Outlook Express & spam question

I'm not sure what version of OE I have - it's pretty old as I'm running W/98SE, and it came with that. Not sure where to look to determine version, or if it's even important.

I know how to block incoming e-mails I don't want, but is there a way to report them as spam, like there is on G-mail?

Just to vent a little, I'm always very careful where I send messages using OE. I use Yahoo or G-mail for most of my correspondence. But my not-so-dear DH blundered onto a website, asked for information, and gave them our OE address. Ever since, I've been innundated with filth.

I don't know how many addresses OE will let me block. I've sure used up a bunch. I suppose changing our OE address is one option, but I'd rather not have to do that.

Any suggestions welcome!

There is a very effective program that you can download for free called "Spam-Aid", it will block ALL messages that are from anyone that is not listed in your address book.It is installed on your computer as a separate program and you can use it, or bypass it to check your email the usual way without anything being blocked. Just keep in mind when using Spam-Aid to check you mail, EVERYTHING is blocked and deleted at the server except for messages from those that are listed in your address book. It is very effective at what it does, I use it and am well pleased with it. I might add that the program does have a way for those whom you know that are not listed in your address book to get a messsage delivered to you by way of a "password" which they can obtain from a clue you give them in setting up the program. I use Mail Washer and like it very much.

The Pro is $$ so be careful you don't DL that one.
Look for the free one.

The way that I understand it, you will need to download Windows Live as an email client if you want to continue to get Hotmail into your computer. And you need to have at least XP on your computer to do that. You will, however, still be able to use Hotmail at the MSN website. An alternative is to use another POP email address, such as Gmail, and you can continue to use Outlook Express. IMHO, this is just another way that Microsoft is forcing people to upgrade their operating system when, in fact, the old operating system is doing all that one wants it to do. I am using 2000 PRO and it does all that I need it to do. I just today set up 2 friend's Outlook Express to get mail from Gmail and they are going to dump Hotmail. Smitty Smitty

Update: I just called her on the phone. She does not use Outlook. She uses something like ATT Yahoo for her email. When she goes into Programs....and tries to open Outlook Express, she gets some message that mentions there is an error....and goes on to talk about a POP server....and other things way over my head. I suggested that she call her provider for some help. It was over my head. I thank you raven and Bob for your messages. Larry

I don't think OE has a spam folder. Not factory default one anyhow. You can make rules to do lots of things one might be to delete mail with certain text.. one option would be to send it into the Deleted folder. You can make a spam folder and send mail with certain attributes into it pretty easy.

Oooooops,

That is a bummer of a place to go. I know I had a hard time finding the URL to a place you do not have to enter your e-mail address to get it so ignore that one.

I have mail washer pro. I used the free 30 day trial and decided it was worth it . Just takes one slip using your email addy . Gin

What a shame. It appears you did everything you could with multiple dedicated accounts, and then another's misstep creates a concern for you.

I am going to assume for a moment that the OE address is ISP provided. If I am correct, why not consider contacting your ISP and asking for a change in your user account name? Even if it is an on-line account the transition is not burdensome.

Yes, you would have to notify all your contacts with the new address, but this would allow you to have a clean start. As an added bonus, you could sieze the opportunity to parse your addressbook by not providing the new address to anyone you did not wish to be in contact with.

Sure it is temporarily inconvenient, but it is a certain fix to your concern.

Finally, if Hubby doesn't have his own on-line e-mail account get him one and ask him to use that one.

Actually, I think I may have found a way to at least divert some of the garbage. There something called "mail rules" that you can type words into that it automatically sends to delete or other options. I'll see how that works, if not, I'm printing your suggestions here and will go from there.

BTW, DH's ears are still ringing from the lecture he got!

Mail rules will help some, but please do not plan on it being the panacea for your concern. The spammers are quite sophisticated and will shroud there message in numerous ways.

My ISP(Comcast) uses a mail filter - a part of their service. Otherwise I would receive hundreds of spams every day.
When this (ISP) was still Suscom.net I was able to access this and delete the junk..this was fun in a way..

Follow-up to all who offered help - the mail rules seems to have done the trick, plus I blocked about 20 senders. I'm still going to put salt in DH's suger for the next few months for opening the door to this stuff.
