Stacy, the WonderWeiner loved these and it used up the liver that I always got when I had animals slaughtered. Of course, he liked it best if I just threw that chunk of liver into a pan and cooked it! I think I'd use the food processor for this, it would go pretty quickly.

Liver and Garlic Strips

Ingredients
1/2 pound fresh liver
2 eggs
1/2 cup water
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 tablespoon garlic powder

In a blender, mix the liver, eggs and water. Add the flour and garlic powder and mix well. Pour into a 9- by 12- by 2-inch baking pan and spread evenly in the pan. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 35 to 40 minutes. When done, the mixture should be dry on top and firm to the touch. Cool the mixture in the pan, then cut into 1- by 2-inch strips.

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to three weeks.

Yield: Approximately 50 strips

Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treats

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
2 eggs
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
2 tablespoons peanut butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. Whisk together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff. Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick roll. Cut into 1/2-inch pieces. I used a pizza cutter.
3. Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes

PEANUTTY PUP TREATS

2C Whole Wheat Flour

1 Tablespoon baking powder

1 Cup peanut butter ( chunky or creamy)

1 Cup non fat milk

Pre heat oven to 375* Grease cookie sheet

Combine flour and baking powder. Add peanut butter and milk. Mix well. Roll out on floured board to approx. 1/4" (or less if you want thinner ones). Cut in shapes.

Bake until firm. Turn off oven and leave in until oven cools down. Check as they cook. Should brown a bit and get nicely set before turning off oven.

I often omit the milk and us beef or chicken broth instead. I use the fat free to help get rid of Tigger's bulges.

Well, just in case you don't have enough options, here are my contributions. I think both of them are from Marlen (RIP).

One note of caution, tho. Homemade dog treats should be stored in the refrigerator. I learned the hard way after having more than two dozen stored in the basket I keep commercial treats in get moldy ! Tells ya somethin' about what's in commercial treats, I guess...

1 cup rolled oats
1/3 cup margarine or butter
1 cup boiling water
3/4 cup cornmeal
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons chicken or beef instant bullion
1/2 cup milk
4 ounces shredded cheddar cheese ( 1 cup)
1 egg, beaten
2 cups white or wheat flour

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.Grease cookie sheets. In large bowl combone rolled oats, margarine and water; let stand for 10 minutes. Sitr in cornmeal, sugar, boullion, milk,cheese and egg. Mix well. Add flour 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition to form stiff dough.

On floured surface, knead in remaining flour until dough is smooth and no longer sticky, 3 to 4 minutes. Roll or pat out dough to 1/2 inch thickness; cut with cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on cookie sheets.

Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely. Store loosely covered. Makes 3 1/2 dozen large biscuits.

Stacy, we are adding to our family in about a month, he's an American Mastiff. While reading the breeders website, they discussed some things to do for teething. Someone suggested freezing plain yogurt or pumpkin. I think that would be a great treat for your Sammy and nutritious too!

From "Three Dog Bakery Cookbook" by Dan Dye
INGREDIENTS
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1 cup natural peanut butter
1 cup skim milk!
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
In a bowl, combine the flour and baking powder. In another bowl, mix the peanut butter and milk.
Add wet mixture to the dry, and mix well.
Turn out the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead. Roll out 1/4-inch thick, and cut out shapes.
Place on a greased baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until lightly brown. Cool on a rack, then store in an airtight container.
* Makes 30 large bones.
This is the only one I can locate right now, when I find the others I'll pass them on to you!

wow, Linda - I might be tempted to try one of the first one you listed - LOL. And thanks for the great tip. I wouldn't have thought of that.

Gina - freezing yogurt or pumpkin - GREAT! duh. that makes so much sense. I sometimes mix yogurt with her dog food, she'd no doubt love it frozen. :-)

I don't use the garlic powder, but do chop up whatever fresh herbs I have growing in the yard or in the kitchen drawer..Usually mint and rosemary..because that's what's in the yard.

Stacy, that's a great picture. Sammy can sure stretch out tall and Will's gotten pretty big too. Wow, it doesn't seem like he should look that grown up...

So, when the hubs comes home are you going to tell him the pan in the fridge is the dog treats, or are you going to let him find out on his own? (grin)

hahaha annie! If you could only see him when he opens a bag of the grocery store dog treats...he smells them with that artificial smokey bacony smell - just loves the smell. If I don't tell him these are doggy treats, he might just finish them off!
