Outlook Express?

My daughter said she got an e-mail from Microsoft that we would no longer be able to use Outlook Express. I didn't get such an e-mail...is this true?

I have no idea I have not used OE in years but if you happen to need a very good replacement you might want to look at thunderbird by mozilla, it is very good and easy to use. You can even set it up to get some webmail such as gmail and yahoo as well as your regular email.

Does your daughter use hotmail? If so, they are upgrading their protocols and Outlook Express will no longer work after 20 June 2008. See the link below for further info. HTH.

With MS Office 2007 or 2000 just open Outlook and the setup window appears. Probably the same for other versions. Follow along and at some point you will probably be asked if you wish to make Outlook your default mail handler.

I have just loaded Outlook on a new notebook, Outlook 2002. I've used this version of Outlook since 2002, but alas that notebook did a big crash. The good news, I had all but the last two days of message folders on a back up drive, in a folder called "Exchange". Now, on my old XP home there was a folder called "OutlookFolders" which had "Exchange" and other details in it. So, all I need to do is copy the back-up data into the new computer's "OutlookFolders", but I can't find them, nor can the XP search. I do have folders maked to shoe hidden. Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, OE is an email client. You can utilize it to set up your email from various providers (comcast, verizon, ect) If, for instance your email address was joe_nm@comcast.net, someone conceivably could go right to comcast.net and log in with your email address and actual email password (if they knew it)and access your email. That's the point that I was trying to make about your comment "info says this does not prevent access to messages outside OE.". Identities in OE are fairly safe if your family members don't have the password and you remember to log off after using it. It's certainly not iron clad, but is fairly good protection.

Outlook Express functions fine for typical pop3 email accounts.

If you use Outlook Express to access your Hotmail account, the hotmail access via OE will cease to function shortly.

As of June 30, 2008, Microsoft is disabling the DAV protocol and you will no longer be able to access your Hotmail Inbox via Outlook Express. As an alternative, we recommend that you download Windows Live Mail, a free desktop e-mail client that has the familiarity of Outlook Express and much more.

The way that I understand it, you will need to download Windows Live as an email client if you want to continue to get Hotmail into your computer. And you need to have at least XP on your computer to do that. You will, however, still be able to use Hotmail at the MSN website.

An alternative is to use another POP email address, such as Gmail, and you can continue to use Outlook Express.

IMHO, this is just another way that Microsoft is forcing people to upgrade their operating system when, in fact, the old operating system is doing all that one wants it to do.

I am using 2000 PRO and it does all that I need it to do. I just today set up 2 friend's Outlook Express to get mail from Gmail and they are going to dump Hotmail.

Webmail has advantages for many people - especially the non-geeky types for when they stuff their computer with a virus or just break it - they don't loose all their emails.

I use hotmail and gmail. I have never used OE to access my hotmail. I never liked OE. I access my gmail directly from gmail webmail and also have my thunderbird set up to access my gmail too. I access my hotmail from hotmail.com, from my msn page which has a direct link to my hotmail account, and from my msn browser that is part of the msn package that comes with Verizon fios.
The only thing that is going to change is that you can not get your hotmail in OE you can still see it all by just going to hotmail.com and logging in to it.

What that means is, you no longer will be able to access Hotmail (with) while you are in OE.
You will STILL have OE to write and receive e-mail as usual.
When you DL Windows Live, it uses your HotMail addy and password automatically and takes in all your webmail accounts for you to be able to write to from as tho----and also OE by picking from a drop down list to choose what to put after From: making it look as tho you were writing from that account when really you are in Windows Live..
