Oh boy, it's Friday, good thing. I've had one of those weeks when everything breaks, my waterbed sprung a leak and even my electric toothbrush quit working. Geez, I gotta stop touching stuff....

But Elery will be here tonight, Ashley is spending the weekend finishing up her St. Jude's fund raising, we'll go to the farm on Sunday and then go play with Princess and Bruvver.

It's supposed to be cold here and snowy, highs in the teens, lows around zero, snow, windchills way cold. I think I'll stay inside as much as possible, even if I LIKE Michigan winters!

Happy Friday Everyone! Annie, even when you don't have many plans you sound busy! Enjoy! It's supposed to be really nasty here in Eastern NC, very cold, ice and snow! I am soo ready for Spring! Stay safe everyone!

Diane, we are NOT getting older. Nope, we're not. 2013 sure flew, though. Lars, I'm sorry December was so difficult for you, I hope January is much better, and all of 2014. I'm sending you hugs, and some to Kevin too. Grainlady, here I have the world's best neighbor. He has a snowblower on his lawn tractor and always clears the driveway. In return I bake him bread. It's a great deal for me! Katie, beans and cornbrad sound really good, I need to get some more of those mayacoba beans, I like them a lot. Rob, you are definitely way late on the gloves. My problem is that I can't seem to do anything with gloves on, so whether it's pumping gas or shoveling hay, I end up pulling the gloves off anyway. Ellen, enjoy those grandkids. I have the Princess and Bud here for the night, so they baked cookies with Elery and we'll have Nutella Crepes for breakfast. Here I finally got garlic into the dehydrator, it was starting to sprout in the cellar. I had planned to keep some for seed garlic but since I put the house up for sale in October and my nephew was still living at the farm, I didn't know where the heck to plant it. So, all that heirloom garlic that Katie sent me is now dried garlic. (sigh) Maybe next year. Tomorrow we'll take the kids home and feed the stock and fill tanks. It was a high of 10F here today and about -3 when I went to the farm. It'll be in the single digits to below zero until the middle of next week and then warm up, but we have "dangerous wind chill" alerts going from Sunday until Tuesday. Sounds fun (Palm Springs). I'm in New Jersey. Flew here today for my grandmother's funeral. She passed away last week, at 105 y/o. Her life was very full and long, her last year had been in a sort of gently fading twilight, and her death was, it seems, pretty peaceful and painless, at home with no tubes or machines. So her passing was as gentle as it should have been. Life was kind to her, and at the end no less. Laying on the couch, lights off, thinking about this house and the things left over from fifty years of being my grandparents' home. There are photographs, my grandfather's calligraphy scrolls, my grandmother's needlepoint art. Those will be taken, I suppose many have already been over the past couple of years. Then there is the random daily stuff that has no value, but that I recognize from fifty years of visiting and sometimes living here. Old toys and books, dishes, things like that. I suppose it will all be disposed of, except for a few bits that people might take for sentimental reasons. Then the house will be sold, as a fixer because it needs a total remodel, although in a nice neighborhood with a good sized lot. And that may, I think, be it for New Jersey, for me. My aunt and uncle and one first cousin live here, but without my grandparents, my connection to this place, a place I never liked much, will be done. I think I'm going to cook dinner tomorrow at my aunt's. She has a nice Bluestar range and that is where most of the family will be. Her daughter, my other first cousin, is flying in tomorrow. She lives in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where her husband works for the United Nations. I don't think they like it as much as Switzerland, where they lived for the last several years. But the UN HCR (High Commission For Refugees) moves its senior staff around every several years. They don't get permanent cushy posts in comfortable cities; they have to go where the refugees are, so Ethiopia was, I think, better than some places they might have ended up. There isn't much scope for home cooking as an expat in Addis Ababa, I'm told. Especially with young kids who are adapting from their previous Franco-Swiss diet (and life). So I figure she might like a dinner at home, at her mom's home anyway. Menu undecided but I'm thinking about chicken marbela. I also have a hankering for ceviche. They may not go together, but tough. Otherwise, no interesting cooking recently. I have spent the last month on back to back to back business trips. So I've been eating like crap - airport food, hotel food, restaurant food. Occasionally a good ramen or other street food in New York, but mostly crap. As the weeks of this have dragged on, and I've gotten fatter and flabbier, I've started skipping restaurants altogether and going to grocery stores and delis to get "healthy" things to eat. So my diet has mostly dwindled to Greek yoghurt, canned sardines and tuna, bread and cheese, fruit, takeout sushi, and coffee. It's not a bad diet but there isn't much cooking or variety involved. Although I have discovered that canned tuna plus Greek yoghurt plus a little salt or soy sauce makes a creditable and oh-so-healthy tuna salad. And that chopped raw salmon, Greek yoghurt, and one of those super-miniature bottles of hot sauce that you can filch from restaurants makes a reasonable spicy salmon filling. When I get home on Monday, I don't have another trip on the calendar for months. I'm going to cook up a storm, enjoy being home on weekends, re-acquaint myself with bicycling everywhere, lose this travel flab, and appreciate springtime in Portland.

