Toshiba Satellite M115 laptop No Sound

Just recently I lost sound, totally dead. I've checked the users manual and the only thing I can find is to make sure it's not muted and check that the volume is turned up. Suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated. Thanks

Have you gone into the device manager to see if the sound is disabled or if a conflict exists?

Do you need instructions to check this?

Have you rebooted since you lost your sound. Try turning it off and leaving it sit for a couple of mins, then restart. Do you get any of the startup music(sounds). When strange happenings occur, the first thing I ask is if a person has an up to date virus program, a good firewall or router and also if the clean the machine for spyware and do a system clean

That is the one thing I have noticed since scouring the net and asking everyone and anyone in the know their opinions on who makes the most well put together laptop. It seems that many folks are extreemely loyal to one particular product or brandname, but one brandname doesn't seem to be conclusive over the other. The Imac sure has its very loyal following, as well as Dell and Toshiba and, another brand rapidly picking up steem is HP, especially their DV6000 and DV9000 lines. I am beginning to conclude that at this point, figure out exactly how much of a laptop you need and can afford, paying particular attention to Size of Hard Drive, How much Memory (RAM), and third, how much graphics card, and lastly and most important, the CPU. I have concluded that the duel core processor is important, as it is essentially two processors stapped together, and the OS uses one for certain functions and the other for certain functions, and most importantly, only one is being used and powered when both are not needed, saving battery power and overall electric consumption. Another rule of thumb, to save money, get the base core duo (1.60GHz, I believe), and skip the upgrade on the CPU and get 2G's of RAM, as your CPU runs out of cache space for storage, it will draw from Ram, and adding RAM is much cheaper than adding a high end CPU. Bottom line, I'm waiting for some hot sales. Another thing to think about is size, and yeah, folks, size does matter... Most of the 17" models that I've tried out in the stores just seem too damn big and heavy, especially if your going to use the thing as a LAP top... it's just too damn big for my lap, and I have a big lap at that... the 12" is just too small, especialy for viewing movies, etc. That's the one thing that turned me off from the DELL XPS 1200... hot looking little machine... just too small. 14-15" seems just right for my taste. It seems to me that all these machines (Toshiba, Dell, HP and many others) are all beginning to become clones of one another. Seems they are are made in China nowadays, and no one has yet to convince me overwhelmingly that one is better than the other...

I was in this thread looking for something on HP, didn't find it here or in a search. For those in the know on HP an easy one. Is the Pavillion model consistent in the general quality of the case and keyboard - a shared quality? I ask because I like the one below but can't find it locally... I can find Pavillion at my Discount Store (BJs - where my last 3 laptops were purchased) and so I can to a "look-see" at other versions of the Pavillion. Something else that bothers me is the physical size (it is a 17.3" and will be used to move from room-to-room, not for travel) Item Dimensions L x W x H 3.10 x 22 x 13.60 inches Forget the confusion of the listed LWH... the 3.1 must be how thick it is, can it be that thick? A compact desk top computer box may be no more than 5" thick. My current Toshiba and most others I see in the store are just over 1" thick, maybe 1.5" but nothing near 3". The specific machine I'm targeting is: HP Pavilion G7-2220us 17.3-Inch Laptop Sorry for any typos, basically is the Pavilion an HP line with similar physical look/touch? And what about the thickness?

Thanks all, I have ordered from both TigerDirect (mostly in my days of build your own from motherboard up) and Newegg. They have always delivered on component parts, may have even purchased some systems). I don't travel much anymore, still I like the idea of downsizing to no more than a 14" screen... the 13.3 looks attractive too. Then when at home, I use a Samsung SyncMaster LCD and full keyboard. My driving reason for looking continues. I am still using the troubled Gateway - subject of another post that I haven't visited lately - and last night when I shut down I first noticed I couldn't access my "Maxtor USB HDD" to do a data backup, I gave the shut down command anyway. The computer again hung up, but rather than force a manual power down I went to bed. This morning when I got to the Computer it had shut down. I hit the power button and it started what looked like a normal boot then hung with the (light) "blue screen of death". I decided to just ignore and go about some other work, but did put the Gateway recovery CD in the bay. I noticed the CD indicator come of briefly, but nothing more happened. Then, perhaps 3 to 5 minutes later, the computer booted.. and I am now using. Does this behavior suggest other than hardware problems? I had concluded the computer has an intermittent problem with the the internal HDD. Sorry for changing the direction of this thread, but it all hangs together in my mind.

I turn my volume full on at times by accident. That crazy little recessed thumb wheel on the side of the laptop that I can never find in the dark.

I did a reboot and the sound came back for a while but then later I lost it. Did another reboot and it came back. I always get start-up music and "you've got mail" when I check AOL mail. My virus protection expired several weeks ago and I haven't renewed it yet. Is there some cleanup I can do prior to renewing my virus protection? I didn't notice this problem until I changed my power options to go into standby when I close the lid of the laptop. I checked device manager and everything seems ok.

You really shouldnt be online if you dont have virus protection. Its like driving a car with no brakes. Undoubtedly your system has one or more viruses.
You might want to do a google search for "Free Avast". It is free. Before you do anything, do a search for "free online virus scan". Trend Micro should show up. Run that, then download and install Avast.

Thanks Genes, your advice worked perfectly. I had several viruses and 58 cookies that were tracking my Internet use. My laptop came loaded with Micro Trend and it's now expired. I keep getting pop ups to renew. Is free Avast as good as Micro Trend or should I eventually be looking at upgrading?

I would say Avast is as good as many others and it is free. as well as one from AVG. Give it a shot. If you dont like it, you can always go back to Trend Micro. Also, if you dont have a Firewall installed give a look at ZoneAlarm (also free). Some anti Spyware programs available (free) are Spybot Search and destroy, AdawareSE Personal and SpywareBlaster (which runs in the background stopping spyware from loading. Make sure SpywareBlaster is updated every couple of days to get new signatures. The others, update each time before using.

I tried ZoneAlarm but had to remove it because it interferred with my router firewall and I couldn't access the Internet. I loaded SpywareBlaster ok but how do I update every couple days to get new signatures? What are new signatures?

I tried the old Sygate personal firewall.
By far, one of the nicest I could find out of the popular freeware firewalls for an XP application.

They sold it to symatech I think. But the old version still works great!

When you open Spywareblaster, click on the update button. New signatures are all the new spyware that the program looks for. New stuff every couple of days. When the new update goes through, a window will come up. Below "Quick Tasks" , click on enable all protection. Do this everytime you update. If you are using a router no need for a firewall. As I mentioned in one of the first posts, a firewall OR a router

Works great. Am I correct in thinking that Spywareblaster doesn't stop spyware from getting on my computer but once it's there the program will detect it and then delete it?

It stops most from loading on the computer, that is why you have to update all the time. Its good to have one of the other spyware programs to clean out the ones that might have slipped by
