Does it make sense for me to buy some appliances now?

I'm planning to put the Kenmore elite wall ovens in my new kitchen, but we won't be ready to install them for another 3 months. Sears is having a nice sale right now - should I get them today? I don't have a basement. Or really even a house. I'm living in a rental that has a secure garage, and most of my stuff is in boxes in the LR. I guess I can add a couple of ovens to that, LOL!

As Antss says, Sears does have frequent sales. And just remember that the clock starts ticking on the appliances' warranty upon delivery, not upon installation. So you will lose 3 months of warranty. If Sears will agree to give you the sale price now, and hold your appliances for you in their warehouse, that would be great. But I'm not sure they'll do that. There are risks to storing your appliances at your home - workmen theft, boxes getting wet, boxes getting shoved around, or something falling into/onto them, and the like.

Wow, Yardvaark could have written that last paragraph about me ... and probably a good many other gardeners on this site and off. There are some great deals to be found this time of year, and this is a perfect time for planting: the ground is till warm enough to encourage root growth, but the sun's heat and intensity are waning, placing less stress on the plant. If ... no, when ... I am forced to overwinter winter-hardy woody plants or herbaceous perennials in containers, in late fall I will usually sink the containers into a trench, backfill loosely, then cover the soil with shredded leaf mulch. Sometimes some late season event interferes with that procedure (like an oil spill in the koi pond, or Superstorm Sandy) and plants have overwintered in pots above ground here in my zone 7 garden with no adverse effects. I at least try to put them in a sheltered location and pile up some leaves (or even unshredded ones) around the pot for insulation. The real issue is that the moisture level and especially the temperature level in the container "soil" will be much less stable than in the ground. Think of mild, sunny winter days, with the sun beating on those dark-colored nursery pots, followed by freezing nights. Anything you can do to minimize those fluctuations will lessen the stress on any plants you cannot plant this fall. Bottom line: Planting right away would be best, as overwintering in containers can be done but does involve some risk - you will have to make that decision.

I will keep those Accords - my goal is 150,000 miles on each and then I will decide to either do major rebulding on them or buy a new Honda, Toyota, or Nissan. My 98 Accord 4 cyl gets 31 to 33 MPG, the 99 6 cyl gets around 25 hwy. All we do is change oil & tires when needed - they are low maintenance cars except for the darn timing belts which really tick me off - that is my only complaint about the Hondas. I reran my spreadsheet - factored in the 50 MPG on the Hybrid Civic and 10 bucks per gallon (and assuming my electric cost stays constant - which it won't) then the costs are comparable. But then if I double my current electric rate to 20 cents per kWh, the Civic wins again! My guess is that the Lion batteries will only last 5 years at best. So if you add in another 9 grand for a replacement battery over the car life (I keep cars until wheels fall off) then the business case for the Volt just doesn't close - even with a 7500 tax credit. I really want to buy an American designed, fuel efficient, 21st century car. I used to be a proud GM owner (I loved my Olds Delta 88) but have not had one since the early 80's. But I will not buy a Big 3 product unless it makes good financial sense, is rock solid reliable, and has an execellent safety rating - which probably means never. Looks like I need to write my senators and congressman again because I am sure they are clueless on this. The Volt is just a smoke screen. If that is the car that GM is basing its entire future on - it is doomed.

In your situation, I like the idea of setting aside a healthy down payment into a special account, now, then adding the price of the monthly payment on a new one, for at least six months, better a year ... (possibly even two?). Then taking the kitty to buy, rather than a new one, a quality vehicle that's a year or two (possibly three?) old. Do you folks know some mechanics? Talk to them, to find out some things that you can check for, to weed out some prospects. Also get an idea of who might be willing to check out some candidates for you, then take some to them to check. If one listens to the motor,and takes one quick look, then tells you to get that piece of crap out of there - give him/her 10 bucks. If s/he checks another out a bit, then turns it down - give him/her 20 bucks. If the mechanic checks one out quite carefully and you give that person $40.00 ... ... and you get a really good vehicle after having paid less than $200.00 ... ... and you save one trip to the garage - you're money ahead! For me? I haven't bought a new vehicle for over 35 years. Figure to buy one 5 - 10 years old for under $5,000. (haven't paid close to that, for several years). Recent Mazda was almost 20 years old, $2,500.00 before tax, licence transfer, drove it 5 years. Current '05 Chev. was bought last summer, $3,800.00 or so, including taxes, licence, paid in cash ... as I'm 84, it may well be my last vehicle. You have some funding set aside for emergency/ies, kids' education, your retirement, etc., do I assume? If you don't boss your bucks ... there's a good possibility that'll they'll boss you. And often if you don't boss them in the short term ... their bossing will likely hit you, after a while. ole joyful

WHAM! Did that work? Okay, remodeling anything, let alone a whole house renovation is an ongoing process, not a lump thing. At least for most of us. So you start with the structural, like the wiring, and work your way out. Are you asking about tiling the kitchen or the bathroom? What panels? You mean wood panels? Where? Yes, you should "clean like a big girl," but you don't need to pay for surfaces that make it harder to clean :) And whatever you get, it should be something that looks good to you and your DH as well as respecting the style of the house. Is that enough sense?

Ditto.

Risks and risks. I can guarantee you that when you come to install these things now in boxes in your LR, you will be hit with one or two surprises, and your warranty is ticking away. Just leave the advertised great deals alone. There will be more of them. Even if you had a spare house or two, you wouldn't want to have these on hand beforehand. It if were an extreme specialty item, like imported from Korea, you could have it paid for and undelivered.

I am interested in this question, too. So what should the lead time be in ordering appliances? I want the Samsung FD CD fridge and Best Buy is selling it for $2460. as opposed to the normal price of $2899. Id like to get it now...my cabinets are due to arrive Jan. 28th.

I just posted something on the kitchen site that asks about lead time. I too am trying to play the "when's the right time" game. If my range takes 8 weeks as they have said, then I need to order within 6 weeks, but I don't want to be stuck with nowhere to put it in if it arrives early, and I don't want to be waiting around for it and delay my project because I didn't order in time!

It's a tough call, you need to design the kitchen based on the appliances you plan to use, but your kitchen design also might dictate which appliances you choose.

Changing your mind can be VERY costly. I recommend waiting until the last minute to order appliances so you have ample time to do research think though your design.

A kitchen remodel is so expensive I wouldn't worry about trying to save a few hundred dollars if it might cause you to compromise your design.

Some appliances can take several weeks to get, others might be in stock locally, or just a weeks truck ride away.

In my case the Bluestar range top took several weeks, and I'm glad I ordered it so early.

I bought a floor model refrigerator over two months ago. They were able to hold on to it for me until I was ready to install it 2 weeks ago.

The Electrolux ovens were readily available in the SoCal warehouse.
