mbam, ad-aware, superantispyware

This is not a problem but rather an observation that puzzles me...

I use all the three products mentioned above regularly... but, I have noticed that MBAM never detects anything while the other two detect stuff in my cookies somewhat often. How come MBAM seems not to detect these while Ad-aware & SAS do? Ad-aware once even detected a Trojan that MBAM did not. Has anyone else noticed this too? I am running MBAM 1.51.2.1300

Is MBAM not as good as it used to be or what?

Observations:

1. I quit using Ad-aware years ago...thought it was unreliable

2. MBAM has saved me more times than I can think of. I don't even know if it cares about cookies.

3. SAS and CCleaner do a great job of taking care of the tracking cookies.

Nothing is perfect. That is why tiered detection is recommended. Stick with both products is my advice.

invasive??? I want spyware to do it's job, have np's with it, anytime you are on the web, whatever site you go to including this one spyware/cookies is loading into your PC,and all this does is slow down your PC...don't know bout you but I want rid of it ASAP...and Ad Aware was too slow for me....

Hi ravencajun, When the old AdAware went down I had no idea where to go, it all was so confusing to me, so I decided to put the new AdAware in to see how it would do. It has done well up until now and this is the first time that I have had compatiblity Issues with Spybot Search And Destroy. I have had AdAware several months now. This is really odd, cause I would have thought there would have been problems before now. Do I just take AdAware out using Add/Remove Programs? Will that get it all out? How is the install for superantispyware, is it hard to download or is it a simple install? What is your personal opinion of superantispyware? Pros & Cons. If you don't mind doing that for me? I just installed Spybot with the download file spybotsd160.exe. When Spybot loads, I see the following: -- Slugmeter labeled "Loading Spybot" -- "Legal stuff" message box: "If you remove advertisement robots with this program, you may not be allowed..." -- "Confirm" message box: "Spybot - Search & Destroy has detected that you have the following products installed: Lavasoft AdAware. This may cause incompatibilites; for more information, click Yes to visit our website, Ignore to no longer show this warning, or just Cancel." Here's the text from the website: "Compatibility: If you have the AdAware option to scan inside archives enabled, AdAware may find files in the Spybot-S&D folder. Spybot-S&D does not contain any spyware, but it creates backups of everything you fix (until you remove those backups from the Recovery list), and AdAware complains about these backups. luis_pr, Please follow through with Zep's and Ravens suggestions and get the help you need. This virus is advanced and has recognized MBAM as a threat to it's existence on your computer and can leave you wide open to much more severe infections that can not only render your computer useless, yet also invite other infections that can steal your personal information and also get into your acct's if you do any online banking, shopping, etc. "Search Redirect Virus". What makes this virus annoying is not the fact you are getting redirected all the time, but the fact it makes itself impossible to remove with your conventional anti virus. It does this by infecting your system in a different way to a normal virus. Normally, a virus would install software or run a process, which can harm your system but your anti virus picks up on this before the infection gets a hold. However, the Redirect Virus manages to infect a system file, allowing to cause the redirects but also evade detection. The system file in question is one used by the operating system to handle redirect requests. Such requests are made whenever you click a search result link. This is a normal process. However, once the virus has infected your system, it manipulates this process to redirect you to random advertisements and sites that are of the highest nature for more infections. bbbluz

Yeah, I too started wondering if it just does not care about cookies. The only thing that concerned me was when Ad-aware picked up the Trojan and MBAM did not.

That incident started me wondering if I should continue running checks with MBAM. I still do but decided to ask around...

Just be sure that you update MBAM before running a scan.

also remember that some programs pick up things that are false positives, other programs have been updated to know that is a false positive so will not alert to it. Could be what is happening.

I too quit using Ad Aware years ago when it changed over.

I do still use superantispyware and malwarebytes regularly but always update prior to doing the full scan.

It wouldn't hurt anything to keep AA just as long as it is configured on-demand and not real-time. However, it has not been as progressive and reliant as it use to be.

At one time AA was the flagship of malware detection followed by Spybot. Then some years ago both of them started to lag behind other detection applications and now they are far behind.

To this day I have SB on this system just as an additional tier of detection. Though it now has a beta in the wild,it hasn't had release version for almost 3 years.

MBAM doesn't detect tracking cookies, because they are just that: cookies. All sites give cookies, and they aren't really infectious.

For additional protection, I highly recommend SpywareBlaster, version 4.5

Turning off tracking cookie checking is a configuration option in SuperAntiSpyware. But imagine that will save only a few seconds on total time to scan completion.
Running a cookie cleaner like CCleaner before virus scans will keep the found warnings window less scary looking from all the tracking cookie finds.:)

By default SuperAntiSpyware default configuration is 'only scans known file types' & few times I've noticed when that option is unchecked the computers anti-virus program will additionally pop some extra warnings on the second scan when SAS touches some of the bad guy type files - but it adds alot of time to the scan completion.

I just cleaned one reoccurring virus .. it was acrobat.com would ask to update.. and that was the offending party. So every update... scan again hah.
