Daughter home from college; have router installed; now what?

We recently purchased Hughesnet service & while installer here for the satellite he also installed Belkin Wireless G router so our kids could use their laptops wirelessly while they're home. Now I'm stuck. Daughter uses her iBook wirelessly at her apt and at college locations. How do I advise her to connect wirelessly while she's here? Would someone be willing to give me very simple steps to follow to get her connected? We haven't had a laptop here to test our system; hoping it's just my ignorance & nothing else.

I must acknowledge I'm not very savvy about these kinds of things, but w/ simple instructions I'll give it my best shot. Thank you for any asst you can provide in keeping family harmony over the holidays.

There should be nothing to do if your Daughter was able to connect at school & at other locations then the laptop will easily pick up the Belkin G Router signal in your home, some laptops indicate the signal is present down by the clock in the task bar double click it. Also you can click Start > control panel > network connections if there would be a problem, but I think you will be surprised and she will connect with out any problem..

If you have any connection problems the first thing to do is to shut the router off for 20 seconds and then put it back on.

I truly appreciate all your help mikie!It is so difficult for me to explain exactly what is going on.I only know computer basics and just enough terminology to be confusing. LOL Currently,I am connecting to the internet by going to Earthlink.net and clicking on the set up button. I am accessing my e-mail through Earthlink.net, too. That is the only way I can connect to webpages.I can no longer connect using on desktop icons or by going to internet connections. The problem started when I allowed a Belkin auto setup to program my wireless router to my computer. Even if I disconnect the router and try to connect the way I did before the router I still can not connect through my computer. The only reason I mentioned proxy server was that when earthlink had me join teamviewer4, teamviewer4 stated I was on a proxy server and that I needed to connect with my computer connection. I am basing my statement on that info. I may not be on a proxy server. Is connecting through Earthlink.net connecting to a proxy server? I have not called earthlink back yet as the tech seems to get frustrated with my problem before it can be corrected. Also, it is a minimum 1 hour call each time.

Bestyears - You are so welcome. I must confess that I am thankful that I'm finally out of the college search process. All 3 of mine have finished college, one added an MBA, one went to law school and the third went Ivy League and is now an apprentice in stage production in Philly. If your DD ends up there I'm only about 20 minutes away - I'll met you in Center City for lunch! I've always liked Drexel although none of mine went there. My kids drew a circle around Philly and then looked for schools outside that area. Part of that is because their high school was fairly small - they had about 150 in their graduating classes and they wanted a broader life experience. But many of their classmates did graduate from Drexel and most of them enrolled in the co-op program. And for trips back to Texas - it's an easy commute to the airport. My brother lives in Houston and he used to fly up to visit our parents often. Even though I grew up on the other side of Penna. after living here for 30 years I've become an unabashed supporter of Philly. It's just so darned convenient. The Jersey shore is 60 miles away, New York City is 90 and there are several ski areas within a 2 hour drive. When my DD was at Columbia I'd hop the train and in 90 minutes I'd be in Manhattan and we'd met up for a day of shopping or a Broadway matinee or just lunch. I'm not sure where you are in Texas but we do get snow here!

Abusers isolate their victims from friends & family. One of the most effective ways to do it is to convince the victim that her friends & family don't really love her, that *they* want to control her & that they resent him for freeing her from their control, that they're jealous of what she has with him, etc. While he's pouring that poison into her ears, he's also being so obnoxious to her friends & family that friends/family cannot stand him. If he can, he'll provoke them into an ultimatum such as... until he can act respectful, he can't come into their home... Then the victim gets indignant & angry & "realizes" that he's right, her family is no good, they just want to control her... & she severs the family ties herself. & it works great, for him, since he can't be blamed for the rift; *he* didn't do anything, *she* made the choice to sever ties. I think this girl is under the control of an expert controller/abuser. If you approach her directly or if you try to address the issues, you're a goner; she's "in love", she believes everything this guy says, & she's convinced you're the enemy of the most wonderful man in the world. Keep sending her chatty emails, call her on the phone, don't push her at all, but make sure she knows you're still there. I wish you the best.

the place we ordered from doesn't keep it in stock. We've got the sheet from where it was shipped from, so we plan to call them. There's 10 other places that sell it, tho, w/in a couple few hours of here, if need be, and I don't know if they all get them thru the place ours came from or I would assume there are more warehouses or wherever. I'd think we'd have it all taken care of by May, so I think we'll be good. And if not, we'll figure it out then! Nice we don't have a big house-it was like 4 and a partial boxes to do the pantry.

When your daughter fires up her laptop she should get an icon on the task bar by the time for available network connections. She may have to double click this icon and select your home network. The installer did name it and set up security (like WPA) right?

When she first selects your home network she will have to enter the pass phrase once to gain authority to use network.

If you do not have security set up then anyone in range can be using your internet connection and easily hack into your network.

Let me know what happens when she tries and I will walk you through it if necessary.

klaa2 - When she first turned on her Apple iBook last night, a window opened up asking if she wanted to connect to the WPU (or something similar). Perhaps this was what you were referring to. We will try again later this morning & I appreciate your offer of asst. I'll definitely get back w/ you if we have more questions. Thank you so much.
