Is this still being done ?

Tho being retired sometimes it seems like every day's the same but now that fall if here it's going to mean chili &/or hotdogs at the Grandkids football & field hockey games-- and glasses raised will probably be cocoas !

I'm toasting all with my Vanilla chai-- that my final PT session was this morning, that your favorite teams will win this weekend and you enjoy whatever's planned with family & friends.

I tried a little bit ago, but alas no. I'll join you though! Happy Friday Diane! toasting with my mug of soup since it's now lunch time. Final PT? I bet you love the feel of that. Not just accomplishment, but back to the land of the living. I assume you mean physical therapy? At any rate that's what I am talking about! Go team! I'm just gonna relax. It's been hectic and I'm ready to take it slow, sleep in, and do nothing.

I rarely posted but I'll play - is it me or is this forum SLOW lately?

Wife just commented how the house smells like her Yia-Yia's used to and wondered why. Um, lamb bones roasting, getting ready to be turned into stock. That was supposed to be for tomorrow's dinner but she just reminded me we won't be home. Maybe Sunday's.

I'm about to pick up a cello at my son's school. Not the typical instrument a fourth grade boy would choose, but I guess he wants to take after his father. I'm flattered. Tomorrow my daughter has a soccer game, if you want to call it that. Typical first year players, running in a pack up and down the field. After that we're going to a Mets game. Neighbor invited us, box seats. I'm not a baseball fan but am looking forward to seeing the "new" stadium.

Sunday hopefully we'll finish getting things back into our new kitchen, and more importantly out of my son's new bedroom. He's been looking forward to that for far too long now.

Counting down to happy hour. Vodka is already on the counter. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Yes, Marian! I have had a terrible time getting this site to load over the past few days. I've gotten "page cannot be displayed" many times and simply haven't had the time to wait around to try again. We received a dusting of snow last night (2-3") and it's really windy today. A harbinger of the arctic blast destined to arrive for the coming week, no doubt. In preparation, we allowed the stove to get cold and removed the accumulated ashes. I uncovered an abandonned mouse nest in the woodpile this morning. I haven't decided if they were brave or really stupid to attempt it, or if they were part of the string of dead mice that appeared next to the door some weeks ago... . Ei., good luck with the job hunt. It's been a long time since I've interviewed for a position that wasn't directly related to my skill/trade, but I do recall vividly being asked this question: "Soo... tell me about yourself"! So there are "gaps" in your "work history"? So what? it's what you did with that time that really counts. And there's nothing wrong with simply saying, "I don't know how to do that yet. I can learn.". Don't let an interviewer intimidate you; remember, you're interviewing them, too! Reapply for the position that has already seen two casualties. The worst they'll say to you is, "No." and they've already done that. The position remains unfilled, too! :) Martie, there are basically 3 types of foam. There is the "usual" kind found in sofa cushions. It varies in density, and it will absorb water since it's basically a sponge available in different densities. There is "reticulated" foam. This has a very "open" structure and if your pour water on top of it it will run right through it (ideal for outdoor furniture). Lastly, there is "closed cell foam". This is very dense (it floats) and resists water infiltration to the cells (they're "closed"). This is a standard for quality cockpit cushions on boats, and also in life jackets. Its structure makes it very dense, therefore, "harder" to sit on; it lacks "squishibility". It's harder to make covers for too. I kicked my weekend off with an early Friday morning doctor's app't., the routine kind to which we all so look forward. ;) Next week it's mammogram time, and an eye exam. The "middle age" thing is starting to manifest itself with my vision. My "burgundy" blaze is shrinking, but it still looks sort of silly... my "dumb badge" ; We enjoyed a late lunch and matinee yesterday. We saw "Dreamgirls" and it was the first time I've ever experienced "stadium seating" (it was nice!). We weren't that impressed by the movie, though. There were some very good performances and costumes, but we agreed there was nothing in the characters' personalities that made either of us really "care about them". We found the movie "long". And the music so-so. The jewel though, was a DVD purchase: "Little Miss Sunshine"!! We laughed and laughed through that one. Marian: it's a GREAT story about family with some frank language about sex and drugs. I think you would enjoy it. It's very, very funny. I am not wild about Magenta, but I have a tree peony that has pretty flowers about that color. My picture files are such a mess I'll never find it. Your lovely combinations, though, have me thinking about it differently. I have to say, I'm rather enjoying the winter, I was sorry the snow fell at night. The house is warm, filled with light from sunup to sundown, and its nice to "have it back". It's 11 AM and I'm still in my jammies and about to start the laundry. There isn't anything else I "have to get done before I start..." . I'm not freaked about by a messy desk, any more. I'm thinking it will be fun to clean it up! It's been a long time since I've felt that way and that's why I empathize with those experiencing "confinement" of any sort.

