Post Op Dinner Help

A very good friend of mine find out she has breast cancer. She is having a lumpectomy on Friday and I want to make her dinner for that night and need a little help. I know she won't want anything heavy, so I'm making her homemade chicken noodle soup, I have dessert covered, but need something else and I'm drawing a blank! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How about a nice fruit salad, perhaps with a light raspberry vinegar dressing?

What about some comforting rolls or bisquits to go with the soup? Or add some dumplings right into it.

Whew. Party's over. We've cleaned up, kind of. Got to bed at 1:30 am. The tuna turned out pretty well. It was different from the previous fish. Flesh was softer, fattier, not as firm. I skipped the chirasi course because I didn't think this fish was all that suited to sashimi. And I skipped the last course because it was getting late and people were full. The third most favorite dish was tuna marinated in miso and lots of sea salt for 24 hours. Served with a topping of wasabi tobiko (wasabi-infused flying fish roe, buy it at a Japanese market) and a smear of honey-wasabi sauce (exactly what it sounds like, honey mixed with a-not-quite toe-curling amount of wasabi powder). The runner up was the blast-seared tuna. Mix soy sauce, honey, and wasabi. Marinate tuna loin block overnight. Roll loin in sesame seeds to coat. Light charcoal in chimney starter. When coals are ready, put blow dryer at base of starter, so that white flame is roaring from top. Place grill on top, sear loin, each side 20 sec. Slice loin into medallions. Top with reserved marinade. The favorite, by far, was a variant of the pan-seared tuna with ginger shiitake sauce. FOAS posted a link to this dish in the previous tuna thread. I made some modifications - pan-browned the shiitake slices first, omitted the soy sauce, omitted the lime juice, added lime zest. Several people asked for this recipe, so here it is, and thanks again to FOAS - - slice shiitake mushroom caps to 1/4 to 1/8 inch, dice stems - brown diced stems in butter, set aside - brown cap slices in butter, working in single layer and turning each slice individually, to crusty, set aside - chop 1/3 c green onions, 1/4 c cilantro, 2 tbsp fresh ginger, 4 garlic cloves - cook in pan medium heat a few minutes, add mushrooms, then 1 1/2 c whipping cream, heat to low, cook until sauce thickens, set aside - heat to high, get pan very hot, add olive oil, sear tuna just long enough to get 1/8 inch cooked layer on each side - reheat sauce, add zest of 2 limes, add a teeny splash more of cream if sauce looks tired, salt to taste (for me, about 1 tsp kosher salt) - plate and be sure to credit FOAS The last dish, which we skipped, was tuna and scallop ceviche with a salsa of my own tomatoes, peaches, and kiwi. It was something I should have served earlier in the evening. Well, I'll have it for lunch and deliver some to the neighbors.

I've had a morphine pump twice and this was my experience: I had *terrible* nightmares, just terrible. I was extremely agitated and irritable, lost time and got confused twice - and it got even worse for three days after I went off the medication - the morphine can stay in the system (for side effects to contine) for several days. Both times I was on the pump for five to seven days. The morphine was an extremely effective for pain management. I decided that if I ever need that type of pain management again, I will not go for a morphine pump, it will have to be something else, even if it's not nearly as effective for the pain, the side effects made me completely miserable. If he decides to go for the morphine pump, let him know that these could be side effects (very common side effects that I wasn't told about) so that he knows that the morphine is what might be troubling him and to know that he can decide to be taken off it - I didn't realize I was so miserable due to morphine and stayed on it until the doctor chose to take me off.

If they were shared or your family and friends are folks that would order individually but share at the table, I would do appetizers 2,4 and 6 -- thinking two safe bets and one outside the box that most people would probably enjoy trying. If they are going to be ordered individually and not shared then either 1,2 and 4 or 2,4 and 5. For the entree, I am going to be the one to disagree. While DH likes Ceasar salad, I find it over done -- as in too often and overpowering garlic. I would much rather have the arugala salad as an option. To that I would add the salmon, either the ribs or pork shank and the beef. My guess is most kids would like the burger or the ribs if they didn't love one of the others, so I'd probably not chose the burger -- but again, you know your crowd.

Zkathy, I am trying to sell my home here, which I need to do first in order to buy a home in Baltimore. Haven't sold it yet; just retained a new realtor who has to be better than the first one, a total incompetent and unprofessional. As soon as I can sell my place, I am gone. I will find a rental to live in while I wait for my little dream home to come up on the market. My friend Chris is coming over Wednesday after he finishes work to help me pot up the last 4 hostas in fabric grow bags. So far, my hostas and heuchies seem to like their fabric grow bags. My next door neighbor, in the next building over, is also very interested in gardening. Their garden features lots of peonies, a couple roses, no hostas or heuchies. The "landscape workers" spraying of weedkiller has decimated her beautiful rhododendron. It was a beautiful plant, now it's droopy-leaved all over. There is no coincidence about that; it's right after the spraying. Same with the maple trees in the backyard; they are droopy-leaved and shedding leaves. I hope we don't lose them.

Good vibes coming from me too. How kind of you to be thinking of her. Chicken Noodle soup sounds perfect. All you need with it is some fresh rolls or homemade biscuits. True comfort food.

What a nice gesture to make dinner for her...you are very kind.

I think the soup and a nice bread would be just fine, along with whatever dessert you have already planned. If you really feel you need something more, I would probably opt for something veggie....maybe a tray?

Gina, what a nice thing to do for your friend, and I'm sending lots of good healing thoughts.

I agree on the bread, it would be very nice with the soup and she can have toast from the leftovers, or just more bread and soup the next day.

marlingardener is right on with the fruit, too. A fruit salad is always nice, as well as light and healthy.

Dessert you have covered, or I would suggest something like brownies or Ann T's graham chewies, I haven't made those in a long time.

I agree on the bread. I wouldn't really worry about making much else beyond bread, soup and a dessert. I recently did the same thing (friend even had the same surgery) and all my friend was capable of eating was a piece of toast and half a bowl of soup before climbing into bed, nauseated from the anesthesia and wiped out from the pain meds.

Have her eat before taking the pain meds if possible.

One other thing you might bring: soothing tea and/or ginger ale.

My best wishes for your friend's complete and speedy recovery.

I too think breads will be the best thing with the chicken soup.
I will be praying for your friend that she gets a clean bill of health.

Another agreement on the bread. Broth and bread, even if someone can't manage anything else, can help to "soak up" the queasy feeling. Soup is a great idea because even if she can't eat it right away, it can be reheated for an easy, no fuss meal later on.

I think the best food you will be bringing her is food for her soul in your friendship.

Thank you all so much for your good thoughts, kind words and suggestions! She is in surgery as I'm writing this! I don't know why the bread thing didn't come to mind...duh! I haven't mastered bread making so I went with cornbread, I thought she could have that with tea at some point if she didn't like it with the soup! She loves veggies, so I made a cucumber salad for her also and an apple crisp for dessert!
