choosing a roof color / certainteed landmark

Hello - we are replacing our roof and need to choose color. We're going with CertainTeed Landmark and right now thinking about Slate Blend, Colonial Slate, or Driftwood.

Have also considered at great length Weathered Wood but although we like it finally thought it might be too brown/neutral for our house. Thought about Pewterwood as well but are wondering if it is too dark/heavy.

Any advice/thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

Personally I'd go with Slate Blend. It's a good idea to stay away from browns. When my mother was replacing her roof a few years ago to prepare to sell, her real estate agent was adamant that she stay away from tan or brown, since homes with brown roofs are apparently harder to sell. I think it looks dated. I'm not sure if it's different where you live, this was in North Carolina.

It's hard to tell from the small images, but I'd go with Pewterwood or the Slate Blend.

I’m not sure what part of the country you’re in I’m in Massachusetts and they didn’t even offer a pewter here but they did offer pewterwood which is like a dark gray. Moire Black is black with a little shading. I also had the hardest time in the world it actually caused me so much stress that I think I just gave in to Certainteed charcoal. I did want a contrast between a light colored body house and a dark roof so we did charcoal and Cape cod gray Maibec shingles and I am happy with it. However after I did mine I had seen Georgetown gray on some roofs which is lighter than pewterwood it’s on the gray side with a little bit of green or blue in the background of it. The color variants are very subtle and nice they don’t stand out it is a gray roof if you like something lighter. Keep in mind when selecting certainteed that certain teed pro and premium the colors are basically the same but regular Certainteed shingles the colors are different from the upgraded shingles even if the name is the same. It’s a little tricky.

I have used both. They are pretty much identical - but I prefer GAF. Why? The price is a little cheaper, but the shingle is very hardy. I use a GAF system - GAF Shingle, GAF Deck Armor, GAF Ice and Water Shield, and GAF Cobra Ridgevents. If you call or check the GAF website you can find a GAF Certified Contractor in your area. By using him, you will get an ironclad guarantee for your roof up to 55 years. I don't know of a comparable program with Certainteed.

FWIW - we debated this very issue and asked our lumber yard guy, he said in his opinion, it wasn't worth it. He said that his customers have been very happy with the certainteed product without having to upgrade to the PRO. We have the basic on our house (8 years old) and they have held up great. We just put the basic on our new build as well.

A photo would help, but I wouldn't go any darker than the Pewter based on sml's photo. It would work with white siding and the other colors you mentioned. Depending on the house design, extremely dark roofs can be pretty severe and also create a lot of focus.

I also like Slate Blend - I was wondering if it might be better for our house than Colonial Slate? - more red sprinkled throughout which might tie better to both the brick and the green shutters.

Another issue...we are in Washington DC area and Slate Bend is not officially offered here - its a CertainTeed Northeast color, as is Pewterwood. So we would have to pay more to have it shipped down here. We're apparently considered southeast region - Colonial Slate and Pewter are CertainTeed Southeast colors.

We just had the Slate Blend put on... it is gorgeous! That bit of red really makes a difference.

We have red brick with Colonial Slate, and you really cannot go wrong with that as it is a classic look. However, the Slate Blend looks fabulous. I also seriously considered Driftwood, but it was a little too brown.

I also like Georgetown Gray and Grantham(?) Gray...Any of the medium grays, similar to what you have now, will be pretty.

Yes, Driftwood is a grayish/brown. We have it on our home. Here is an old photo taken at dusk, so it will be hard to see the true color, but it may go well with your brick, but I am thinking that the Slate Gray is a better fit..

Newhomebuilder, your home is very beautiful, thanks for posting the pic.

I've loved Driftwood when I've seen it in pictures on other houses. In fact it always looks gray to me rather than brown in contrast to brick. But when I tried it on our house using CertainTeed Colorview it looked a little too brown.

Re: slate blend vs. colonial slate...soliciting a bit more advice...it seems that slate blend might be at least a little bit better for our house. Just wondering how much better and would it be worth the extra trouble and $$s to get the slate blend to Virginia.

The Driftwood in my above photo looks more gray, and I guess it is, but does have brown flecks in it. On sunny days and when the roof is wet, the brown really shows more. Cloudy days or at dusk, it is more brown. Since we used both colors out of our brick for trim and paint, it all blends together.

I took a look at the samples. Really hard to tell from the photos, but the Colonial Slate does seems to be a bit light versus the Slate Blend. Only you can decide if it is worth the extra $$. What about Georgetown Gray?

I didn't see the picture you posted when I posted my first response. I think you should definitely go dark, it will tie in your black shutters and make the red brick pop. That's too bad Slate Blend isn't offered in VA. While the flecks of red would go nicely with your red brick and door, how do you feel about Pewterwood or Georgetown Gray? Georgetown looks like it still has a warm hue.

Hello, We live in Bethesda and our house is identical to yours. We are thinking of using the certainteed slate roofing as well. We would love to drive by and see how yours looks if that would be alright with you?

I know this is a very old thread and you're not likely to see this but we are having the same debate with our colonial in Westover. I'm dying to know which color you went with! If you see this, will you please let me know? Thanks so much!
