Lordy-- did 2013 just speed by or is it me getting older ?

We are having an old fashion Winter here in the Fingerlakes-- have had to plow 3 xs already & while groc shopping yesterday I actually had on long undies, gloves , boots & a hat-- was -6 this morning .

Was going to spend tomorrow getting New Year food gifts out to 5 close friends & then Sunday getting lights etc out of the yard-- think we'll wait 'til it's a bit warmer--these old joints need to be curled up in front of the wood stove with a good book clinking with a Irish coffee or Hot Toddy instead.

TGIF, all. Diane, yes 2013 sped by (or it's me getting older. ha).

We aren't having much of a winter so far. A few inches of snow, a little rain and lots of ice. It's like waiting for the other shoe to drop....I know it's coming.

It's my day off. Laundry, clean the kitchen, grind some popcorn for cornbread...nice, mundane chores after the holiday. It's sunny out and later we'll strap on the ice cleats and hike to the mailbox. I have a pot of ham and bean soup going, made with the last of the mayacoba beans that Annie sent last winter. Beans and cornbread for dinner.

Tomorrow will be spent fighting cranky computers. Not sure about Sunday. It just might be a repeat of New Years day...total slugdom.

Clinking later with a nice spiked hot cider. Happy New Year everyone.

Setting winter fashion excellence here as well. Hubby and I bundled up yesterday morning (3-degrees F - wind chill -10) and got out at 3:50 a.m. to clear our drive and our neighbor's. They cleared our drive just before Christmas after a 12-inch snow, while we were in Tennessee for Christmas. We only had 2-1/2-inches yesterday, so it will take several more snow storms before we get the 12-inches paid back ;-). More snow coming tomorrow, so I went out this morning and filled the car with gas and bought a few groceries because the deep-freeze is setting in for the next few days.

I did squeeze in a little baking. I took a great recipe I found on-line for Gingerbread Bundt Cake with Lemon Glaze (low-carb and gluten-free) and cut it in half and baked it in a fluted cupcake pan for 12 individual servings. While it was in the oven I also baked a recipe of granola.

Something yummy for our tummy, no matter what the weather decides to deliver this weekend.

Then playing possum is real, not a myth! She sure looked dead in that picture. Was she trapped in the recycle bin or did you just startle her? I think I remember you finding one of her ancestors a few years ago in the same bin, although I don't remember it playing possum. I'm trying to imagine what it would be like to climb over a bunch of huge empty bottles and jars and cans - not the easiest ladder. Glad she's OK, if a bit histrionic. Claire

