Fabric yo-yos--

I have an idea in mind that would use fabric yo-yos and I think they are fairly simple to make and use in designs, but if anyone knows of some web sites and/or books/or their own experience and ideas, I would really appreciate the help.

Hi! Missed this post before. Our Relay for Life team (appropriately named the "Yo Yo Sisterhood)makes different things with the fabric yo-yo's to sell. We have made angel pins, bunny pins, flower pins, little earrings, flowers to trim denim vests, baskets, hand towels, small photo albums, votive holders, etc. They are really easy to make - a good thing to do while you are watching TV or something. We are also planning to put together a bed coverlet - one of our gals has made a ton of yo-yo's for that. I'm curious about your idea. Do you mind sharing?

You have not said how long it takes to make one or your cost of materials. Start to finish, from cost of fabric, to cutting to completing the project. If it takes you an hour, not counting supplies for your 9x12 and your supplies cost say 2-3 dollars, you are not paying yourself enough. So the question would be how long does it take you to make the small and large and what is the cost of supplies. Too many people sell their precious handmade items way too cheaply and then it hurts everybody. Sewing items can take a lot of time for sure. My belief is if you take your crafts seriously enough to sell them as a business, they need to be just that. Why spend hours creating a masterpiece, and give it away. You also need to take into consideration the time at the show. Packing, unpacking and spending hours working the show. You should be paying yourself for that time too :-)

Sweets, You are getting there! Bet it takes allot of yo yos to make a whole quilt. I had a friend who did one and arranged them like flowers--you know, yellow center then petals of pastels around the center. You can make different designs just by how you hook them together, can't you? I cut out a few circles and took them along for a hand craft on a trip, but I've never finished enough to do anything with yet! I enjoyed sitting and working on them--maybe someday I will have enough for a small pillow! Thanks for showing us your quilt. Luvs

Thank you all for all the kind comments. And while I am glad you think I am some kind of "quilting yoyo making genius" LOL I have confessions to make. While the pattern came out of the Jun dated issue, it arrived in my mailbox sometime in April or May. I didn't get started on the yo yo's until May when I scored a bargain at my guild's "yard sale" Got over 350 charm squares for about $5.00. One woman's trash, another woman's treasure! I used the x-large Clover yo yo maker. That little gadget makes yo yo making go very fast, they are consistent in size, and easy. I did them by hand while watching TV in the evenings and I must confess, I got caught up in the Casey Anthony trial on TV and made quite a few watching that....my little guilty secret...LOL so a few were made during the day as well. The pattern calls for 409 yo yo's. You then cut 3 1/2 x 42" strips of background fabric and hand sew the yo yo's to the strips, just an 1/8 of inch from edge of yo yo. Another TV hand work project. The strips are then sewn together (end to end and then side by side) by machine, stitch in the ditch quilting, bind and done. And while I am confessing.....I have a tendency to get tunnel vision when working on a project, I pretty much just work at it until done. Which is why I don't have but maybe two or three UFO's. UFO's just drive me crazy! Nannykins, I have seen those yo yo quilts where hundreds if not thousands of yo yo's are just sewn to each other to make a top. They are beautiful and I think, to use them, you just lay on a bed with a neutral background and let them look great on their own. Again, thank you for your kind comments. Murphy

Barb, what great ideas your group has used! I would love to see any/all of the projects.

My idea was to make a Christmas tree out of yo-yos---I don't know yet if I would make it a plain triangle shape or try to give an effect of branches or what. I plan for the truck (brown) and the pot (red) to be solid fabric-not yo-yos. The tree will be decorated with Christmas fabric print yo-hos and a really cute tinsel--you stitch small yo-yos every 6 inches or so on baby sized gold or silver rickrack and put that on the tree-very country looking and cute.

As usual with my craft ideas, this one is working out great in my head but I haven't actually tried to do it yet so we shall see!

Barb, thanks so much for posting the pictures. Your group has had some wonderful ideas--I especially liked the basket and the pin/earrings.

I've purchased about everything I need to try the yo-yo tree so I guess now I have to design it!
