Finished Yo Yo Row Quilt

I finished the Yo Yo Row Quilt yesterday and wanted to share with you. This is the cover quilt on BH&G American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine June 2011 issue. Started it as soon as I received the magazine and finished yesterday. Went pretty fast and was also easy. Something I look for in quilt patterns!

And as I say about all my quilts.....'it may not be perfect, but it is done!'

Nice and very interesting pattern for yo-yo's! I think they are time consuming, but great as a pick up and go project.

What a cute quilt that is! I don't know how Yo-Yo's can go fast, but I think you did a great job on this. Don't think I've ever seen a yo-yo quilt like this but I like it! Did you sew them on the background fabric by hand?

Finchlover, the only reason for not quilting in the ditch is that you won't be able to see your quilting stitches. If you're quilting with a machine it doesn't matter because they will all be the same size anyway. If you quilt by hand and have beautiful, neat, even, tiny quilting stitches, you wouldn't do them justice by hiding them in the ditch. You'd want to show them off by stitching a fancy pattern on the face of the quilt. I've been quilting for about 36 years, not sure how many I've made during that time, maybe 35 or 40. Some larger some smaller, some machine pieced and hand quilted, some all handmade. Made a few embroidered tops and hand quilted. I've only made one quilt that was machine quilted and I did quilt in the ditch. I made it about 20 years ago and I'm still using it. Made a few whole cloth quilts, small ones for babies, pink, yellow, blue, lavender, that had tons of quilting on them. I use a lap hoop to do the quilting and generally hand piece the tops. Haven't done an applique top in a long time, but I've been thinking about a cute butterfly pattern I saw recently on e-Bay I'd like to try. I confess I have several tops that need to be quilted, but since I use a lap hoop, I really do need cold weather to do them. My current project is a yo-yo quilt, which isn't really a quilt at all, but it takes a real long time to make and uses a lot of different fabrics and requires a lot of hand sewing. I just finished cutting out 4000 2" squares for a postage stamp quilt and I have a sack of 2" x 45" strips to piece together and cut out a four pointed star quilt top. Lastly, I'm still in the gathering stage of a silk quilt using men's silk neck ties. I have collected about 50 ties, taken out the stitching and facings and have the fabric neatly waiting until I have enough to start piecing. I figure for a nice sized quilt that's suitable for display I'll need about 250 ties. Using all the silk, I'll stabilize it with fusable interfacing, join the bits into thirty 12" squares, Then sew the squares together. The best part of the silk crazy quilt is the embroidery on each seam embellishing it and giving it character and charm. I made a small one (45" X 56")for my mom years ago and it was so much fun. If you find that you love quilting, you'll be hooked for life. In 1976 I was in the Navy and had a mid watch at the women's barracks. When I walked into the watch office the woman on duty was piecing a postage stamp quilt. She had a grocery sack full of tiny squares and several completed blocks. It hit me like a cold shower. When I got off watch the next morning I went home and cut up a bunch of old clothes, some tablecloths, several of my husband's shirts (he was overseas at the time) and I started quilting that day. Since then I've never lost the bug. I agree with bellaroma you should take a beginners class. It's better than teaching yourself and making all the mistakes that will cost you time and money and could ruin your drive to continue quilting. Learn the basics first. Cheryl P.S. I just scored a major stash of quilting fabrics at an estate sale. I got about 50 yards of various cotton quilting fabrics for $6. The lady was a quilter and had her stash separated into color groups, so I just scooped them out of her handy bins and into my shopping sack. Lord rest her dear soul, she had the biggest stash I've ever seen so I guess she was the winner.

I took a picture of it from above yesterday. I guess I just never got around to posting it here.. Sal, thanks for the compliments. The first time I walked into my FIL and step-MIL's house I saw their table and knew I found the table I would just die to have! About a year later, Ames had them on sale for $188. DH and I put it on layaway and got it a few months later, right before all the Ames stores shut down. This poor table looked like H#LL until New Years. It was pine and had a crappy finish and it just showed everything and didn't look clean. I refinished it two days before New Years..not the best idea..but I LOVE it now. I was covering it all up with a table cloth for so long that it's nice to get to enjoy the table with just a runner! oddie, I actually saw an all white yo-yo runner with a crocheted edge in The Country House catalog about 3 years ago. I saved that catalog to show my Gram because I knew she had been working on a bag of yo-yo's for some time but we never saw what these things looked like assembled! About a year later, I started making my own. I have wanted to make that runner for the longest time but I either was doing something else or didn't have enough fabric. This isn't exactly like that one but it was my attempt at my own. I don't like following patterns at all. I go with whatever I want to do!

