This could be long... woke at 330am to flashing lights. Front porch light, fluorescent mini twin tube thing, has decided its disco time. Windows has many programs that run as 'Services' in the background. They all have Start/Stop buttons on them but pressing that Stop or Start, might make an UtOh. Some will start at boot others start only when something manually triggers it. Some of the Services are important things windows can't live without. One way to access 'Services' is the 'Computer Management' window. You should look around in there, & Manage things. Interesting place. Its Event Viewer will solve all your window problem... heh/ at least tell you the UtOh's. -- Disk Management is there, it'll help you defrag or change a drive letter. -- Device Manager is there too, look and fix hardware problems or update a driver. Computer Management window, I look in its event viewer often when problems arise, always in hope the link there that will take me directly to windows support will have the magical fix. Sometimes it does, sometimes not. ~ Yes I have installed and have used AdAware2007. Used AdAwareSE for many years and when the newer 2007 version came out I immediately started using it. I have never thought of 2007 version as much different from AdAwareSE. Just a newer version - To me its the same old thing, only it does start as a service -- and, for the Free version there's really no reason for that service to always be running in the background as the free AdAware doesn't do full time spyware protection like the paid version does. Might as well set that Service to Manual so it doesn't start up except on demand. Saves a small amount of memory by not running. If I remember right, frp, back in the day.... I dunno, a yr ago? .. AdAware said uninstall SE completely before installing 2007. Uninstall is a simple no brainer from the Add/Remove in control panel. No special considerations needed. Install of AdAware2007 is about as complicated as making sure you get the Free Version otherwise its a no brainer too. Sounds like you have been happy with SE... If I were you I'd just unistall SE (if its the Free version), and install the Free verion AdAware 2007. Leave the service running always in the background ? really doesn't use a lot of RAM/memory, but it uses some so its a coin toss whether change the service to manual or not. If you dont have another program doing full time spyware protection, you should consider finding one. My choice is Windows Defender, its free and simple. , please

I assume with the paid version you are getting automatic updates? Actually, I have both the free and pro versions each on a different computer. I updated both of them (manually) earlier this week after having updated on Jan 3 as well, but received no warning about lack of support for either free or pro versions as of yet. I'm not suggesting your information is wrong. Maybe they're just giving us a grace period of sorts before finally pulling the plug ?? Or perhaps mikie is right and it will only be the free version left unsupported ? I'll likely uninstall it if/when one or both versions loses support. Better to have loved and lost...... :-( Scott

I had the same question as Marian. I followed your instructions, Mikie, but I'm still stumped. I clicked the little + sign and a list appeared, all with boxes. I clicked on the Tracking Cookie box at the top, and it automatically checked all the boxes below. So far so good. But when I clicked on Remove, they disappeared and were replaced by the same Tracking Cookie with + sign. I repeated the above steps (more than once), but we seem to be in a never-ending loop.

The label says it has 512 MB of memory. I'm not sure which memory this is referring to, but if it is the RAM on the motherboard, it could use an upgrade. Windows XP likes to have 2 Gigabyte (2 GB) or more. You are using a wireless router on a DSL sevice. Make sure that your wireless router is secured so that someone else within range can't horn in and ride piggyback on your connection for free. The more computers using the connection, the slower it gets for any one computer. The next potential bottle neck is the DSL service. If this is over a phone line, it may not be a large jump in speed over a standard dial-up service. A good connection does have marked improvement in speed, but a troublesome connection looses much speed advantge. Consider taking the computer to a shop or friend and try on their lines. Another problem, if over a phone line, is a noisy line. Thw phone company can test your phone line for quality. Make sure that you tell the technicam that this line will be used for internet service. If over a phone line, another bottleneck can be the phone company. It may not have installed equipemnt capable of high speed data transfer. If you have a friend who has a high speed cable connection with a wireless router, you may want to try your computer on his connection. Have the computer checked out at a computer shop to discover if it is the computer or the DSL service to your house.
