PK, You said; "the first time I let it do the whole scan." What did it do after this?? After the scan completes, can you use the computer? If so, please download a HardDrive Utility to test your HardDrive. Preferably from the manufacturer's site of your HardDrive. It's quite possible that you are looking at a bad HardDrive issue here.

You are absolutely correct damccoy! After reading former thread, I noticed the possibility of a bad HardDrive was not mentioned. Sure makes it easier to click on the link to view prior troubleshooting to eliminate those.

I will try to answer some of your questions, but you all have to understand and I am a complete novice when it comes to computers. When I let the complete scan run, it did nothing, just stayed up on the screen. I think I hit esc. and my icons came up. Before this I had done several shut downs and the same check disc came up on the screen. The forums you pointed me too don't make a whole lot of sense to me. I think I have everything saved to an external hard drive. Now I am still at a disadvantage as to what to do. all program were installed by the place that I bought my computer so I don't know how to check my hard drive as I don't know the mfg. Now what do I do? Thanks so much for all the help so far. PK

Are you using the computer that you are having the trouble with to post this information?

I am providing a link for you to go to so that you can download a free HardDrive Utility Tool that will do the HardDrive test. Though, it is best to use the one from your computer's manufacturer.

Once it is downloaded, and the test performed, you can delete it from your Add/Remove Programs.

If you do not feel comfortable using this tool, I would take it to a Local Repair Shop and have them do it for you. If it is the HardDrive you will have to have them replace it for you, unless you are capable of replacing it yourself.

If you would like to wait for more information provided by other members, that is ok, too!

pkspigs, notice you said you had disconnected that D drive. I also noticed you said you have another external drive connected. Is it possible that the one you now have connected is calling itself the D drive? You might try disconnecting that one, and then rebooting, to see if that solves your problem. Good Luck :-)Cat

I am pretty sure I am going to take it in. Yes I am using the computer that I am having trouble with. I tried restarting my computer and that darn screen came up again. I forgot to mention that i had some trogen horses on here last week, but malwarebytes and Avast sent them to quarantine. I simply do not know what to do next. all I want to do is use the "go back" or what ever you call it to find something that I deleted and cannot do it. this is what I was trying to say about the fact that you are not rid of the infections just because malwarebytes and avast put them in quarantine does not mean they are all gone from the system it is very rare for them to be fully cleaned that way, the one you had is very very rarely all removed that way, I am sure you have part of the infection still there that is causing this problem and the not being able to do system restore that is a definite symptom of these kinds of infections. this is why we try to get people to go to the other forum and follow the clean up procedures to get it all off the computer.
If you have someone to work on it be absolutely sure you tell them you were infected and show them the malwarebytes logs, not sure they will be able to clean it or not depends on how much time they are willing to spend on it.

If it turns out that you do not have a hard drive or other hardware problem, there is something else to consider. Taking the machine to someone and paying them to figure out and fix your problem may not be cheap or quick. If your machine is capable of running Win 7, maybe your $ would be better spent to upgrade to that...unless you are trying to save files that you absolutely cannot afford to lose.

Even if you fix the machine without doing this, you have to identify how and why this infection occurred in the first place. If you do not do this, then all your time-effort-money will be wasted because you will repeat the same errors and will certainly become infected again. Do you have any idea how this happened? Did you download any free toolbars-games-screensavers? Did you open an email attachment without scanning it? Do you normally click on unfamiliar links (especially on Facebook or MySpace) without checking them out first? If you did any such thing, you have to STOP until you learn more about how to keep yourself and your machine safe.

I would follow through with ravens suggestions. Before taking it to a repair shop and spending TONS of money, verify that you are completely clean of the TROJAN. The folks at LandzDown will help you.

Once you are clean and free of infection, go to this thread here and download WOT (Web of Trust). It is not a fix all, but it will help target bad sites that you should not access.

my best guess is that there are some updates that were not up to date especially java and adobe the vulnerabilities are allowing these kinds of infections to happen when visiting sites that have bad script and clickjacking in their code, using firefox with adblock and no script also helps.
But being fully cleaned is essential.

I do not see where you have stated a make and model or the age of this computer. Not relevant to infections but very relevant to spending money on fixing at a shop.

Personally I would remove those external drives they are just muddying the waters here. Before doing that I would back up my address book, favourites, emails and any other data. Then I would restore the computer to the factory defaults and start out squeaky clean once again.

Azinoh's thoughts on upgrading to Win 7 might even be worth consideration if the computer is not too old.

If you take this to a shop it is fairly certain they will wipe your hard drive without backing up anything at all then you have lost much more than the money they will charge for the 'service'.