'bug I do remember that candle scene in the English Patient, very much so. Anthony Minghella passed away too young (54) a few weeks back. Overheard conversation in an upscale nursery yesterday: "Do you have any candles that won't melt in the sun?" The expression on the salesperson's face could best be described as stupefied. She quickly recovered tho and suggested surrounding them in ice chips. Another, less famous, Hollywood screenwriter passed away this week. My brother notified me by email having read the NYT obit, a screenwriter named Abby Mann who wrote Judgment at Nuremberg. I worked for Mr. Mann for about a year, get this, taking screenplay dictation by shorthand in his home off Sunset Blvd. One girl would go in for dictation then leave to type up those notes while another girl cycled in to take dictation, etc. Sometimes there were 3 of us, all of us paid by the studio as part of project development. It was one of my more bizarre jobs, to say the least. Maybe now I can write that expose (kidding!!) He was good friends with Tony Bennett, so my one celebrity encounter was over the phone with Mr. Bennett, about five words. More on the movie front. The Nat'l Geo special on the ports had a preview screening to LA Harbor employees and, sad to say, most of Marty's footage ended up on the cutting room floor. I didn't attend but am told he is seen briefly, barking "Shanghai!" into a radio. It's supposed to air April 6 here so check your local listings if interested. (I was also told it's kinda bo-ring.) Good to hear your mom has been released, Michelle. The revival of your shed thread has been very enjoyable. Any special plans for it this year? There's a book coming out in April, I think called "Shed Style" which might be right up your alley. The pickling really "cools" off the orangey tones in the pine. I'm getting very Scandinavian vibes already. The stencil looks complicated, but I have no doubt Chelone's up to the task. Earlier in the week I dug into the cedar chest filled with fabric remnants, some over 20 years old, pulled out a few, grabbed a beloved shirt, pants, linen vest (probably 15 yrs old!) and took the lot to Nina, my fairy godmother seamstress. She made the first pair of pants for me about a half year ago, when there was nothing to be found in shops except those hig huggers, even for business wear, so I brought an old pair of pants I liked to her, the high-waisted, pleated, baggy kind, with some fabric I'd saved. She sews from the samples you bring, without dismantling the sample. Not that I'm boycotting Chinese seamstresses but enough with the hip huggers already and clothes that fall apart after a couple months of use. Cynthia, you're a good shill for Land's End, lol. I do need some tank tops. Thurs' job started at 7 a.m. at a doc's office, so I found myself alone in a dark, quiet office bldg. Can't use stairs due to amount of stuff I carry, which today also includes a speaker phone in a box. Punch 4th fl on elevator, doors close...and nothing happens. Hit all buttons. Nothing happens. Very hot and stuffy. Hit alarm button. Still nothing. Become flooded with regret over leaving cell phone in car. Just about to hit the red/fire dept button when doors soundlessly open on 3rd floor. Woman enters and sees my face, laughs and says yeah, these elevators are silent and slow. I mention this all later to an atty, who tells me he has no problems with claustrophobia but don't ever get him near the edge of a tall bldg because he will jump. I tell him this happens to me too on the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge, which may not be entirely true but I didn't want him to feel alone in his phobia confession. That's problably enough rambling about nothing much from me. I'm going to make like Bella and find a place to lounge with stuff to read. Temps have cooled into high 60s/70s, which is perfect. Rain possibly on Wed, so they say, but won't be much. Weekend greetings to all, and PM, take a nap!

