video and game lag

When I am watching videos(for example from Youtube), or playing games, I get a lag that lasts up to a minute. The video part starts dragging behind the audio...then after a while it catches up.

I don't know enough to know what info to give here, or what system I should be checking. I have high speed internet, so I know that downloading isn't the problem. This problem started in the last month or so, and seems to be getting worse. I have done a virus scan, and that's okay.

Any ideas about where I should start troubleshooting ? Thanks

    Right click my computer tell us the processor information and the amount of ram you have installed. How much free space is on your C Drive.

    Have you noticed this has just started recently or has it been on going?

    guitar hero sucks! LOL :P halo is a great choice though - I host 8-12 person halo 3 tournaments in my basement, LOL. unreal tournament 3 and street fighter 4 are fanTASTIC too. best multiplayer game by FAR is halo, though, we LOVE halo. you guys should play with me and my friends on live! consider yourselves challenged >:D you should also try elder scrolls 4: oblivion and the first fable game (we don't like to talk about the second one), too, for really gorgeous single player rpg/adventure type games. I've gotten completely immersed in these for MANY hours straight. video games were my first love, before plants; I don't play them as much as I used to but I'll never outgrow them! :P regarding that red ring - it happens to everyone, rigo. it's just known that if you buy a 360, at some point it's going to ring - it's happened to me and everyone I know at least once. it sucks, but microsoft has been really good about replacing them. I did actually fix my friend's out of warranty 360 using the penny trick - you have to open it up (requires tools and knowing exactly where the little latch type things are) and strip it all the way down, and take the board off the back plate. there are these little foam spacers that keep the board off the plate. you take two pennies and wrap them well in electrical tape, and replace each spacer with the little penny package. put it all back together again and turn it on and it usually works :) sometimes you have to do the towel trick to get it to realize it's been fixed - something about overheating it makes it reset so it doesn't think it's broken anymore. hope this helps! :P I'd fix it for you guys if I didn't live over two thousand miles away. Is there any objection from the contributors to making this video available on DVD to clubs, organizations, and individuals (who can't view it online)? It looks really good on my LCD TV. I could do this at my cost.     Anyone have to do video games for employee training?

    It may not be an HR person pushing the games. It is entirely possible that some executive in the company heard about them and is telling HR that all the employees have to "play" the games. These "games" are apparently the latest buzzword, and execs get street cred when they can brag/boast they, too, are using the latest and greatest thing in their company. I don't work in HR, but my position requires me to work very closely with our HR department, and you would not believe some of the things the upper echelon has told them to do. Some of those things would have broken the law, and HR has had a hard time reining a few VPs in. What they get from these games is a bunch of statistics, which may be used to pinpoint employee weaknesses so they can get better training, or to pinpoint employee weaknesses so they can be let go, or which the execs can't interpret so it is all for nothing. One thing, though. I would never, ever, put company software on my phone. If the company wants me to use software that requires a touch screen, the company needs to provide the touch screen. Unless they want to pay for my phone and phone bill, my private phone remains private. Asking employees to put company-provided software on their personal devices crosses a line for me. First, it's a "game." Then it becomes requiring the employee to use their own device to do work. Not a good situation.

    The 3 GB's all have hand held DS or DSI's. From what I've seen they played the heck out of them when they got them for Christmas and now they mainly get played in the car on trips? When they bring them here now, they aren't played with a lot, in fact sometimes I wonder why they even bring them here! LOL Guess its like I said in the car to occupy themselves. Although I do know DS and Maddie love to play "I Spy" while they are making the long 4 hour trip between them. My kids had the Nintendo and Super Nintendo, they played them more in the winter than spring,summer and fall.

    After SuperAntispware has run, lets continue to clean the computer by running ccleaner see the link and click in the green area on that page where it says "Download latest version" top left of page.

    After that has run click Start>programs>accessories>System Tools now chose disk clean up let it run, now choose disk Defragmenter this may take some time if you have not run it for a while.

    Following all these steps may take a little time, but will do wonders for pc and may resolve the problem, if not then we can move to other problems knowing we have a clean pc..

    Zep, I appreciate the help. I'm running the SuperAntispyware now...I've got more than 400 adware tracking cookies so far !!! I have free norton virus and spyware protection from my service provider , so I thought I was okay from that. Never assume, I guess. This scan is going to take a while...I just wanted to let you know that I'm working on it. :) Thanks

    Well, I cleaned lots of junk off the computer, but the its still running slow. Since I found lots of adware when I thought I was protected, maybe I should run a different virus scan. I guess I'll continue this tomorrow.

