What's For Dinner - #290

Annie, you must love when Elery comes home. Nice to have some one there that loves good food and loves to cook as much as you do. Everything looks delicious. I love the green pasta.

Woodie, Kari, the movie was excellent. I can see why it has been nominated and why Brad Pitt has been too. BUT, by the end of the movie I was feeling very sad and depressed. Not exactly the way I like to feel when I leave a movie.

Marigene, YOu almost ended What's For Dinner - #289 the way you started it with a breaded pork chop. I'm working today and trying to think ahead to dinner. You have me wanting breaded pork.

Kari, nice to see you back posting. And Happy Birthday.

Last night we had slow roasted lamb shanks with cannellini beans.

Sharon, the pommes frittes look wonderful and have me drooling. And blue crabs to crack and make a mess iwth are almost too good to be true.

To catch up, Friday I had Dad place a stuffed veal breast in the oven at 5 as I had my hair done. Not too bad for pre-stuffed from the grocer. Saturday was a total pig out, as we went to the Polish buffet. Duck, pork roast, ham beef, seasoned meat patties, sausage, pirogie, dumplings, blintzes, herring, even white asparagus and it went on. Yeah, I hurt afterword.

Sunday was giambotta of chicken and sausage with home canned peppers and potatoes. Monday was leftover veal breast. I guess I have to cook tomorrow.

    Inspire me please!

Annie, I love the pics of everyone in their cooking gear! how cute! and your apple bars look especially good.

Grace, I've never mad a souffle - yours looks beautiful.

Sharon, I'll have that pasta, but I'd never fight Wolf for jellied pork...:-)

kathleen, that tart is gorgeous! How do you make the top like that?

Dixie, you summery supper sounds perfect. It's 5 degrees here.ugh.

peppi, I copied your chicken and dumplings recipe last year, and made it again at Will's request - the other night. HE love dumplings. Thanks for a great recipe. I left out the parsnips - figured he wouldn't like them and since he will be eating most of it...

Stihl MS 290 spur vs rim sprocket

    Q

    Comments (7)
Hi all I am going to try cutting the same wood I was before some large poplars and see how the speed is affected by the 7 tooth rim. One reason that I switched was the bar was bent so I got a new bar and chain off ebay for 25.00 bucks delivered by airmail then I found a rim sprocket on there and got that so now all is new on the saw. Hopefully it will warm up a bit so I can cut some later in the week I will post the results. Can one tooth make that much difference to chain speed and torque. My owners manual only mentions 7 tooth sprockets but the saw came from the dealer brand new with the 8 tooth spur on it. regards rod s

    Stihl MS290 - Impulse line

    Q

    Comments (2)
So is there no seal in the crank case that may cause this rough running issue? I am in doubt that the impulse line is cracked or leaking and my saw has never acted like this before. And had a slow death over the course of about 20 minutes. Usually runs strong after just a couple pulls on the cord now it just sputters (after multiple pulls) and dies even after the carb rebuild and new fuel line. The exhaust side of the piston is a little rough but doesn't look to bad. Any other ideas?

    Stihl MS 290 No Spark

    Q

    Comments (5)
If it fires on ether (which I'm not sure I would be doing in a 2 stroke) then I would look at the carb. I might also pull the muffler and see if there is any scoring on the piston (low compression). Did the saw set for along while with bad gas in it? If so then again I would say carb. Always replace the in tank fuel filter when you do the carb, I've heard it too can become clogged with varnished fuel. Check the fuel line in the tank, if it's old enough it can colapse causing fuel starviation. I would also give it the poor man's compression check. Lift the saw by the start handle. If the engine makes enough compression it will usually lift the saw off the ground. If you have low compression it will not lift the saw off the ground. Check out You Tube for vids.