Quilt Backings or how would you back this?

Here is a link to some ides - I have only completed 10 quilts so far, and my favorite back is on a quilt I quickly put together from Lotto blocks and fabric I had. I was forced to piece the back with scraps from the blocks I had submitted and the fabric I used for the front. I like the all one fabric backs the least, but they look good. I like the interest of a random design of piecing for the back - sort of an unexpected element. Your question is timely for me, as I want to concentrate on making backs more interesting. I am interested in what others say. I read somewhere that someone likes to start her backs using a preprinted panel that ties into the front. I did on the Veggies Jar Quilt I just completed. My Mama passed almost seven years ago, and I am still working on her fabric stash, but with materials used for quilting and also every other type of material one could need. I started quilting about a year before she died, and my first quilt was a Christmas gift for her, I finished in February. I kept company with her as I was quilting and she watched it come together, not knowing it was for her. She had always wanted to make a quilt, and had started the blocks for a Cathedral Windows, inspired by a friend when we lived in Missouri, as state just famous for it's cottage quilt industry. When one drove through the Ozarks, it was commonplace to see them hung out on clotheslines, to catch the eye of passers-by. She had also made some yo-yos but they disappeared sometime and I've never found them. I wish you much enjoyment with your new hobby. I think you'll find yourself close to her spirit as you work, as I find myself close to my mother when I am in my sewing room, handling the fabrics she had saved over the years. I have made about thirty quilts since then, really surprising myself since making ONE quilt was on my bucket list. LOL. Welcome to the forum, and my condolences as well on your mother's passing. BTW, that is one beautiful design you will be finishing. I also have a quilt cat who loves to lay on my blocks and scatter them too. He keeps me company each morning as I sew, and prefers my sewing room to all the others in this house.

Very cute!! Did you machine stitch the yo-yo's to the top? I did a few yo-yo's as an accent on another quilt and I wasn't very good with them. I hope they get easier the more you do?

When a friend of my husband's was cleaning out after his mother's death, he found 2 yo-yo tops, single size, and made probably in the 40's. They are not backed, just the yo-yos. I have them and have no idea what to do with them. Any suggestions???

When I was a child my GAunt was big on hand crafts and had lots of things made from yo-yo's but they were out of fashion for many years until now that they have the yo-yo tool that makes them easier. Saw a demo on Fon and Porter the other morning.
Your quilt makes them stand on their own and makes for an interesting quilt. I am sure it required many hrs. of intense work to make. I can see why you are happy it is finished. Nice job. TFS

Really nice job. Love your colors. I'm also curious if you hand appliqued them to backing.

It also may be the only yo-yo quilt I have ever liked, LOL, since I've never been a fan. But your quilt is gorgeous.

Thank you all for all the kind comments. And while I am glad you think I am some kind of "quilting yoyo making genius" LOL I have confessions to make. While the pattern came out of the Jun dated issue, it arrived in my mailbox sometime in April or May. I didn't get started on the yo yo's until May when I scored a bargain at my guild's "yard sale" Got over 350 charm squares for about $5.00. One woman's trash, another woman's treasure! I used the x-large Clover yo yo maker. That little gadget makes yo yo making go very fast, they are consistent in size, and easy. I did them by hand while watching TV in the evenings and I must confess, I got caught up in the Casey Anthony trial on TV and made quite a few watching that....my little guilty secret...LOL so a few were made during the day as well. The pattern calls for 409 yo yo's. You then cut 3 1/2 x 42" strips of background fabric and hand sew the yo yo's to the strips, just an 1/8 of inch from edge of yo yo. Another TV hand work project. The strips are then sewn together (end to end and then side by side) by machine, stitch in the ditch quilting, bind and done.
And while I am confessing.....I have a tendency to get tunnel vision when working on a project, I pretty much just work at it until done. Which is why I don't have but maybe two or three UFO's. UFO's just drive me crazy!
Nannykins, I have seen those yo yo quilts where hundreds if not thousands of yo yo's are just sewn to each other to make a top. They are beautiful and I think, to use them, you just lay on a bed with a neutral background and let them look great on their own.

Murphy, I love your quilt! The bright green background really sets off the yo-yos.

One lady in my guild made a bunch of quilts while watching the trial. She calls them her Caylee quilts because she can't bring herself to say "that other name."

This is an interesting quilt....I like it. The green background really shows off the yo-yos. I wouldn't have the patience for it even with the yo-yo maker.

i think your quilt is darling. Congrats!! I've made yo-yo's ok but sewing them together or on something is another story.
I started making a yo-yo vest but never finished have to find the pic.
