can't open email

I get some emails i cannot open and it says :This file does not have a program associated with it to perform this action. Create an association in the Folder options control panel. I go to folder options and cannot see anything that I can do there. does anyone know how to fix this ?

Emails shouldnt be opening a program other than a typical email display. Normally most would suspect there's something fishy if that happens.

What email program do you use and whom are the emails from.. One specific Friend? Which isp?
Can you describe anything special about these emails ?

Are you in fact talking about the email itself or an attachment perhaps? If you receive an attached .pps file for example and do not have MS Powerpoint installed you cannot view that attachment.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? If you are talking about sending someone an article, you can often open the specific article in your browser, and then copy and paste the URL into an email. Whether you can do this will depend on what paper you are talking about, but it's generally no big deal. Below, for example, is a link to a NYTimes article about Chinese hacking of U.S. computers. Try running the repair feature. It's under Tools or Help (I don't have access to Outlook right now). You'll need the original disc to run it. If you haven't, check for any updates too.

Aha, that was why I couldn't find it in my GW email. Maybe you have to have your messages turned on here to be able to send them too. I'm not really sure about that.

It's just email from friends. Some have an ATT. but never try to open that. I click on the clip then open but it won't open.And I do have power point.

If that's a paperclip you're clicking on that is an Attachment...

Save the Attachment, Scan it with your virus checker... After your Save the file right click on it and go to Open with, it will have a list of the programs you have on your computer that will open the file...

When it says: "This file does not have a program associated with it to perform this action. Create an association in the Folder options control panel." here's what you do... First check out the file extension, .jpg, gif or whatever... Then go to Control Panel, Folder Options, File types... Scroll down the list until you find the right file Extension, left click on it once then left click on Change and pick a program to open that file, making sure you have a check mark in Always use the Selected program to open this kind of file then click OK... You'll only have to do that once with each different file Extension you run across... ( It's best to select a program that's listed under Recommended and usually the first one on the list is the one you have set to open other such files. )

Now then, if you go through all that and that particular file still does not Open it probably means that there is something wrong with that file or you have no programs that can open it and no matter what you do you will not be able to open that file... Good luck!

Oh, if you don't have any programs listed under Recommended you'll have to guess at which one to select, that can be dangerous and you don't want a check mark in Always use the Selected program to open this kind of file until you KNOW that program will Open THAT file...

I am having the same problem with a power point attachment that I can't open. I have followed ritotay's instructions with no results. I am still getting the message "this file does not have a program.....". I have Power point installed; it is showing a shortcut on my desktop. What am I doing wrong? Is it the way I've installed the program? This happens each time I receive a power point attachment....annoying to feel so stupid !

I had the same problem. If you have Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 2003. You have to do a registry fix.

Shyam Pillai has developed a small (128 KB) program that will correct the problem and allow you to open presentation file attachments directly from your email in Outlook Express.

You can download the fix. It only takes about 20 seconds and you do not have to reboot. Then you should be able to open up all PPS attachments from your email.

When I open my e-mail (outlook) Powerpoint 2007 immediately opens. These are not powerpoint files. No matter what the extension powerpoint opens and nothing there. Have gone thru many help and forums and have found nothing. Would appreciate it if anyone knows the problem to post. Thank you!

If I understand you correctly you are saying that when you launch Outlook, Powerpoint opens? Are you getting any dialog boxes advising that you need to take some action, like activation? Does it happen if you open from your programs list rather than a desktop shortcut?
