Weird problem with SD card

My wife has a Panasonic digital camera with a 2 GB SD card. It's about 3/4 full of pictures. I recently copied and pasted some of the recent shots to my computer. My wife complained later that I deleted them from the card because she could no longer view them in the camera. There are 715 files listed, and you can view some of the photos on the camera, but some are just black screens. However, when I insert the card into my computer's card reader, I can see all 715 files. Why are some of the pictures blanks on the card when viewed in the camera, but not when the card is inserted into my computer?

Sorry I can't answer your question but when I get home from taking photos, the first thing I do with them is put copies from the card on to an external HD and on the computer. I lost 500 travel photos on my PC one time and had luckily backed them up.

Yes, I back up photos, too. The issue, however, is that they can be viewed when I insert the card in my computer's card reader, but not all are viewable when the card is in the camera...

Sounds like a problem with a video overlay setting. The computer uses video overlay to display the video. But the overlaid video is not being sent to the TV. That's my fluff-for-brains answer. I have no idea how to fix it. Pooh Bear

Thanks everyone. I too would like to know why someone said not to use the camera's transfer ability; my camera came with a utility program & cable specifically for transferring photos. It has worked fine, knock on wood. As for the cards, I bought the same cards I always buy, but maybe they are making them differently now? not sure. Or maybe my card reader is malfunctioning. not sure. So I'll just keep transferring via EOS Utility for now. (which does not use up the battery that much, BTW--the transfer is fairly fast and the camera shuts itself off after it's done, if I have to let it go awhile/walk away from it)

Standard SD card capacities range from 4 MB to 2 GB, and for high capacity SDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB as of 2008. The format has proven to be very popular. However, a change in the format, while allowing capacities greater than 4 GB (SDHC), has created compatibility issues with older devices which cannot read the new format. I have only 4GB cards, but I did find this: SDHC cards use the same physical format as SD cards but cannot be used with SD host devices that do not comply with SDA Specifications Version 2.00. Current SD cards complying with Version 1.01 and Version 1.10 use either the FAT12 or FAT16 file system, whereas Version 2.00 uses FAT32. This incompatibility could explain your problem (FAT is File Allocation System). Now...I have to check the specs on the card slot on our laptops. I almost bought 8GB cards the other day.

Kudzu9, You might try asking your question at DPReview. It is a forum for camera users. You will have to join but if anyone can give you an answer someone there can. After joining just select your camera type from the list of forums.

Good Luck and I would like to know if you find an answer. This is a strange problem unless by some chance there was a check mark somewhere to "delete selected photos when done downloading"...........?

Thanks for the link. I'll post there and see what I find out. I'm pretty familiar with computers and I know I didn't do anything special when I copied a few of them onto the computer. If they weren't on the card anymore, I'd figure I absent-mindedly cut and pasted rather than copied and pasted, but that's clearly not the situation. I'll report back if I get enlightened. In the meantime, if anyone else has an idea, please feel free to speculate...

That happened to my movies on my SD card when I downloaded Quicktime lite for viewing on my PC. Once I connected the SD card to the card reader, all the movie files on the SD card had the "Q" icon in front of them. It's like Quicktime had converted them to a format that the camera could not read (but my PC could). I can't say if that is what actually happened, but that was the result.