First time poster on these threads but read them all the time. Annie, I feel your pain! Hubby retired 9/1 of last year, we put our old home on the market 10/4, moved and arrived at our new home the night before Thanksgiving (dinner last Turkey day was hot dogs and mac&cheese). We knew that we were going to be downsizing drastically when we were house hunting down here so the fixing, tossing, donating, going thru everything, yard sales, getting the house ready for listing, packing and dealing with the moving company almost did us in. Dinner last night (Friday) was ribeyes, twiced baked potatoes and brussel sprouts with garlic and bacon, roasted in butter and a little bacon grease. The best part was that hubby did all the cooking, which is very unusual (but much appreciated). Ate in the living room while watching the latest Star Trek movie that is now on DVD. Tonight we're having a very simple dinner. With my new found skills with making a good meatloaf, we're having meatloaf sandwiches, which we both prefer over a meatloaf dinner. Meatloaf is in the oven right now. Hubby had wanted to go out in the boat today but I nixed that idea as I'm feeling really lazy today. Mainly because the lake is always crowded with out of towners during the weekends. Most of whom think drinking and boating are one and the same. So we're going out tomorrow as most of the boaters will have left or will be working. A late lunch or early dinner will be at a restaurant that faces the London Bridge after we get back. Haven't been out on the lake since August when we had a large almost two week long get-together with very dear friends and family. When we moved here we were told that there were a few months when it's actually too hot to be boating (unless you spend all of your time IN the water instead of on it) and that even swimming pools often get too hot to be enjoyable during the heat. We scoffed....but found out how true that was. Went thru our first monsoon season here and boy was that interesting. Now that the temps have cooled off somewhat we want to take advantage of it. Wow. That's one nice looking Clematis Edward. Clematis season has long since passed here (except for the yet to bloom but invasive Sweet Autumn Clematis). The hybrid Clematis leaves around town look pretty bad by now from their exposure to our summer heat and various fungal diseases. Your climate sure suites that vine beautifully and again that pairing with Vertical Horizon is a great combination...........Maryl

Happy Friday, clinking(?) with my styrofoam cup of morning tea! You got this one started early!!

Tomorrow we're going to see Avatar in 3-D the at IMAX theater near our house. We had to buy the tickets a week and a half in advance, as everything less than a week old was sold out. It should be an interesting experience, even though I'm not keen on going to new movies in theaters. I hated the new Star Trek movie in IMAX, but that's probably because the director thought he was directing a TV show (This was his first movie), and the camera work reflected this.

It's supposed to be 70Â° today, as it was yesterday, and the snow on the nearby mountains north of my house is long gone, although it was back earlier this week. I hope everyone in OK and points east are coping with the ice.

There will be an unusually large full moon tonight, if you can get out to see it. I think we will have clear skies, and so I will look for it. I'm not sure which direction is east from my house, however, as my street curves, and my house is on the diagonal.

Cold and dry here in Philly :-( I wish we could have another whomper of a snow storm and the kids could get another round of sledding, etc in.

Annie - I dunno girlfriend, if everything you are touching is breaking, you might want to keep Elery at arms distance (g, d, r) LOLOLOL!

Gina - stay warm and safe, ice is scary stuff to be out driving or walking in.....

I am ripping out the carpet padding and I just finished painting the trim in the MBR. Once I finish the last of the staple removal and screwing down the squeaky spot in the sub-floor and I am ready to start putting down the swiftlock flooring. We debated back and forth, but decided for the BR's where there isn't a lot of traffic we would do laminate. Once the floor is down I will make a final decision on the stain color for the new closet doors and the new built-in DH and I are constructing.

So yea - the whole weekend is trying to get the MBR to the point we can move back in... sleeping on the futon in the kids playroom isn't nearly as much fun as we thought it would be LOLOL!

Happy and safe weekend to all and I may be clinking sooner rather than later... I've been at it since 5 AM and feel like I've put in a full day already!

Lars I hope to see that moon tonight. Chilly but sunny here today but we have thunder storms and torrential rain predicted for the weekend up to Tuesday. We'll see. I'm going to wash the thick flannelette sheets so that will surely bring on enough rain so that I can't hang them out to dry.

I just spent the last few days visiting my DM. Had a good visit but am glad to be home. No big plans for this weekend, I have enough to keep me busy in the new upstairs. I had to empty all the closets for carpeting to be laid, now it's time to put them back together. Will be purging more as I go. Hanging on to 'stuff' has got to end!

Nancy, I did point out to Elery that I never had a problem with this waterbed mattress until he started spending weekends. (grin) We'll overlook the fact that it's about 20 years old and lay the responsiblity on something a lot more fun!

I've got to get with you too, get some ideas for filling for those tortilla roll-ups and bounce some ideas off you for keeping things hot/cold.