My first picture! We have survey markers telling the excavator where to dig. Excavators were supposed to be moving their equipment today, but no sign of them yet. The surveyor was supposed to be done in 2-3 days. So I said "go" on Thursday, they had questions, I confirmed they had everything on Friday, and I figured Wed at the latest. On Wednesday, I get an email from the survey company. "Did you want us to do this?" Uh, yeah! I thought it was done by now! I told them the excavators were coming today, so they made it a rush job and got it done yesterday. I went by the lot today to take some pictures. I also needed shots of the neighbour's "ready to fall down even before we start digging" fence. Just in case we get accused of damaging it. I'm driving up the alley, and a new house several doors down is having some landscaping done, and for some reason the guy has his equipment spread out in the alley. So there's not much room to get through, and there's a van coming the other way. We each take turns pulling over so the other can get through. He waves thank-you and goes on his way. As he's passing me, I realize it's BIL's friend who is going to be helping on the build. He's checking out the lot like I am, and didn't even recognize me. :P Also, while out running errands, I noticed a new bathroom showroom. It's a new location of a company I've already got quotes from. The quotes were ridiculous, like, over MSRP on every single thing. So, I'm not buying from them. But a big new showroom might give me a chance to pick out some things. Not a single item had ANY information. No price, no model number, and in some cases, not even a brand name. I asked if this is just a symptom of being new, they haven't put up the info cards yet? "Oh, no, the showroom designers decided that the info cards made the display look too busy, so we don't have any." Really? I think the fact that you have 22 shower heads in a 4'x4' square area makes it look busy. Info cards would make it USEFUL. Oh, well. I don't have to waste my time ever going in there again. It's ridiculous, this isn't some hoity-toity designer brand bathroom boutique. They've got a reputation for being a big supplier of basic plumbing supplies. Maybe they're trying to become the hoity-toity types? I think the ensuite tile is picked. I'll probably get a lighter version of the one I had originally wanted. It's also discontinued, but there's lots of stock as of yesterday. DH is going on his annual mountain bike vacation tomorrow, taking my car for 10 days because it's better on gas. That means I'll be driving his big 'ole beast of a truck, so I'll go get the tile then. If I miss it again, there are a few other options that are just as nice and only slightly more expensive. So no need to panic. As for windows, the cheaper guy's products are much nicer. But, he's still waiting on his 3rd party certification that allows him to sell his window with a sticker. If we have windows without the sticker, we won't pass the city inspection. So, we're giving him another week to find out when that's coming. I am also investigating getting a Direct Buy membership. They also sell windows. So if they can get the ones we want, at a price that makes the membership fee worthwhile, then that's another possibility. Has anyone else looked into getting a Direct Buy membership for their build? Did you find it was worth it? SIL's mother has one, and she swears by it. But she buys a lot of stuff for her 3 daughters and their families. My cousin built his house a few years ago and got the membership. But I'm not sure he calculated the cost of the membership into his "savings". I mean, it costs $5000 or $6000, depending on who you ask. So you have to save at least that much to break even. And a lot of people are probably "saving" that much only because they're buying stuff they wouldn't otherwise buy. For example, you could get a $800 dishwasher and be very happy with it. But you go to DB, and they can get you the $2000 dishwasher for $1200. So you "save" $800. But you've still spent $400 more than you would have without the DB membership. Speaking of windows, I realized that we had quoted the super insulated, fancy opening, custom coloured windows on the garage. That's a waste of money. The garage isn't heated, so single pane is fine. We want them to open, but sliders is good enough. And the colour doesn't matter. So I got a quote from Costco for 3 basic windows. I almost choked when I got it. It's almost as much as the fancy windows that were quoted with the house. I also asked for door pricing, since I don't like what the window guys are offering. And they've spec'd out 1980s Home Depot style doors at several thousand dollars each.

Pea soup and ham sounds good, but I've been eating a lot of soup lately, as I have been under the weather since Wednesday of last week, which is why I did not post under TGIF last week. I'm much better now, probably at 95%, but I will still take it easy this week-end. It's gotten cool here (mid 60s) and I think we may have had rain last night, which might happen again this week-end, which would be wonderful. If I'm up to it, I will make tamales. I found corn husks at Sprout's, but they cost $5, which I found to be expensive. Last Saturday (when I should have stayed home), we went to what I thought was a Von's close to our house, but it is now a dollar (or 99 cent) store, and I guess corn husks are too expensive for them to carry! Before that we went to a grocery/liquor store that is even closer to our house, and its doors had been chained, as it is going through a change of ownership. The large recycling center in its parking lot was still open, however, but that was all that was going on. Kevin said that he had seen people who collect bottles and cans get vouchers for what they had collected and then used those vouchers to buy lottery tickets! I think they should have given them food stamps instead. There are too many dollar stores now, I think. The fruit and vegetable market that we used to go to is also now a dollar store. I will say that the dollar store that used to be a Von's is much cleaner than the Von's was, and I did not shop at the Von's because it was not very nice. It would be nice if a dollar store would reopen as a vegetable market. Maybe I'll make pizzas this week-end and put some of my Roma tomatoes on them. I've been mostly avoiding cheese while I was sick, as I think it makes congestion worse. I think I'll be fully recovered by tomorrow. I want to make something besides soup. I did make some very good cabbage soup while I was sick, and it was quick and easy and much better than I expected, although it did not have much of a cabbage flavor. I had Kimchee flavored soup yesterday. I turn the TV off whenever anything Superbowl comes on - it's just a lot of annoying noise as far as I'm concerned. I just got through looking at "warmest gloves" trying to finally find something. I think I have. They might be good for next year, but won't be here in time for this next few days. This is surely a case of better late than never. I was thinking of marathon baking tomorrow to A) stay inside and B) keep the house warm. Happy Friday to everyone~