Hi, all, - yes, we finally got some rain last nite here in my part of the world - thank goodness.... But unfortunately it appears the deer have invaded my front yards - and they've chomped just about everything they can - platycodon, lilies, you name it... I guess now I know what Chloe was having a fit at nite aobut (I thought she was just getting neurotic as soon as the bedroom lites went out, barking & running downstairs, & carrying on).... but she's not enough of a deterrent. Mary, have a nice time on your trip. Sounds like you and Kathy both have pleasant times ahead to count on. T- nice to hear from you - Im so sorry your little "chicks" are under the weather again - yikes, it makes me tired just to think of it. Sue -- Im sorry you're ill again -- the thought has occurred to me - do you think it could be shingles you're getting? (It popped into my head because a friend just got that -- I know a lot of times after some major stress on our bodies (i.e., operation, severe illness) those of us "eligible" for shingles come down with them... just a thought but you better get it checked out quickly. If it is, I think there are drugs that when taken early onset really make a difference to how severe the bout is. Sure hope you figure it out. That sure was disturbing w/ the Cops in your 'hood, uh? I've had it happen a time or two & it definitely ruins the sleep mode. Great to hear and see from you, Woody - I meant to remark on how lovely your shed has turned out - a little getaway in the woods look - really really charming. And it sounds like Charlotte is enjoying her stay w/ you just fine! Im soo tired -- but have to work late tonite & then go back to PA for some court/estate business on Monday - Im really hoping this will be the last weekend shot to heck for a while -- I can't tell you how horrible the inside and outside of the house is! And no time to shop -- getting really low on toilet paper at my house -- that shows how bad the shopping routine has gone to, LOL.... (McDonald's doesnt sell t.p. - what a shame, hehehe). This TGIF thread is a new thing for me. Maybe I wasn't here when it was done before. Saturday I have to get up at 5 am and drive to Salem to judge at a high school Speech & Debate tournament all day, then drive a carful of kids including my daughter, back to the school. DD is really into S&D so we have to be driver, judge and sometimes chaperone for several weekends a year, and I'm just "lucky" this was my turn. Sunday I haven't figured out. I will probably take a bike ride in the morning. The leaves are turning here, and it is pretty in our urban parks. There is a local park, rather grandly named "Mount" Tabor, that is covered with big trees, grassy fields, scenic slopes, and a road that spirals to the top of the "mountain" (shhh, it is really just a hill). My usual choice for a quick Sunday ride is to cycle over to Tabor, ride from the bottom to the top, zoom to the bottom, then repeat, over and over. This is called "hill laps" and is sort of like doing reps in a gym, but a beautiful green foresty gym with sweet fresh air. I will be done by mid-morning and then go home and do some cooking. If I feel like more riding and less cooking, I might cycle over to Forest Park which is the largest urban park in the country. This is miles and miles of dense northern rainforest, trails and dirt roads twisting among ferns and mossy old trees. This would be incredible mountain bike terrain, except that bikes are restricted to the dirt roads, but those are reasonably fun too. A friend lives by there, maybe he'll ride with me and then we can have a coffee at the best French bakery in town, St Honores. Or, there is a mountain biking area I haven't been to yet, a not-too-long drive from my house, and now that my van is finally running, I might take the mountain bike out there to check it out. This weekend will be one of the last nice ones in Portland, so mustn't let it go to waste. The next time I take a Sunday ride, it'll be with a rain jacket and neoprene gloves. I did one of those a couple weeks ago, when it rained two inches that weekend. Just a few laps on Tabor felt suspiciously like self-harm, so I high tailed it for home where it took an hour in a blanket by the fire to take the chill off. I'll raise my glass of ice water (still at work) with cheers to you all that you have a relaxing(?) Friday evening with whatever libation you desire.

Tomorrow I have a bridal shower for my niece to attend. It's a "Garden" shower - not "kitchen" - so that should be interesting. I've ordered some bulbs, but they won't be arriving until the third week in October. So, I'm going to buy a few bulbs, put them in a gift bag and add the John Scheeper's catalog as a wish book. That's the company that I ordered the bulbs from.