Kawasaki FC290V 14HP hard start when hot

    Q

    Comments (4)
***" I got it to start but it seemed like it was flooded."*** The operative word here is "flooded". So lets discuss "flooded". When the engine is hot and does not want to restart.......Do you see any BLACK SMOKE out of the exhaust as the engine regains operation??? Or are you seeing "no smoke" in the exhaust, but the engine sort of "stumbles and falters" as it gathers RPM???? Black smoke out the exhaust, after an rather long period of cranking, is the keynote symptom of a hot, flooded engine. A rather long period of cranking that produces no smoke when the engine finally gathers RPM could be a symptom of "vapor lock" in the fuel lines and fuel pump. One way to determine if vapor lock is the culprit is to pour about a quart of cold water on the fuel pump, fuel lines, and carburetor before you try starting it when hot. Keep the water away from the spark plugs or you could "ground them out" (which would render the test "useless"). ...................................... In regard to ***"a small solenoid at the bottom. I can hear it click when I turn on the key. I am not sure what it is supposed to do."*** That is the fuel cutoff solenoid valve. Its purpose is to prevent "afterfire" (sometimes erroneously called "backfire") out the exhaust during engine shutdown. By design intent, you should turn off the "ignition switch" while the engine is turning about "medium RPM' when shutting down engines that feature a "fuel solenoid". This action does not actually stop the "ignition sparking" of the plugs. Instead, it interrupts the 12 volt current to the fuel solenoid. This causes the solenoid valve to close, shutting off the fuel to the carburetor MAIN JET. With the MAIN JET deprived of fuel, the engine begins to lose RPM, but the ignition system continues to "fire", consuming the last dregs of fuel in the engine AND purging the exhaust and muffler of any unburned fuel or hot combustible gasses (remember, the throttle is still open, so the intake is gulping air, but only air....no fuel). This prevents the loud "BANG" out of the muffler, (so annoying to the neighbors) and makes the machine an EPA Poster Child by venting no unburned fuel vapors to the environment (unlike stopping a hot engine by "killing the spark", as once was the norm).

Dixie, I thought you bought them like that and you were going to prepare them somehow! LOL
You can tell, I don't eat them...I do see people all the time crabbing though! And I know you have to have a lot of them to fill you up, so I am told!! :)

Stacy, it is a lattice tool..a few of us got it when we made the caged pears last year...Monique showed us..

And your chicken and dumplings look heavenly!

Peppi, that sounds like a great buffet that you went to.

Stacy great looking chicken and dumplings.

Kathleen eating blue crabs is a long process unless you mortgage your house and buy the jumbos! LOL! We love them. We all had them along w/the shrimp, etc. and watched the Super Bowl. It's a great time for everyone to sit around at a large table and eat and have fun for hours.

Decided to make Pot Roast tonight.

Stacey, that chicken and dumpling is to so good and I am glad that Will likes it. Try the parsnips, he may like them. I need to make this soon.

Dixie, it was. My scale showed it by Monday morning. Oink.

Tonights dinners was simple. I had some leftover spaetzle and some cubed ham, so I chopped some onion and grated some Swiss cheese and tossed it all into a pan with butter and EVOO. Heat through and a moment under the broiler and we were done. No veggie as we just didn;t feel like it. Pure comfort for us Germans. I am glad that lunch was a salad with low fat dressing.

    Tomorrow is meatloaf.

    Great photos Shaun.

Dinner tonight was Steak and Frites.

Actually it was a small prime rib just big enough for two thick slices grilled and served with homemade fries with Garlic Parmesan Aioli.

    last modified: 11 years ago

Garlic parmesan Aioli? Ann, you'd make Ashley ecstatic, she never wants catsup with fries, she either eats them dipped in ranch dressing or in mayonnaise. She'd love yours.

RR, we had so much fun, I want to do it again!

OK, now I want Dixie's crabs, Kathleen's pear tart, some of Dixie's pot roast, Ann's fries, Shaun's soup, Stacy's chicken and dumplings and SharonCB's weather. LOL Can you tell it was 20 below zero here and that it's nearly lunch time?

Dinner last night was the rest of that pint of collard greens, the leftover pork loin from the ginger challenge and an apple. Who knows what tonight will bring, but Elery will be here Friday night and I'm planning to roast a big pan of veggies and make somethng with whole wheat pasta.

I haven't posted here since early December before I went into the hospital. As always your meals look wonderful.

Tonight Michael made a delicious chicken piccata with artichoke hearts added to it. He served over it curly noodles with steamed green beans and a roasted vegetable foccacia on the side. All the meals here have been good. I have been able to help some by sitting at the counter and cutting up ingredients but I think it will be a while before I can stand long enough to cook and now I can't carry foods from the fridge without losing my balance.