I'm still recovering from New Year's Day open house, however I'm looking forward to spending one on one time with our older grandson and probably both of them tonight. Our weather is gorgeous, the garden reno is in full swing. If those pesky racoons would stop pulling up the sod, I'd be a happy camper!
Tomorrow eve hoping to catch at least one movie with friends. I also promised a bff that I'd help shop tomorrow for a mother of the bride dress.
Back to work on Monday....sigh! Clinking now with a glass of water!

I don't think I've cooked all week. Been staring at Donna's Sun Dried Tomato Cream recipe and dreaming of it over pasta with Shrimp and Asparagus. But that's as far as I've gotten. Asparagus is probably ready to be tossed anyway. *sigh*
I'm having one of those weeks, every single person on the planet, who is breathing, is getting on my last nerve. I hope this isn't a premonition of my whole new year. I'm sure ready to get this week behind me.

I felt that 2013 would never end - it was not a great year as far as I was concerned - especially December.

Kevin and I will finish our back yard project this week-end - all we have to do is replace the gravel in the walkway that we just built. When I get more organized, I will hire an electrician to electrify the back yard so that we will not have to use extension cords. I want to put a flood light on the fountain and get outlets to other parts of the yard. We have lights in the pergola that we've been using, since we've been having pleasant temperatures in the evenings. I also want to do some renovation in my bathroom, but that will require moving a lot of stuff in my bedroom, in order to access the plumbing through one of my closets.

It's supposed to be in the mid 70s this week-end again, and so maybe we'll grill something outside. We have to go back to Santa Monica to get the gravel I want, and so maybe we'll go back to the SM Seafood Market. It was not crowded last week-end and was easy to park. I might also try to go to Bay City Deli to get some 6 in 1 tomatoes - otherwise, I will have to order them on line. Parking is usually a problem at the deli, although we've also gotten lucky most times we've gone there.

Fortunately, I do not have raccoons like Ellen does, possibly because all the neighbors seem to have dogs, and the one next door has a Great Dane, which seems to keep even the squirrels away!

Diane, we are NOT getting older. Nope, we're not. 2013 sure flew, though.

Lars, I'm sorry December was so difficult for you, I hope January is much better, and all of 2014. I'm sending you hugs, and some to Kevin too.

Grainlady, here I have the world's best neighbor. He has a snowblower on his lawn tractor and always clears the driveway. In return I bake him bread. It's a great deal for me!

Katie, beans and cornbrad sound really good, I need to get some more of those mayacoba beans, I like them a lot.

Rob, you are definitely way late on the gloves. My problem is that I can't seem to do anything with gloves on, so whether it's pumping gas or shoveling hay, I end up pulling the gloves off anyway.

Ellen, enjoy those grandkids. I have the Princess and Bud here for the night, so they baked cookies with Elery and we'll have Nutella Crepes for breakfast.

Here I finally got garlic into the dehydrator, it was starting to sprout in the cellar. I had planned to keep some for seed garlic but since I put the house up for sale in October and my nephew was still living at the farm, I didn't know where the heck to plant it. So, all that heirloom garlic that Katie sent me is now dried garlic. (sigh) Maybe next year.

Tomorrow we'll take the kids home and feed the stock and fill tanks. It was a high of 10F here today and about -3 when I went to the farm. It'll be in the single digits to below zero until the middle of next week and then warm up, but we have "dangerous wind chill" alerts going from Sunday until Tuesday. I hope the tank heater holds out...

Angelaid, sometimes it's just like that. Take a deep breath, it'll be better.