I need to make some bread and soup this weekend. Also, I'm making the bridal couple a quilt as their gift from me, so plenty of work still left to do on that.

I was going shopping for FOOD after work. Discovered that the electric door locks would not work. Fooled around with the fuse box, nothing helped. Called the dealer. Was quoted $350.00 to fix.

Googled. Apparently a common issue with the car's central computer software fault. To fix, disconnect and reconnect battery.

Fixed!!! 10 minutes and saved $350 plus half a dayÃ¢ÂÂs going to the dealer. :-) :-) :-)

To share with you also:

The Electric window was not working. Dealer wanted $500.00 to replace the motor. Googled.

Ã¢ÂÂSlam the door hard, twice.Ã¢ÂÂ So I slam it once, didnÃ¢ÂÂt work. Slammed it once more and it worked. It has been over a year, still working.

One more:

When the light on the dashboard goes on Ã¢ÂÂFix engine soonÃ¢ÂÂ, before you go to the dealer, buy a scanner ($20.00). You can find out what the problem is and donÃ¢ÂÂt let the service dealer fool you.

DC, That is not only cool but helpful! Thank you and I'm glad that you TGIF your issues.

Went to DGD's school today to see her receive an award; she was named the "Rock Star" of the 1st grade.

Making stir fry for dinner and will be raising a glass of iced tea.

Only 5 games this weekend and they are in town (versus 8 across the state last weekend) so I feel it's light duty.

dcarch, what kind of vehicle because I can use tips like this if it applies to mine! I paid the $500+ for the electric window motor! :( I really miss mechanical cars.... basically every problem I have now boils down to the computer/electrical system malfunctioning!!!!! My last problem was when the shop accidentally voided my remote key system!!! What a PITA.

Please explain what the TGIF thread is! At the moment my glass is empty. :p

Hi gang. I'm also at the "every day is the same as the other" stage as a retiree, although weekends are livelier with everyone home. I try to shop during the week and stay at home on th weekend.

I finished PT for my shoulder on Wednesday but it still hurts. Went back to the doc today and he said I have full range of motion. Oh well.

After the doc I went to Whole Foods and bought a $6 salad that I never ate. I ate the cookies for lunch instead.

Then I went to the library and picked a book called The World's Strongest Librarian, about a guy with Tourette's. I chatted with my librarian for awhile. She's also a friend.

The off to Produce Junction to buy mums for the planters in front of the library. They needed some fall decor.

Them home and I called the car dealer to see the state of my car warranty because my tires are getting premature dry rot. Sigh. Maybe I will kick them twice!

After the library closed at five I scooted over and planted all nine mums in the planters and waved at friends as they drove by.

Home to water my plants and here I am. Now I have a stomachache, I can[t figure out why. I will toast you with my glass of water. Maybe I'll curl up with my book now.

And ---- I am so looking forward to the season finale of Breaking Bad on Sunday!

FOAS, cool that your kiddo wants to play the cello! My best friend growing up also played the cello.

Wish I had grandkids to play with. Oh well.

Party music, The reason I didn't mention my car model is because the thinking works with all cars. Just Google your problem and you car model, and you may find easy or cheap fixes.

Remote key for instance, for my car, the dealer wanted a couple hundred dollars for an extra one. I Googled, and found out that you can buy cheap blanks on eBay and follow some steps and program the key yourself.

On Monday night, I dreamed of eating macarons so Tuesday morning, spouse and I hopped on the bus to NYC and headed straight to a macaron shop I like. Then we roamed around Eataly for a while so I did have a bit of food adventuring this week.

Our valley is hopping with all types of events and festivals this weekend. Remember when I hosted a dinner party for the season premier of Mad Men? One of the guests is preparing a Breaking Bad finale dinner on Sunday and I can't wait to see what menu he'll come up with for it.

The weather was ideal this week for doing winterizing tasks both indoors and outdoors.

I'll toast to a wonderful weekend for all of you with my Tervis tumbler of iced tea, or as DH calls it, tea-flavored water.

Yay! Nice to see a TGIF, PartyMusic, TGIF was a regular thread for quite awhile...a thread for posting why you're glad it's Friday, plans for the weekend, etc.