Tonight my dh took one look at dinner and decided he was going to take a picture of it for me to post. So I'm required to post it, even though it's nothing so lovely as Ann's prime rib, Shaun's soup or Sharon's pasta or Kathleen's pear tart or any of the other fabulous things in here!! I had a craving for shrimp, and it's cold and rainy here, so what else could I make but pasta?! So we had four cheese ravioli with steamed broccoli and asparagus with pesto and panko crusted shrimp. I don't know what it is about this dinner, I just keep making it... Neither one of us is hungry anymore by any stretch of the imagination!

Stacy, can I have the recipe for the chicken and dumplings? I think that DD and family might actually eat that! LOL!
Shaun, the lasagna soup might also be a winner!

Dixie those crabs look fabulous-- reminds me of the dinner we had last summer at the Cracked Crab in Pismo Beach!

Ann, I have a small prime rib in the freezer. Maybe next week you'll tell me how to cook it like that? I love grilled meat and that will help burn away some of the fat.

Cheese souffle? Oh I used to love eating them, I just wish my darn stomach would still agree!

LEE!! Oh, I'm so glad to see you here, even if you aren't the one cooking. Just a few steps at a time, lady, and we'll wait and watch and cheer you on!

What's for dinner? Elery will be here in about an hour, I have lamb marinating for him, probably on the grill. We'll have some roasted vegetables and I made onion rye bread last night. We'll see if it's picture worthy, LOL.

Bri,I love that your husband wanted to take a picture.

Ellen, I'll be happy to tell you how I grill a prime rib. Very easy.

Annie, Ashley wouldn't have to fear having ketchup on anything in this house. We are a ketchup free zone.

    Enjoy your weekend with Elery.

Lee glad you are back posting. It won't be long before you areback in your own kitchen cooking up a storm.

We had Veal Piccata for dinner on Thursday night. Along with the Cesar salad I had promised Moe. A little untraditional since I used veal tenderloin so that the meat was still pink in the middle and green peppercorns instead of capers. Because I love green peppercorns and could care less about capers. LOL!

And last night I made my grilled Magnolia Meatloaf for dinner. Baked the Meatloaf before I went to work yesterday morning so dinner didn't take long to put together.

OK, time to catch up. Last night's lamb is still in the refrigerator, I ended up making something called Pasta Fra Diavolo, whole wheat pasta with a spicy sauce and the 2 dozen mussels I still had in the freezer from Christmas when I made the cioppino:

    {{gwi:1473375}}

I made some of the onion rye bread on Thursday evening that I like so well. I know some others on the forum weren't so happy with it, but I still like it, LOL, so I made it even if it doesn't seem to "go" with pasta:

today for lunch we made sushi, one California roll and one with smoked salmon and asparagus:

    {{gwi:1473378}}

After we got back from the tax guy (blech!), we decided to play with some salmon and ended up making a salmon sausage with feta, spinach, moscato and some tarragon. It was nice, but needs some work on the seasoning:

Elery did the salmon sausage on the grill while I made a vegetable stew and we had some more of the onion rye:

    {{gwi:1473380}}

So you see, Ann, you're right, I love it when Elery is here for dinner, so much more fun than just cooking for myself!

Tonight's dinner was the second time that I cooked in a week. I had errands until late so I decided to put together a chicken dish with bruscetta and mushrooms.
I floured some chicken cutlets in brown rice flour (a necessity as I'm not eating wheat, but I like the consistency very much) sauteed them in the oil from the TJ's fresh bruscetta. Removed them from the pan, sauteed the sliced crimini mushrooms in the same oil and then topped the cutlets with additional bruscetta to taste. Served it with some so-so parmesan risotto from Lundberg (meh) and a salad. We both enjoyed it. An experiment gone right, I love it when that happens!
Dessert was some See's candy that's been sitting here since New Years- actually it was kind of stale, but we forced ourselves! LOL

It all sounds and looks delicious! Lee it's so good to see you here again, even if you aren't able to cook for a while.
And also nice to see you Lou, back again with your Italian dishes.

I'm making spare ribs today since a friend found some frozen in a supermarket where she shops and brought them to my gym class.
That's how hard it is to get any kind of unsalted pork ribs here. You have to depend on friends who find them for you.