    Looks like you removed a lot of stuff probably mostly tracking cookies really no way to keep all that off it is just a matter of running these tools every so often, hope you ran ccleaner and a defrag.. We need to find out what is running on the pc, how many process's press ctr>alt>delete click the process tab let us know how many are running and what they are a screen shot would be helpful that way we can tell you what does not have to run on start up and I bet that is part of problem- Lets check the ram amount by..Right click My computer now choose properties tell us how much ram is installed.... Don't worry about virus yet

    Forgot to tell you Please un-install SuperAntispyware, since we are looking at what is running on the pc there is no reason for that to be running right now.

    1 Anti virus
    1 Spyware program
    1 firewall

    You didn't say what kind of high speed internet you have. If it is satellite, I'm not surprised by the lags. The one I have has been very slow since about mid-December.

    Wow...65 processes showed up !!! At least I assume that's a lot. lol I took a screen shot(actually, I had to take 2), but it's really late, and I'll have to figure out how to post it tomorrow night.

    My processor is Intel Pentium 1.73 GHz, 0.99 GB of RAM.

    I do not want to get into a ram thing yet but my computer should be reporting 1.00GB, NOT .99GB. This can mean 1/10 of the ram is corrupted that's like 1 chip on a module and this can cause problems. That does appear to be a lot of process running, I run 36. I will look for a memory test, I like memtest86 but it has to be run from a floopy disk. I would also check your add/remove programs for Items programs you are not using look for other odd things too, google tool bar, realplayer, anything with myway, myweb nero, roxie, my internet,uninstall these if found.

    fwiw
    myVista laptop is pretty typical of the low end Vista laptops and graphic's has 128mb of video mem, apparently bare minimum for Vista. Plus 1gb of ram.... and shares another 200 to 300 mb, of system memory with the video card on demand & depending on themes and appearance choices. It always was saying .99Gb of ram. I've changed it to 2gb of corsair and it now says 2039mb Ram with not much 'makeup' applied.

    Well, I seem to be lost now !!! I just tried to watch a video...and it still lagged. I was watching the CPU usage when it was playing...and it was between 90 and 100 percent. I don't know if that is normal or not, but it sounds high. Could this problem be solved with more RAM ? I've had this laptop for at least 6 months, and when it was new it worked fine...so obviously something is slowing it down.

    I checked add/remove, and there didn't seem to be anything suspicious there...but what do I know !! LOL I did remove a bunch of old games and stuff and freed a lot of space on my hard drive.

    I did what you suggested Mikie...it was already checked. Thanks !

    I don't think you need more ram I have the same amount my cpu usage stays from 5-12% when looking at the youtube videos.

    What is the cpu usage when you are not doing anything?

    And in the task manager last Item: System Idle Process, That should be high 97 to 99%

    Run some of the scans in the link given you may also consider posting a hijackthis log at that site so you can get a better Idea what's going on, Starting to sound like something is on the computer causing that high cpu usage...

    Yay Zep !!! I ran Hijack this and there was a danger entry. That one has been fixed. It also said there were some suspicious entries, and that I should post my log on the forum. I hope I get some sort of reply. I'll post it here too.

    After getting rid of that one 'whatever', things seem better. I watched a 10 minuted video, and it didn't lag once!!!

    Thanks for all your help. This has made me wiser, and saved me some money.

    I posted the log at the forum that was in the instructions in the link you posted. I'd just as soon take your advice.

    Before I start changing too much more, should I create a restore point, if that's what it's called. I know one of the scans I ran yesterday did that. That way I can go back if I run into trouble with the Highjack this stuff ??

    I have Yahoo email and online protection (Norton- for what it's worth)throught my service provider. I would like to keep the google toolbar and ditch the yahoo. Can I do that from the HJT log ?

    You posted the log at the forum can not offer advice until you are done do not un-install or install anything until you are done there, it will change the hijackthis log and cause a lot of confusion they will direct you....Also you may have other malware that has to be dealt with by an expert......

    I did not expect to see a hijackthislog, this is a powerful tool and not to be used unless under supervision, please do use it to remove anything unless under the guidance of a malware expert..

    HJT was the next step after virus and spyware scans. I'm not going to delete anything on my own though. I don't know enough to be dangerous. ha

    Be patient the malware forums are busy but you will get a reply--You will be asked to run special scans and post the logs of those scans along with another HJT Log...Good luck and post back with the results....

    So far so good, as you can see in the log Norton has taken over the machine with all the entries, if you decide to remove it please use this tool in the link, you will need to install an Anti Virus and firewall I use avg free and comodo firewall, others will recommend also. Let us know when you finish there.

    Remember that I had almost 70 processes running...I've deleted Norton and a bunch of Acer stuff that hadn't been used since 2006, and now I'm down to 46 !!! I've downloaded AVG free, and Comodo. Now I'm about to defrag again and do another virus scan.

    I can't tell you how happy I am. It's so much quicker now. Thank you, thank you, thank you !!!