I'm on for a 12 hour shift today... 3 to 3. No bar beer after work tonight. Gal friend I'm sort of sweet on at the moment has flown off to Florida to be in a wedding. Just got my truck back from the paint shop. I hit two deer early in the month doing $2400 in damage. I didn't see the deer and my new glasses came in yesterday... $600!... yikes. Annual meeting at work this week. We hit a bigger profit on lower sales... percentage gain was huge. Funny as can be that in the auto industry during the worst recession of our lives the company should be making such gains. One of the product lines I lead was used as an example of productivity gains so I had a proud parent moment. Down moment when it was announced a new product line we hoped for looks like it was awarded to a chinese company. We sell some product to China so I don't have anything against them getting the work other then disappointed we didn't get it.

Big week it was. Might have to crack open a new bottle of Glenlivet French Oak Reserve tonight after work. Not much because I have to work Saturday.

D@mn cold here too but bright and sunny with no sign of snow. We have had very little snow this year. OK by me, if I can't have it for Christmas then I just plain don't want it!

Nothing exciting planned. Tonight we're going to the local pub with Chris and Amity and that's about it!

Clive helped me with a geometric rug hooking pattern this week so I think I'll do some colour planning , look through my wools and generally cocoon.

Must be something in the air with rugs. Clive has decided to rip out the den room rug and lay down laminate. I'm not thrilled with the idea but I don't care enough to mount a counter argument plus it will keep him out of my hair. He can do his rug thing while I do my rug thing! LOL

Lars thanks for the heads up on the brightest full moon of the year tonight. We have a fantastic clear sky and the moon is incredible....it's so big and bright.
I ran outside and was able to photograph the best moon shots I've done so far. I don't have a telephoto lens yet so just used my little Olympus cam with the 18 x zoom.

I'll put the pic over in Conversations. Thanks again!

Not much happening in this stretch of the woods either. Just got back from visiting the out-laws in Le Canto Florida yesterday. I really wanted to do something a bit more exciting, but since DW's dad is 80 and mom a few years younger I thought we should spend a few days with them. It's really hard being self employed with people counting on me to take any time off. Last year we did the same thing. Just sitting on their lanai reading and sipping a brewski and having somebody else make food for me is a real treat. It's not like palm-tree Florida. More like horse country..and it looks an awful lot like Michigan....pine trees instead of palm trees. There are some palm trees but it's a real kind of 'old florida' which I actually find endearing. A lot of old mobile homes and a laided back lifestyle for sure.

Just chilling with a few dogs this weekend and a getting back into the normal routine. Now is the time I start looking at seed catalogues and planning the summer garden. Won't be long before I start some early crops. Sure wish I had more property to really go gung-ho (Hi Annie!). I want to try potatoes this year and may have to go the container route. Funny thing is last year I sprinkled some carrot seeds in a container and had more than we could eat all year long! So may try to do more container gardening....bush beans, peas, cukes etc. Maybe I will hit the lottery and be able to buy that farm. Not counting on it though.

Anyway, I think I am really rambling and OT for the TGIF thread. Glad to be home even though it's colder than a witches $(#!!!!!!

I have 17 people at my table tonight and I have a cold, courtesy of DH. Thanks DH.

Luckily I'm spreading out the cooking duty - others are bringing a salad, veggie side, pasta dish. I'm providing appetizers and main (simple strata, bread/eggs/milk/cheese/sauteed onions) and as soon as I get out of bed I'll set up a clafouti with TJ's morello cherries. I did buy a chocolate cake from the store, I only have so much energy, whine. Oly came over and checked my strata, I thought it was too dry and she agreed so we poured more milk into it. Thanks Oly! I have one challah in the oven and one in the freezer. Kids and DH do NOT like frozen challahs so I'll put it on the other side of the table from them...heh heh

Annie, let me know if you have success patching or replacing your bed mattress. We've had a few leaks before when we had one, no fun.

We need to see Avatar soon too. DH only wants to see it with reserved seating in a 3D Imax place. Sheesh, but he is right.

Bunnyman, try Costco next time for glasses?

Jessica, my new mattress has "been shipped" and should be here tomorrow, hopefully.

In the meantime, Elery had supper and is sound asleep on the couch, I might just leave him there, not much sense in waking him up to let him sleep on the couch, LOL.

Duane, it's a long trip for you to come and weed your garden, or I'd offer you as much garden space as you'd like.

Michael, I got new glasses last year, but I went and got my check up and made them give me a prescription, then when JCPenney had a $99 sale, I bought a pair!

TGIF for sure. A whole week away from work for me....a weekend at home and then five days in Boise. I'll have to work a little, but I'm on an advisory committee that gets to recommend grant awards for the few federal dollars we get for our libraries. We have enough to cover all the applications, so unless someone wrote a really bad grant, it should be a warm and fuzzy week, topped off with one of Aunt Margaret's family meals (most likely fall-apart-tender pot roast and featherlight rolls....mmmm).

I just got home from working a chili feed at our first annual Bear Naked Winter Festival. Tomorrow was supposed to be snowshoe golf and snowshoe waiter races but there is no snow, so they will use swim fins. The ice sculpting contest has been canceled....it was 42F today.

My sympathies to everyone having to deal with a nasty winter. We had our share last year and I am very thankful for El Nino this year.

In my recliner, cold feet wrapped in blanket, with hot cider and rum...~clink!~