But yesterday we were out for fish. The same as we always have and I've posted a thousand time here but to make it an even thousand and one times :-) I'll put it here again.
I had fish and chips (and left most of that big daub of tartar sauce), while Wolf had the same hake fish with German potato salad.

The blackbirds outside my window have found the old lamp stand that I'm using for their cat food kibbles.

And after the heaviest rains we've seen in years, the whole of the volcano and surrounding caldera is covered in snow yet again.

Although we're down here with the palm trees, the air is very chilly!

Tried a dab of Jack Daniels Smoky BBQ sauce on top. Served with steamed potatoes, yam, carrots, onion and broccoli.

Cloudy and chilly day here today. I put my washing outside in the hopes that something might dry.

    Happy Sunday evening everyone!

We cooked bone-in chicken breasts on the grill tonight - two ways. Some a butter/garlic mixture and the other BBQ Sauce. We love chicken on the grill and like it charred but not burnt. I made potato salad to go along with it and served it over top of bibb lettuce. I just took a picture of the chicken because DH was hungry and ready to eat. LOL!!!

We moved back home today. It took almost all day loading furniture and things up at Micheal's house and then driving the hour back here, stopping at a Cricket store to resolve a billing problem. Max and Michael unloaded and put things away until almost 4:00.

I saw Lou's pizza last night and it looked so good to me that we ordered piazza for lunch. Of course it wasn't as good as Lou's - I'm sure about that.

For dinner Max grilled spicy chicken parmesan sausages, made a lovely tossed salad and heated some baked beans (yep, from a can). It all tasted good to me.

It's going to be a while before I can stand long enough to cook. When I can, I'll be remembering the grilled prime rib and the grilled chicken.

Little Chilly here too. So I made some Pasta Fasulli.

In a 6 Quart pot of water I boiled 1 1/4 cups of Great Northern Beans for 5 minutes.
Then I took it off the burner and let it sit for a hour.

Put it back on and added all the spices.
Garlic powder, Red pepper , a pinch of Cloves, a little salt, Bay Leaves, pinch of Basil.
3 Tablespoons of Chicken Soup base, 3 Tablespoons of White Vinegar.

Chopped in Small pieces, 1/2 small Onion, piece of Celery,
a small piece of Carrot, 1 small tomatoe.

Cut 4 links of Italian Sausage into pieces, sauteed them a little and added to the pot.

Cut up 1 1/2 cups of Ham and added that too.

When the beans were almost done I added 1 cup of small elbow macaroni, cooked until tender.

Served with a Sprinkle of Parmesan Cheese.

Took a Piece of my Cheese Cake from the freezer; topped with Apricot Preserves, for later.

    {{gwi:1473387}}

Looks a little dry but all the good stuff is on the bottom.

I don't know why I put all this in here. Everyone knows how to make Pasta Fasulli. ???

    So many delicious dinners.
Lee, I'm thrilled to see you posting on the WFD thread. I love how Max takes such good care of you.

Sharon, I love that photo of the black bird.

Dixie, That chicken is just how I like it. The charred bits are the best. (I even love my toast well toasted).

Lou great looking dish of pasta and beans.

I worked the last three days, so dinners were simple. Last night I roasted a chicken. My favourite "no brainer" dinner. Easy to put together without much thought.

And tonight another quick to get on the table dinner. Grilled Burgers with homemade fries. Even the buns were homemade. I baked a batch last night before bed.

Dinner tonight was just chili over rice, no picture needed. I've been baking a bit though this weekend, I had to start yesterday evening to get it all done today. I made Alton Brown's overnight cinnamon rolls and a gruyere stuffed bread from King Aurthur. If you look really carefully, you can see the layers of gruyere in the bread. Just enough to taste it, not so much that it's overpowering. Both good, both going in the file for making again. I think I need to calibrate my oven because the bread got darker than I expected rather quickly!

That chicken dinner looks so good Ann...as do the homemade burgers.

Bri I wish I could have one of those cinnamon buns for my evening supper, after a taste of Dixie's chicken.

Lou I'm one who has never tasted or made Pasta Fasulli but it does look interesting!

So glad to hear you're home Lee!

This morning I was at my Pilates class where I have an after class coffee friend. She used to have a restaurant in England and a popular deli/import shop here in Tenerife, so we spend our coffee time discussing food (it's just before dinner time and we're both hungry.) Today she started talking about paella, and a place up the coast where she had the best paella she's had since living in Spain.

