one, but after reading comments about colour variations and the fact that Landmark Pewter looks blue (which I do not want) I thought I would ask you since your roof is completed. Are you happy with the results, now that it has been done for a few months......please say it is not blue. Lol

Hello, Corinne! Our roof turned out great, and looks good with the red brick we used. I don't really notice a blue coming out, but if it did, it wouldn't bother me, since real slate had a hint of bluish tone to it - more of a grayish blue. But I just see our roof as a dark grey. I wish I knew how to post a photo. What style is your house, and what kind of siding/brick are you using? I know how hard it is to make up your mind on things like this, but the roof is one thing I never second guessed after choosing. Now the flashing, that was a different story! We're still not done - rainy summer slowed things down. So more decisions left to make!

I was just thinking that a grey roof would look great with the stones on the porch. The Landmark Pewter looks dark grey to me. I've not second guessed my decision on that. Our brick is dark red. I love your house! Is it old, or is it built new to look old? We built a new house to look old, since we couldn't find an old one to renovate. We're still not done, since we're doing the trim work and all other wood ourselves.

Sorry, I'm not very tech savvy, but it does look like the top photo in the sun, and in the shade, or an overcast drizzly day like now, a dark charcoal. Note that there are different grades - I'm remembering the top one as called pro. We got a level down from that, since the pro had more color variation, and we wanted less. To me, the pewter just looked the closest to a slate roof, which is what I'd want if I had unlimited funds. Good luck on your decision-making!

I'm trying to find a dark grey but need more brown in it than blue. I don’t like a real busy roof . My stucco is DOVER SKY and hardy board aged pewter any suggestions Need in the next couple of days!

"Colonial Slate" looks great with brick houses. Landmark shingles change colors with the light. Best way to see what you like to drive to houses that have those color shungles and see how they look as a whole on various styles and colors of houses within their particular settings. My color: Georgetown Grey. Just got my new roof yesterday!

I am looking at the Pewter or Pewter wood. Does it turn blue? I can't go as dark as the M. Black and was looking for the next up but don't like alot of color variations in it. Help!

Pewterwood does not have quite the color changes or patchwork look, this has been my struggle as well.
I’ve narrowed down to pewterwood which is a softer color dark roof not much variation or the complete other direction of the lightest gray under landmark premium thinking the variations in the light color won’t pop out as much.
My contractor has been super patient with me letting me see a bundle of the colors I’m interested in actually on my roof. Of course I am spending money on each bundle and throwing it away once we decide. It has helped 100%. Better than looking at a roof I can’t stand!

I’m not sure what part of the country you’re in I’m in Massachusetts and they didn’t even offer a pewter here but they did offer pewterwood which is like a dark gray. Moire Black is black with a little shading.
I also had the hardest time in the world it actually caused me so much stress that I think I just gave in to Certainteed charcoal. I did want a contrast between a light colored body house and a dark roof so we did charcoal and Cape cod gray Maibec shingles and I am happy with it. However after I did mine I had seen Georgetown gray on some roofs which is lighter than pewterwood it’s on the gray side with a little bit of green or blue in the background of it. The color variants are very subtle and nice they don’t stand out it is a gray roof if you like something lighter.
Keep in mind when selecting certainteed that certain teed pro and premium the colors are basically the same but regular Certainteed shingles the colors are different from the upgraded shingles even if the name is the same. It’s a little tricky.

I’m in Canada and Pewterwood isn’t offered here - just Pewter. I’m leaning toward a gray roof. Moire Black looks too black.
