File associations

I did a search for this error message, but did not find any one satisfactory answer. I remember it happening to me, and I was able to fix the problem but now I don't remember what I did. A friend received an e-mail with an attachment (I don't know what kind of file it was) and got the message:

"The file does not have a program associated with it for this action. Create an association in the Folders Option control panel."

I thought I had seen a recent post about this same problem, but it didn't come up in the forum search.

In e-mail this most commonly happens when someone sends you an attachment with data created by a program you don't have. So if for instance the person does not have Microsoft Word installed and receives a word document this error would be generated, the solution of course would be to Create an association to do that you would install word, or a program that recognizes the file association--Really need to know what the file is so we / you can recommend a program that would open it. Yes, there was a thread on this within the past few weeks.

A friend on Hughes.net sends me graphics with the size of the graphic after the extension. For example

Img 233.jpg 344kb

There won't be a file association so what I do is save the file to a folder, usually My Documents, and then rename it deleting the 344kb and it opens just fine.

On text documents I have on occasion gone into the document properties and changed the "open with" line. Other times I have simply changed the extension and opened the document.

If you haven't solved the problem yet, give us the document nname and extension and maybe we can come up with something more specific.

open(unzip) see I said the words baffle me, I unzip the file, and the pages are there for me to work into a word document, and then into a pdf for ease in sending, but the editing isn't the same anymore, I get the pages in paint now, rather than just the unzipped format. I can click open with Microsoft Picture manager, and still get to the editing part to go to word document, but is another step added and I would like to go back to the short version of editing. I have all the facilities to unzip files, just am wondering why all of a sudden I have paint program when I want to just plain edit the pages I have. this is all Greek to me, too much to take in, and as long as I can still edit, tho it takes longer, will stick with what I have, perhaps someday it will rite itself? You know, every time I run into problems, I kick myself, for ever getting acquainted with a computer, had I known what a hoodo it would be for me to work with, I never would have gotten into this. I enjoy it a great deal, but sometimes it is just overwhelming to me. I am a laborer, not a secretary, and hard to work with this sort of stuff. The issue is to do with file associations. I do not use Quicktime. So using music as an example. Say you currently have all you music files associated with Windows Media Player. This means every time you double click on any musical type file it will open with this program. You then decided to download and install something like jetAudio which is a radio player. During the install jetAudio will ask if you want various file types associated with it, here you can click to accept everything going to jetAudio in future or click on just a select few or none at all. Same with photos and pictures, I use Irfanview at times but I refuse to allow it to be associated with a any picture file format.

OK, thank you so much for this great help. Open Office is installed and I now can open the attachment on the laptop. However, the document I typed on my own computer had a lot of tabs in it, and everywhere I tabbed, there is a wide blue line the length of the tab on the version I can see on the laptop. Is there any to get rid of the blue line? Again, I very much appreciate your help.

I still don't know what kind of files, but I suspect that these might be Power Point slide shows, because I had the same thing happen even though I had Power Point Viewer installed. I went to Control Panel and found the Folders Option, so I e-mailed her some step by step instructions as to how to make the association. When I hear from her again I'll know, hopefully, what kinds of files these are.

Yes, these are .pps files, so I think we have the problem solved. If necessary I'll go to her house and help her.
