'File does not have program associated...'

DH is having trouble opening attachments on his laptop. I recently attached a Microsoft Word document and sent it to him via email. He gets this message:

"File does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."

I went to Control Panel, it's on Classic View, clicked on the Default Program icon, but from there I do not know what to choose. There is a list of maybe 15 items but I don't know what to choose. I can list them if that would help.

Your document should open in Microsoft Word on his machine, does DH have word installed? Or open office program something like that.

I just checked his machine and do not see Word. Seems unbelievable, doesn't it? My son set the computer up for him, and he does not do word processing, so maybe DS just didn't put the program on for him.

Is that the problem?

iwoagirl2006, Thank you for the info on Microsoft PowerToys, I never heard of it before now. I will have to look this over, it sounds pretty neat. pkponder, is there a check next to Block Images and other external content in HTML email? There is no checkmark in that box. What type of picture file are you attempting to attach? I have some pictures from my camera (Kodak easyshare camera)and I took them from the Kodak gallery and transfered them into a folder. I then resized some of those pictures. I right click on the picture itself then choose send to, then Mail Recipient and it goes to Outlook Express. It's worked before but not now. I just happened to notice when I went to my other clipart folders that when I put my mouse on a clipart it is now showing Kodak Easyshare, those cliparts did not come from Kodak Easyshare they came from the Microsoft website where I got them from Microsoft Publisher to make cards. Why did Kodak easyshare take over my cliparts and how do I get it back to normal? Now I know what has happened the Kodak software is set as the default picture viewer. I don't know how that happened. How do I Change the application back to Windows Media Viewer? When it is set to the Media Viewer I can do everything in Outlook Express as I use to and open the paperclip to see the pictures that come in to me. The search that I did really doesn't help me much with this problem but it did let me know what happened and when I checked out every picture, clipart etc that I have in my folders it shows Kodak Easyshare .gif or jpeg etc. Now that I know what the problem is I need to know how to get my clipart etc to open with the Windows Picture Viewer. Any idea's? thirdfrt!!!

Tia the pps extension more than likey is a PowerPoint Slideshow extension. Microsoft has a free PowerPoint Viewer for download and also the free Open Office should have an application to be able to handle these files for you.

Power Point associated program?

You must have downloaded PowerPoint Viewer. You want the File Types tab, scroll down until you see the extension PPS, click it, it should show you the extension details below and what it opens with, you can click change and look on the list for Power Point or browse to where ever you saved the Power Point Viewer. I reason I think you have the viewer is because Power Point comes with Microsoft Office. Another way would be to save the PPS attachment from your email, after you save it somewhere, right click the file and select "Open With" and then choose Power Point Viewer.

Video file association problem

You will need either RealPlayer or Real Alternative to play a .rm file. After you install the one of your choice, right-click the filename in Windows Explorer, select Properties, where it says "opens with" click the Change button, select the program you want to open the file with, click OK then Apply and that should do it. This is for XP, Vista is probably similar.

That's why the file will not open. Have DH download this free word program it's great and will open Microsoft Word files..

OK, thank you so much for this great help. Open Office is installed and I now can open the attachment on the laptop.

However, the document I typed on my own computer had a lot of tabs in it, and everywhere I tabbed, there is a wide blue line the length of the tab on the version I can see on the laptop. Is there any to get rid of the blue line?
