I think this is what your after

Before you can do anything you need to know what program is supposed to open the file and you must also have it installed on your PC. If you are ok on both these requirements then the easiest way is to right-click the file, choose 'Open With' and 'Choose Program' from the menu. Now either highlight the program in the list or use the Browse button to find it. Before clicking on OK put a tick in the box labelled 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.

If you don't know the program to use then post back with the extension of the file and someone may recognise it.

I am having the exact problem and it started today. I wonder if it is a glitch in the system.

First of all thanks for your reply to my post.

I have tried everything, including your suggestions and nothing opens the attachment. Now what does happen is when I send it to- (mail to recipient) it does go into the part where you would normally type a letter and you can see the picture from there but you can't click on the paper clip and get it to show up. I do have it set under the security section with a checkmark placed in Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus. I removed that checkmark rebooted and tried it again and when I click on the paperclip I still get the message that I posted above, so it looks like nothing is changing and I don't know why. I was able to do it when I had winxpsp2 but now since I have WinXPsp3 I am unable to open the paperclip. Could it be that since I have SP3 now that would be the reason for not being able to open the paperclip? In SP2 I could open the paperclip and see it on the page itself but now I can only see it on the page. I am at a loss, any other idea's? Nothing that I do in Outlook Express seems to change anything.

Could google open attachments in outlook an see if any other reported problems b-4 we chase a ghost.

I have used Incredimail for years and luv it, it's great for creative people, I only use the free version but that's all that is needed..

I used to resize my pictures this way, but someone clued me into a Windows PowerToy that will quickly resize pictures.

It is awesome!!

I am on dialup - and I can upload these reduced pictures quickly. It also automatically renames the picture, so you are not changing the original file...it just tacks on "small" at the end of the picture name.

Scroll down the page - it is on the right side. It is called Image Resizer. A very quick download even on dialup.

Once you have it installed, you can just right click on a picture, and one of the options is to "resize pictures"

oh..and Incredimail - yuck!

What type of picture file are you attempting to attach? In OE, under Tools--->Options, on the Security tab, is there a check next to Block Images and other external content in HTML email? If so, try unchecking that and restarting OE.

The paper clip pictures open for me....OE "isn't" boring...you can even do more with it than Incredimail....

OE is so easy to set it to do text only. Then you dont have to worry about it auto opening graphics or running funny script when you open your e-mails. The attachements you can always save to file and scan before opening. Dont have to worry about your virus program stripping potentially harmful files.. Don't have to worry about backgrounds, colors, fonts, inserting pictures.

Life's easy with text only.

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel.

Did you go to the Control Panel - Folder Options Icon -
Click the File Type Tab.
Locate the type of file you have and down below click Change and set as needed.

I've never had to do this and I only make a suggestion for
you to check into.
When you checked in Tools - Options - Security Tab -
Their are more setting that can be changed but it will make
you less secure, but it may be needed.

There is no checkmark in that box.

What type of picture file are you attempting to attach?

I have some pictures from my camera (Kodak easyshare camera)and I took them from the Kodak gallery and transfered them into a folder. I then resized some of those pictures. I right click on the picture itself then choose send to, then Mail Recipient and it goes to Outlook Express. It's worked before but not now. I just happened to notice when I went to my other clipart folders that when I put my mouse on a clipart it is now showing Kodak Easyshare, those cliparts did not come from Kodak Easyshare they came from the Microsoft website where I got them from Microsoft Publisher to make cards. Why did Kodak easyshare take over my cliparts and how do I get it back to normal? Now I know what has happened the Kodak software is set as the default picture viewer. I don't know how that happened. How do I Change the application back to Windows Media Viewer? When it is set to the Media Viewer I can do everything in Outlook Express as I use to and open the paperclip to see the pictures that come in to me.

The search that I did really doesn't help me much with this problem but it did let me know what happened and when I checked out every picture, clipart etc that I have in my folders it shows Kodak Easyshare .gif or jpeg etc. Now that I know what the problem is I need to know how to get my clipart etc to open with the Windows Picture Viewer.

Any idea's?

So what are the extensions on the files something special to kodak ?? or regular .jpg ,,, or what?
fwiw; Some Kodak camera's used a special extension .KDC i think .. i forget now. Other than kodaks programs,,, Only a few graphic programs would open them without a special plugin.

Right click a pic holding down the Shift key I think,, maybe the control key ... then the context menu will have a choice of what program you want to open that file,, and will have a checkbox to set it to 'Always open this extension with this program' or worded similar.

After I posted the problem with Kodak being the default setting for those pictures I found exactly what you just posted here. You are right about this but it took me some hunting before I stumbled across it and when I came back here you just confirmed it for me. The problem was that Kodak somehow set itself to become the default viewer for all of my photo's, clipart etc and it also caused the problem for Outlook Express with my not being able to open the picture that was sent to me by clicking on the Paperclip there. It is fixed now and I sure do thank you for helping confirm this for me. "Smiles" I have saved this so that if this ever happens again I will know what to do for now on.