It's my day off...laundry, canning chili sauce and cleaning out the garden. We got a tiny bit of frost last night, so I picked beans, basil and the last of the little zucchinis 'just in case'. Also got a good bunch of tomatoes out of the hoop houses. Hard to believe it's almost October and my garden hasn't frozen.

Tomorrow is our Oktoberfest and the library (meaning me) is in charge of the scarecrow contest. It's going to rain...looking forward to warming up at the wine bar after.

Sunday is salsa day.

I'll clink with my cup of tea, it's been a crazy week here. We've been remodeling the bathroom, the last room to be done in this house, then we clean the garage and basement and put it on the market. Hooray, one more step in my journey out to the farm! So, we've been working on replacing the sink and vanity, which caused us to have to work on the plumbing, which caused us to have to work on the hot water heater. Yeah, you all know the drill, I think, so FOAS, I empathize with you on that kitchen.

I've been canning applesauce and apple butter and apple pie filling and spiced apples. Oh, and a batch of hot chow chow for Elery.

My stepdaughter is getting married next weekend and I'm baking the cake, which is really a 72 cupcake tower with 50 cake pops on the side and one two layer topper, gluten free, topped with a "poofy bow" of fondant. So, I've been busy making ribbon loops and learning about Tylose powder.

We're pressing cider on Sunday, so tomorrow I'm baking bread and making donuts for a picnic lunch. We have bushels of apples everywhere from the trees on the farm, friends' trees, neighbors' trees. It was a big apple year this year in Michigan and I have Red Delicious, Wolf River, MacIntosh, Gala, and some unknown types, LOL. I didn't spray anything so some were very nice and some were small, had surface blemishes or were misshapen, those will go into the press.

The Monkey Princess shot her first deer, Michigan has a two day Youth Hunt and since she's 9, she's old enough. Her Dad got her a .243 of her very own and she's a darned good shot, better than me for sure! So this weekend will also include some venison jerky and sausage, I think. Oh, and she also got elected to Student Council, so she's well rounded. (grin)

TGIF, no one told me how busy retirement was going to be...

Little late to the TGIF party but that's becasue I was TGIF'ing!

Diane so nice to see you back and thanks for starting the thread. Funnily enough I made your Palmiers last weekend and thought of you.

Yesterday we met some cottage friends and played 18 holes of golf and then back to one of the cottages for the last big BBQ of the season.

Today I'm doing down roasted Red Peppers and starting on salsa which I will likely finish tomorrow along with another batch of chile sauce.

Tonight we are meeting friends for dinner at a local restaurant. A very simple little country restaurant but absolutely delicious food. It's a belated Birthday dinner for Clive and I in celebration of that unspeakable birthday we just celebrated

The weather here is absolutely gorgeous. I may pack in the salsa and go for an afternoon boat ride...not many left.

Sounds like great fall plans everyone! Cider and soup and bread and chili and football and school activities - heaven!

I got home from Austin last night, I was down there for a week working with the inside sales team. Only 1 particularly memorable eating experience - there is a Peruvian food truck called Llama's Peruvian Creole where I had a Pork Belly Sanguche and my dining friend had the Lomo Saltado. Mine was good, his was better. Of course we did have cocktails at CU29 where the bartender is truly a craftsman. I told the bartender that I was a Manhattan fan and he created one just for me. He made it with Makers Mark, orange and chocolate bitters, a rinse of Chartreuse and a singed orange peel. Sublime! Dining companion had a concoction of Bombay Sapphire, Cherry Herring, chartreuse and a singed rosemary branch. Very tasty also. I will definitely be burning stuff to put in cocktails, especially the rosemary. It added a really yummy herbaceous favor to his cocktail.

Back to reality at home, I am looking forward to some home cooking and baking. Seems the bananas I bought for the boys before I left were ignored, they are perfect for making Nancy's banana bread and since the temps are 20 - 30 degrees cooler than Austin I think soup will be in the plans as well.

IT is definitely fun to travel, but better to come home!

TGIF a day late! Thanks to Diane for reviving a fun thread! I'm so happy to see an old friend back on the CF ! How's Doc doing?