That started me thinking of a little open-air restaurant near home where I'd seen good looking paellas being served, and saw they will do paella for one person which is quite uncommon as most places won't cook them for less than two people. I decided that would be lunch today as Wolf has found a couple of things he likes on their menu, since he won't eat paella. He chose an escalope with green pepper sauce. It came swimming in gravy, which he loves so he was very happy with it! My paella was better than I expected and at a reasonable price.
I think this will be another of our regular inexpensive eating out places. It was sunny today too!

I'll rescue this thread before it slides over to page 2!

    Greg that looks so delicious!

Yesterday I went down to the supermarket where I always bought fresh fish from their very large fish-on-ice tables. They have now changed over to fresh fish in vacuum sealed packages. In other words you can no longer ask the fishmonger to cut it a certain way or skin it for you. Hmm...I guess in some ways it's more hygienic because people can no longer lean over (and sneeze) on top of your slice of salmon as it lies there on the bed of ice. There was no protective sneeze guard or glass. And thinking back to the supermarkets in Canada, the fish also came in clingfilm-wrapped packages on cold shelves. That's if you couldn't get down to the harbour.

So I bought a 400 gram fillet of salmon and it was just fine, so I guess we have to adapt to 'progress'.
There are still fresh sardines, eels and other local fish for sale down in the harbour though. We just don't always care for what they are selling, and they don't sell salmon, of course.

We had it with steamed potato, yam, carrot, broccoli and spinach.

The sun is shining yeah! Think I'll go for a walk today.

Yum, I would like some of Gregs pasta please and some chicken too.

It looks like Saturday was pizza night and I was right there making mine too. Sunday, I pulled out a beef tenderloin roast and made a wonderful red wine mushroom sauce. I pair it all with some pommes frites and steamed cauliflower. Monday was pan seared salmon, boiled potatoes with a butter sauce and a nice green salad with an orange vinegrette. Tuesday I used the Korean short ribs that I had de-frosted. I marinaded them in some Bulgogi sauce I had that was in ajar from the Asian market. They were so-so.

And tonight was the leftover tenderloin. Good again with mashed taters.

Tomorrow night I will be home late, so I know that dinner will be one of my "dinner in a bag" meals. Stuffed chicken breast with homemade stuffing, and a salad tossed as I walk in thw door.

Ann great looking chicken and burger too! I love that you make your own buns. That has to make that burger taste wonderful.

Bri those cinnamon buns look excellent as well as the loaf of bread. I'm sure you enjoyed them.

Sharon I am just drooling over that Paella. I love it! I've only made it one time in my life but have eaten it at a very good restaurant in my town many times. The rest. looks very bright and colorful - I like that. Your salmon looks great too.

I had planned on grilling out (steaks) but the wind really picked up (55+ gusts) but it was really warm. It is now pouring rain as I am typing. We ended up eating some leftovers to clean out the frig. and the steaks will be for tomorrow.

Dixie, I hope the winds die down so you can enjoy your steaks tomorrow night.

Greg great looking pasta. Pappardelle is a favourite.

Sharon, how perfect is that, a Paella for one. Did your brother tell you that it snowed again yesterday?

We had beef stew and dumplings on Monday night.

    I baked Lemon Loaves yesterday.

And we had pizza two nights in a row. I was experimenting with a longer slow rise for the crust. Following the directions at Pizza Making.com by Canadave. Stretching the dough by hand rather than rolling.

Last night I baked three pizzas. One for us and one for each of two of our neighbours. The pizzas were topped with mushrooms and pepperoni.

And then tonight I made another pizza just for Moe and I with dough that had been in the fridge for 32 hours. This one was topped with just my sauce and cheese and sprinkled with a little more oregano and hot red pepper flakes. This pizza was a big hit. Moe actually had four slices which he never does. The crust was amazing. Definitely the way to go.

Yes I see by my brother's webcam that his grass, which was green for a couple of days, has turned white again LOL!

Yesterday I made a big dinner salad, since the day was warm and sunny and we are trying to avoid eating too much meat.
So I used a bag of tender baby salad leaves, tuna, feta, hard boiled egg, carrot, cuke, steamed green beans, red pepper, tomato and chives.
Topped with a light and creamy dressing. We stuffed ourselves and finished with a banana and strong espresso, then a nice siesta curled up with the cat.

