I'd be turned off by anything preachy. Whether I like the premise or agree with the politics, I won't watch it. If you are thinking about "convincing" anyone, it could well backfire.

Best to let your husband come around on his own. You can provide the best food choices for your family at home.

I find it minorly annoying to have someone try to "educate" me.

It's available to view through Netflix, so I'll be watching it as soon as I have a block of time. If it's appropriate, I'll probably then have my kids watch it.

I watched it on Netflix the other night... well halfway anyway. Then my short attention span was zapped and I couldn't finish it. Didn't help that I was eating a non-organic cheeseburger at the time.

I will probably finish it sometime soon. I wanted to see it even before it came on Oprah (can't believe she's quitting the show!)... I have a vegetarian friend who watched it and told me it was good. Of course the slaughter house scenes make him sick.

It's nasty and scary, so if you like horror movies, go for it!

Oh, does it strictly tackle the meat industry? I was hoping it covered all areas of food.

I know it at least addresses corn but remember I haven't seen all of it yet.

We saw it when it came out. It strengthened us in our resolve to shift our diet more to seasonal, local vegetables, and to find humanely raised meats and eggs.
I believe it's our responsibility to know where our food comes from, and what harm if any its production may do to ourselves and our world. It's said (not original to me) that every meal we eat is a vote for one kind of food or another. We should be aware of what we are voting for.

It wasn't great, but okay. It is truly scary that 4 or 5 companies in the USA control 98 percent of what we (or the vast majority) of us eat. Annie has the right idea.

I am reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver and it is a real eye opener and very entertaining at the same time. Food inc. was a bit on the dry side, but educational.

We should all try to eat more locally grown food as much as possible and grow/raise our own food if possible, at least to some degree. I was amazed last year how one 20 gallon container supplied us with enough fresh carrots for the entire end of summer and fall. I'm looking into having my own flock of chickens for eggs and meat (Through a nearby farm which will sell me the chicks and food and take care of them when I cannot).

Thank you, Duane, I like to think that I'm doing as much good and as little harm as I can, while providing healthy food for my family, my kids, the grandkids.

My lifestyle suits my fiercely independent nature and fortunately I have a high energy level.

I know many or most people can't live the way I'm fortunate enough to live, and I'm grateful for it.

Now, if I just convince Elery that farming is a very healthy hobby and that we aren't SUPPOSED to make a profit!

I haven't seen that one yet, but I did watch King Corn. Have you seen that noe yet? Brought out some interesting things. (it's on instnt view with Netflix.)

I thought the movie was incredible and extremely eye-opening. Yes, only a few major corporations seem to be primarily running the bulk of our food supply in the most important areas. The statement of Monsanto's positioning in this movie is sickening to me, even more so than about the meat for some reason. The movie really brought back my memories of the "sci fi" movie from a long time ago, "Soylent Green" - maybe it wasn't so far-fetched after all. I think EVERYONE should see this. It's quite persuasive but with a lot of facts behind it. I'm a life-long meat eater and haven't changed but the movie leaves a lot more to be desired and think about.

Well, I didn't get to watch it last night. Hopefully soon. I used to work for a non-profit company that provided grants for agricultural research - it's amazing how much is going on out there. A lot of it was student work and I was amazed how many requests for grants did take the organic route and not so much the Frankenfood ways. I may also rent the movie King Corn, sounds interesting. I have a pretty big lot and have a nice size garden which provides us with a lot of produce over the summer/early fall months. Next year I will add more fruit - cherries, blueberries and apples. Can't wait!

beanthere....I watched King Corn and thought it was really good. Food Inc is excellent which is probably why Oprah chose it for her show last week. Another documentary, BAD SEED, The Truth About your Food goes into more detail about GMOs. I would recommend that one too.

I tried to talk a couple of friends into watching Food Inc and they refused because they DON'T want to know. Hard to believe anyone would prefer to bury their head in the sand where food is concerned. If someone is spitting into my hamburger I want to know about it!

Flyingflower, my DH is in the camp with your friends...he doesn't want to know, even though I'm sure to tell him. I've read Omnivore's Dilemma and Pollan's other, newer book (who's title escapes me right now), Fast Food Nation, and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, and found them interesting and somewhat eye opening, although most of it I had already figured out, or knew somehow. I think it might be my years and years of being organically minded and reading lots of stuff on the subject. Of all those books, I found the Kingsolver book to be the most elementary. I'm on the waiting list for Food Inc. at the library. My son watched it and told me it was scary. I don't really expect it to be any different from Omnivore's Dilemma, but I'm curious about it anyway.

There are a couple scenes in Food Inc where you might want to cover your eyes (I did) but they are very short, which is good because you don't want to make the movie so graffic people turn it off. I didn't read Fast Food Nation but I saw the movie. The message is the same but I didn't care for the delivery...a lot of drama, gore, and preachy dialogue.

Food Inc has just been nominated for an Academy Award in the documentary category. I hope it wins!