Busy social weekend for us-- Last night we dined at a new restaurant opened by the family of one of LA's venerable restaurant families. All four meals were excellent! My choice of New Zealand salmon with a grainy mustard sauce served on a bed of celeriac puree and the grilled artichoke starter were fantastic! The cheesecake we shared was ultra light and fluffy, truly a great meal!
Then we raced over to see Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons in concert. The theater was sold out and jammed, we were far from the stage in the nosebleed section, but what a concert! He was on stage nonstop for one hour and fifty five minutes! Did I mention that he's 79? !!!

Today brings my kitchen faucet woes to a head, finally deciding which brand to order and all of the accompanying accessories! Lots of chores to be handled and more fun on Sunday.
I'm off grandparent duty for the weekend, my grands are enjoying themselves elsewhere.
Hoping to fit in a bit of time at the gym and then catching up on my tv shows!

First time poster on these threads but read them all the time. Annie, I feel your pain! Hubby retired 9/1 of last year, we put our old home on the market 10/4, moved and arrived at our new home the night before Thanksgiving (dinner last Turkey day was hot dogs and mac&cheese). We knew that we were going to be downsizing drastically when we were house hunting down here so the fixing, tossing, donating, going thru everything, yard sales, getting the house ready for listing, packing and dealing with the moving company almost did us in.

Dinner last night (Friday) was ribeyes, twiced baked potatoes and brussel sprouts with garlic and bacon, roasted in butter and a little bacon grease. The best part was that hubby did all the cooking, which is very unusual (but much appreciated). Ate in the living room while watching the latest Star Trek movie that is now on DVD.

Tonight we're having a very simple dinner. With my new found skills with making a good meatloaf, we're having meatloaf sandwiches, which we both prefer over a meatloaf dinner. Meatloaf is in the oven right now.

Hubby had wanted to go out in the boat today but I nixed that idea as I'm feeling really lazy today. Mainly because the lake is always crowded with out of towners during the weekends. Most of whom think drinking and boating are one and the same. So we're going out tomorrow as most of the boaters will have left or will be working. A late lunch or early dinner will be at a restaurant that faces the London Bridge after we get back.

Haven't been out on the lake since August when we had a large almost two week long get-together with very dear friends and family. When we moved here we were told that there were a few months when it's actually too hot to be boating (unless you spend all of your time IN the water instead of on it) and that even swimming pools often get too hot to be enjoyable during the heat. We scoffed....but found out how true that was. Went thru our first monsoon season here and boy was that interesting. Now that the temps have cooled off somewhat we want to take advantage of it.

Hope everyone had a terrific weekend. Lifting my mug of cold coffee in toast to everyone.

I too missed this thread but had a fun weekend when my BFF from college came for a visit. Her birthday Tuesday, and two other friends' birthdays this weekend proved the perfect excuse for a party.

We had 12 people join us for a Saturday dinner of pulled pork, vegetarian chili, grilled jalapeno poppers, guacamole, corn bread, coleslaw and birthday cake. Margaritas and DH's home brews started the evening and we enjoyed lots of great laughs and good company.

Best wished to all of us for family, friends and great food next weekend!

I was not paying attention, did I just hear on radio that there was some kind of a fire near the London Bridge?

Never mind, I think it was this I just heard about the London Bridge, a coincidence nevertheless:

"Duck Boat passengers jump into the Thames after amphibious craft sets on fire and starts sinking near the Houses of Parliament"

Chuckling here, dcarch. Nope, we live in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where the 'other' London Bridge is.

Suddenly, Monday seems so far from Friday...

Sorry I missed TGIF. Although, I never contributed to this thread in the past, I'm excited to see it being resurrected. Thank you Diane!

AnnieB, I must congratulate Makayla again for bagging her first deer at the age of 9.

I seem to recall being taught about firearms, at about the same age as Makayla. A dear cousin, who was a skilled markswoman, actually showed me how to load and fire a rifle. Long story short, I missed my target and killed a tree. I had no idea how powerful a firearm could be. What a rush!

It was an eye-opening experience, to say the least. It was also the day I learned that I couldn't shoot an elephant in the a$$, with a bazooka, at close range.
