Do I want a 'media center' on my fridge?

Hello! We are comparing GE Profile PFSS9PKYSS vs. PFSS9SKYSS. The only difference, is that the latter one has an electronic 7" display, where, in addition to the temperature and humidity information, that the cheaper one shows on a simpler panel, it can show pictures (up to 30). GE's marketing blurb says:

7-inch Media center

The media center with 7-inch LCD screen provides measurement conversions, nutritional information and substitution suggestions. The center also controls all functions of the refrigerator, including temperature settings, TurboCoolÂ and the integrated ice and water dispenser. And 30 photos to be uploaded and used as a slide show or screen saver.

The price difference is over $300 or just under 15%. Do I want that feature Â is it useful/entertaining Â or should I go with the simpler model?

That's pretty cool alright! I'm a "gadget girl" thru and thru but in my older (and wiser) age, I've become more discerning. My vote is NO. Save your money.

Wow, thanks for the information- I've never had that kind of luck with getting ModPodge to harden. You may very well be right-- it could be it was either too damp or not warm enough in the house. The nice thing about sealing over ModPodge or other glue products is that if you get enough layers over it, the decoupage has a sort of recessed/inlaid feel to it. First thing to determine is how much of the EC is actually wood. If you have part of the EC made of a laminated board, it won't stain, but can be painted. If you build furniture and are familiar with stain, then sanding, prep, stain and top coat will be a major undertaking. If you don't build furniture, then the job will be a major undertaking and then some. I envision 5 piece EC as being large. Me personally, if you can't live with the golden oak, then paint it. If you have to stain it, let a professional do it, or consider selling the EC and buying a new one that is the color of your liking. Painting over stain is a challenge because it is hard to get paint to stick to the existing finish. That is my short answer, the long answer is to long for this forum. If you decide to paint it, go to a reputable paint store like Sherwin Williams and get instructions from them on how to paint over an existing finish. Good luck!

I usually cook alone, and my dishwasher is in my prep area right now. I find it's always in the way. These are reasons why I might need the dishwasher while prepping/cooking. I'm listing them in case any of them might come up for you: 1) The dishwasher just ran a load. This is common if the kitchen is such a mess that I have to clean it up before I start cooking. It runs and finishes while I'm cooking, and then I would prefer to be able to open the dishwasher door and let the items in it finish drying/cooling down so I can unload in between cooking steps. That frees up the dishwasher to be loaded with the dishes I just created from cooking after I'm done. 2) I have a few minutes free while cooking and start cleaning up my cooking dishes -- I usually have most of the kitchen cleaned by the time I'm done cooking. 3) I forgot that some of the utensils I need for cooking are sitting in the dishwasher and have to open it to retrieve them. Other considerations: The plan where your dishwasher is next to the cooktop also puts the dishwasher much farther from the sink and perpendicular to it . That is far less ergonomic for loading purposes and involves way more dripping on the floor than a dishwasher that is simply right next to the sink. You need space between the fridge and the wall to its left to allow the fridge door to open far enough for you to be able to get the fridge drawers out. Usually people do a 9-12" skinny pantry pullout between the fridge and wall. If you are not already planning for this, typically we recommend that your hood be 6" wider than the range (so a 36" hood for a 30" range). Steam/cooking fumes spread as they rise, so a slightly wider hood does a better job capturing it all. In lieu of a counter overhand, you might make the banquette top material something that could also serve as a counter -- butcher block, maybe -- for the times when you want to sit while you work. It'll be a much bigger work surface, so you can spread out, and people generally find table height seating more comfortable than counter height seating anyway.

What's in the armoire? I would place it opposite the fireplace to serve as a visual counter balance to it. Then put your TV on the former armoire wall, above a credenza 25% wider than the TV. Hang large art 5" above the mantel. Use your sofa table behind the sofa without the buffet lamps (do you have a formal dining room for them?) Remove the bergere chair as it doesn't fit the casual feeling of the other seating pieces. Do you have a foyer where it would be pretty? Put the large armchair in its place. Try a new, more casual feeling rug and drapes. Replace all the other art and photos with new art. Hang pieces centered 5' above the floor or 5" above furniture. Upgrade all the lamps and add a nice ceiling fixture in place of the fan. If you like the idea of a mirror above the mantle, you could install a pretty chandelier to be reflected in it.

For $300 or so you can buy an Asus (or similar) netbook and some Velcro. Much more usable, IMHO

I hear you, but laptop will involve cables, etc. This 7" "media center" is neatly integrated...

I guess, I'll give up on it anyway :-)

As cool as that would be I think the functionality would be too limed. A touchscreen computer in the kitchen would be 100 times more useful.

I'm happy that our new frige won't hold magnets! Imagine that - a clean, clutter free refrigerator door :)

Just at night when you're sneaking into the kitchen for that last piece of strawberry whipped cream pie....the picture is taken just as you open the door and the light blinks ON.

I'd say a big NO on the 'media-center', dollars to donuts it will be the first thing that breaks on any of those fridges.

If you have the extra money in the budget there are a lot of really neat kitchen toys you can get for under 300 which are way more functional.

Back when I was a retail buyer, my product engineer was looking at some odd 'multi-purpose gadget' that incorporated things that had no logical connection to each other. His reaction is something I now quote often, when I see products like the fridge with TV:

"About as useful as an ashtray on a bicycle"

I wouldn't do it; it's likely to break, especially being so near to water. It could possibly take space from the refrigerator. Keep things as simple as possible.

I do have a recycled Mac laptop computer in the kitchen, paired with some older Soundstick speakers. Even tho it is 5 years old, it still can access the net, store and display recipes, display thousands of photos in a screensaver slideshow, play my music, or stream AM radio. It sits in the corner on an aluminum stand that gets it up off the counter.