Sharon, even I would eat that salad. Its a beauty. I love hard boiled egg in salads and those tomatoes look so much better than what is available here this time of year.

Oh Ann your pizza pictures are killing me! It looks so good.

Sharon your salad looks wonderful! I love, love, love salads and I also adore eggs in mine when I make it as a whole meal.

Steaks are not going to be happening at my house on the grill tonight or inside unless power is restored. We have had wind gusts of 60+ since about 2:30 in the morning. Lost power a while ago and I don't know when it will be back on. When I drove up earlier I see that half of my neighbors fence is down and some small trees and limbs are all over. I'm on my laptop and my battery is dying.

UGH, what to do for dinner?

Good thing we had burgers last night, I'd be hungry for one after checking out AnnT's pic.
But now I have a craving for pizza and salad.

Everyone is doing fantastic with their photo's!

Last Saturday night we had some friend over who needed the high heat chicken experience. They loved it. I experimented with the potatoes. Used baby Yukon's and a lot of salt....i.e Canary Island winkled potatoes. They were pretty salty. I forgot to take a pic of the cherry pie that we had for dessert.

Tuesday night I made crepes with lump crab...very 'rich'.

Off to the kitchen to make spaghetti tonight....

Nancy, those crepes look down right decadent.

And your chicken dinner looks perfect. Just the way I like it.

Dixie, I sure hope the weather has improved for you.

We had a late lunch in Victoria yesterday. Unfortunately. Really bad Thai food. New place that had opened recently in the Langford area. The food came out of the kitchen so quickly, less than a minute after orderd, so you can be sure that everything was premade including the spring rolls. Needless to say we won't be going back to "The Little Thai Place.

I used the last of the pizza dough and made a focaccia last night.

I put a pot of my favourite pasta sauce on to simmer this morning so dinner tonight will be easy to put together when I get home from work.

One of our smaller local markets had wild sockeye salmon fillets for $8.99 a pound. Max bought a piece, sprinkled it with Cajun seasoning and pan seared it. For sides he baked Yukon gold potatoes and sauteed zucchini. He's doing a great job with dinners.

I'm too tired to try to cook dinner but this morning I cut up the baked potato leftover that I had, sauteed it in some butter, poured a beaten agg over it, topped with shredded cheddar (the downside was that I shredded the cheese over the pan and got some on the hot cooktop - cleanup will be later) and had a great frittata for breakfast. Tomorrow I'm going to make chicken soup for lunch from the leftover quicky chicky from Costco. We have three stools at the peninsula counter in our kitchen and I have spread them out so that one is closest to the refrigerator and one in front of the cooktop so I can sit and work.

    Sharon, your salad looks delicious.
Nancy your crepes look wonderful-it's been a long time since we've had crepes and I love them.

Ann, I could pull that foccacia right off the screen. Pasta sounds good too.

Lee that is super news that you are able to be up and cooking right now! I apologize as I haven't kept up with the news on the other board but just saw this and I'm very happy for you. Your husband sounds like he is doing a great job. I love Yukon Gold potatoes.

With all this great cooking , all I had was
a Lil Ole Roast Chicken again , with Stuffing.
Don't look as good as the last one.

But it looks better in person , than in the Photo.
    I love Chicken !!!!!!!!!

    unhuh...Lou..that looks wonderful!

I made a quick s'ghetti dinner...Jar of Bertoli pasta sauce, natural beef, and organic pasta...sprinkle of Parm and some reheated roasted cauliflower...Most of the boys are gone tonight...so the usual Pizza was pointless. Tomorrow will be burgers on the grill and Sunday will likely be Pizza.

I made chicken wings tonight. I had planned on having them as part of the meal for Garlic Virtual Dinner but Dungeness Crabs were on sale so I went with them instead. I made up BBQ Sauce and cooked them up. No pictures. We had baked beans and coleslaw to go along with them. Cookies for dessert.

    Hi Kathleen,

The sausage was mild and flavored with herbs. I used a bit of old bay seasoning and a little chili pepper in the dish.

Lights on this thread. Time for someone to start #291.
