help with Outlook Express Addresses and Thunderbird

When I got my new PC with Windows 7 a few months ago I asked for help getting my addresses from my Outlook Express. I did a search and found my original posting and the helpful replies. Sorry, but I can't figure out what I did. I have my old contacts on a flashdrive, in Outlook Express form. I remember I had to convert them to CSV, but I don't remember how I did it. Can someone walk me thru it?

So to me it looks like you would insert the flash drive, save the contents as a .csv text file and import that to Thunderbird.

You don't have to have them in csv form to import them to thunderbird. In thunderbird click on Address Book > Tools > Import > Address Book and then you can select the kind of addresses you want to import. Outlook Express is one choice.

As a user stuck on an antique DUN I recognize your concern regarding your e-mail. It is my guess you are not speaking of your e-mail in general, but rather e-mails that are graphic intensive or have photo attachments. Since you are on a DUN it will make little difference if you convert to a web-based account or not. Your system will still have to download the e-mails and their attachments into a temporary file for the web-based client to open them. There are a couple of things that you can do, but I am going to wait to see if my assumption is correct. I do as Gene reports and automatically purge my deleted e-mail upon closing Windows Mail, and previously OE. However, if you decide to enroll in this option once the e-mail is deleted it is gone forever. If Windows ever wants to compact your e-mail allow it to do so. DA

I have just loaded Outlook on a new notebook, Outlook 2002. I've used this version of Outlook since 2002, but alas that notebook did a big crash. The good news, I had all but the last two days of message folders on a back up drive, in a folder called "Exchange". Now, on my old XP home there was a folder called "OutlookFolders" which had "Exchange" and other details in it. So, all I need to do is copy the back-up data into the new computer's "OutlookFolders", but I can't find them, nor can the XP search. I do have folders maked to shoe hidden. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a very effective program that you can download for free called "Spam-Aid", it will block ALL messages that are from anyone that is not listed in your address book.It is installed on your computer as a separate program and you can use it, or bypass it to check your email the usual way without anything being blocked. Just keep in mind when using Spam-Aid to check you mail, EVERYTHING is blocked and deleted at the server except for messages from those that are listed in your address book. It is very effective at what it does, I use it and am well pleased with it. I might add that the program does have a way for those whom you know that are not listed in your address book to get a messsage delivered to you by way of a "password" which they can obtain from a clue you give them in setting up the program. gmom, Here is the link that is most likely to save your day: www.OEHelp.com/OETips Scroll down to the red 'Update'. Have a read, but before you do anything else, download the free programme Outlook Express Quick Backup (don't worry about the command line instructions because you never use them - you just push the buttons). Before you run OE Quick Backup create a new Backup Folder (preferably on another drive) e.g. 'Current'. Run OE Quick Backup and select the 'Current' folder then click 'Backup All'. Once your latest data is safely backed up in 'Current' create a couple more folders e.g. 'Old 2008' and 'Old 2007'. This is because, if things work o.k., you are likely to end up with several .dbx files with the same name and you need to save them in different places - as explained in the next paragraph. So, to recover e.g. an old "Sent" email folder copy sent.bak and save it to your current identity as sent1.dbx and then backup that to "Old 2008". A quick word about .bak files - when Widows saves a later version of any file with the same name as the original one it changes the extension of the original file to .bak e.g. text.txt to text.bak and program.exe to program.bak. This gives you only one chance to 'easily' recover your data because if you save again using the same name then the first .bak file is overwritten - this is windows way of preventing your hard drive from becoming full with obsolete files. N.B. My Windows theory might not be 100% correct (I am both old and self-taught!) but the general principles are about right and it could save you from corrupting anything that you do manage to recover. Bob, your suggestion sounds the easiest but......I moved the address book file, off the flashdrive onto desk top, but it says it can't any address book to import.

I guess Thunderbird is looking for Outlook Express which is no longer around. Have you tried double clicking on the .wab file to see if the windows mail program will open it? Whatever version of windows mail is included with Win 7 should open the file and then you should be able to export it as a csv file. If double clicking doesn't open it try right clicking on it and then click open with and see if some mail program is on the list.

There isn't a mail program with Windows 7, that is why it was suggested to use the Thunderbird.

Zep, how do I save them as CSV? The link you gave must pull them from a Outlook Express that is already on the machine that one is using. Like I said, I did this in February, but I can't remember how I did it. I can't send the contact via e-mail from my other machine because if I open up Outlook Express it is going to want to down load 3 months of e-mails, etc.

I really don't know how, If you put the flash drive in the computer, right click the file and rename it to outlook .csv then drag it to the desktop?????
