Vanilla

Do you prefer to get vanilla from the carribean countries when possibly when you are visiting or a friend is? I remember getting some in the DR years ago and thought it was a bit richer and not so alcohol like in taste as compared to what I have been buying at Costco. A friend of a friend is on a cruise and am contemplating her asking her to pick up a few bottles for me but I don't know if my brain is remembering a really good trip or a really good bottle of vanilla. Thanks.

I like MADAGASGAR sp? Vanilla but that usually all i buy so cant really comment on other brands.

I started making my own using rum...but I used Costco's before now. And the only time I had an alcohol problem was in pudding when it didn't get totally cooked off..but don't have that problem with my homemade rum/vanilla.

Sure why not have her bring you a goodie..it's always nice to have something different in the kitchen.

It is usually vigorous with large, dense blooms. Pruning is typically not needed but can quickly regain its previous dimensions in a few growing seasons if there are no nutrient deficiencies/toxicities or weather/disease issues.

"Standard" and "tree form" are interchangeable terms :-) Either refers to a multi-stemmed shrub that has been trained from a very young age as a single stemmed plant. While you can, with time, patience and a lot of care, train a more mature, already bushy shrub like yours into a standard, it is far easier to start with a small seedling plant or from a cutting. This is the reason standard or tree form shrubs are so expensive compared to their naturally shaped cousins - all those years of hands-on care and training to get that baby to a decent, salable size. Depending on the type of shrub, this is a 5-10 year (or more) process.

You'll have the same issue with Caribbean vanillas as with Mexican. Labeling is unreliable and odds are the vanilla your friend gets will be imitation.

If it's dark, viscous and thick and you really like the intense vanilla fragrance it's probably fake.

The last figure I read was that 99% of the vanilla sold in the region is imitation. If your friend pays about what you would in the U.S. for quality vanilla, it's more likely to be real.

Ihad a friend bring me back some Caribbean vanilla. I tossed it. I prefer getting from our country where I know there and regulations. I get huge bottles of Mexican vanilla from Penzey's.

Cookie cut some beans in half...plop into a bottle of your liquor of choice..and put in a dark place...shake every few days...try to hold off using for at least a month...just gets better and better with age...top off the alcohol when you need to...I think you can do that a few times...I haven't gotten to the top of part yet. LOL
