SUPERAntispware Review..

Hi All,

I decided to start a new thread, even though I posted this on the Internet Security (Update) thread. Just ignore the post that I put on that thread, I will put my question here. Sorry cricketm, I didn't want to take over your thread.

Here is my question:

Hi Everyone,

I went searching for reviews on SuperAntiSpyware and came up with this.

Verdict

Effective anti-spyware tool, but too many functions have to be done manually.

Can you tell me more about SuperAntiSpyware? I am sending you the link for this review, so that you may look it over and tell me if this is true or not. I respect your input on this matter. I have the free AdAware SE Personal and didn't realize it was no longer being supported. I would appreciate more information about this other software and your comments from what this article is saying.

Like everyone else I am looking for the best Free Spyware out there.

Thank You for your help, it is much appreciated.

Real-Time Blocking of threats! Prevent potentially harmful software from installing or re-installing! --->Only on the professional Version which is free to try for a limited time.

The free version is basically a cleaning tool one of the best and yes to use it correctly there are manual functions to do like up-dating definitions an others, a lot of malware removers use this tool first to clean up a pc then proceed to the more difficult virus/ Trojan/ Worm/ removals that need to be done..

This is how the tool should be handled when you run it, is not meant to run on the computer for protection unless you get the professional version.

    Download Superantispyware.

    http://www.superantispyware.com/

Once downloaded and installed update the definitions
and then run a full system scan quarantine what it finds!

    * Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
    * An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
    * If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting

"Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from

    here.)

    http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html

    * Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
    * Click the Scanning Control tab.
    * Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    o Close browsers before scanning.
    o Scan for tracking cookies.
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
    * Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
    * Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
    * On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
    * On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
    * Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
    * After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
    * Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
    * A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to

    return to the main menu.
    * If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
    * To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
o Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text file.

    "LOL" Hi Zep516,

You are sure fast, once again you caught me by surprise. You already copied and pasted it on this thread. I must be awfully slow for you to beat me back here. "Smiles"

Ok, I understand what you are saying. What is the basic difference between SuperAntispyware and the old AdAware SE Personal edition of course other than the fact that AdAware no longer supports the personal edition? Or can you compare the two?

I really liked the free AdAware and I am looking for something that is equal or better, that is why I am asking you what makes the SuperAntispyware so different or is it?

    thirdfrt!!!

AdAware2007 is still free...Same thing as the old AdAwareSE only improved.
They discontinued AdAware SE Free , and are using the SE branding as a Remote/Server version for a couple hundred bucks.

Really can't compare the 2 as I said superantispyware is a major cleaning tool & targets different things, I like to run it once a month with those instructions I gave that are from a malware removal forum. The logs it produces help Malware removal experts determine what course to take on other removals, don't get me wrong everyone should run it, it will remove a lot more then AdAware could, that's the difference and the definitions file it uses is bigger so run it once a month or more---Spybot is good to have that is also on demand scanner unless you run the Teatimer function then it becomes realtime that is "running in the background", I like to run spywareblaster , and spywareguard, and I run spybot with teatimer enabled ----Once a month depending where I surf and that is something I watch I run the superantispyware, do disk clean up in windows and defrag.

    Hi Mikie,

Are you using the new AdAware 2007? If so how do you like it? Does it take more resources than the old AdAware SE personal edition? If so by how much or do you know?
One other thing, do you have to remove the older version first before you download the new 2007 version?

    Hello Zep516,

Thank you for all the information you have sent me. I will certainly keep this in mind. Like I said earlier I really liked AdAware but I am open to something newer if it is better. I will save your instructions.

Spybot is good to have that is also on demand scanner unless you run the Teatimer function then it becomes realtime that is "running in the background", I like to run spywareblaster , and spywareguard, and I run spybot with teatimer enabled

I have Spybot Search and Destroy plus, I have spywareblaster installed. What is teatimer and where can I find it? Never heard of it before. AdAware was always easier for me to follow than Spybot but, I still use it and update all of the definitions too.

See the link for Tea Timer, I have to tell I never saw AdAware remove anything but tracking cookies, and the new one runs all the time in the background the old one did not run it was on demand scanner meaning you actually started it yourself, with those things you have installed I think you will be good to go, those are the 3 things I run spywareblaster, spywareguard, teatimer, avg anti virus, and comondo firewall. That's enough for me never been infected...And the special scans every so often..

You can simply install this program then just look for updates or run. What is so labour intensive in that? Zep (and others no doubt) elects to modify the program for his taste but for the vast majority that is not necessary. If it was necessary the program writers would have written it that way surely.

Google then read some of the threads in geek forums, there is a huge positive response to this new program

I just ran adAware. I've seen some say its bloated now but to me its the same old thing as SE.

It runs as a service now, which is a good thing - because they set that service to automatic the service is always started and running in the background but not doing anything. They've probably set it to automatic for the Vista user who think to run it with administrator rights, which is needed to start the service in Vista.

Simply change the adAware 'Service to start manually - and no more module running in the background. Then it only runs 'On Demand'. No big deal to set a service to manual for most people.

AdAware is one of my old trusted favorites, i'm very used to it. It gets updated and run when I think of it.
-- I dont think AdAware nor Spybot S&D which I run both occasionally for a checkup, Spybot Immunizer, which is a very good thing, thats the real reason I keep spybot installed. They find session cookies if I forget to flush cache, thats about it.

SuperAntiSpyware I keep trying it various ways and dont really think I like it. I'd have to start it now and wait an hour for it to finish to refress my memory as to why.
The best I see does an exact duplicate of what the above do, with the exception of it duplicates its findings, maybe to lead you to believe its doing a better job finding more items? Reports .dat data that will clear with a reboot anyways.
Plus its awfully slow the way its been written.

or you could just run a dual boot with linux and not have to run virus or spyware protection.

Dint fix a paragraph above, mean toooo...

I dont think AdAware nor Spybot S&D which I run both occasionally for a checkup have found anything since I started using the free 'Windows Defender' which I keep running in the background. Its free for XP and comes installed with Vista. Almost does firewall duty in the way it reports new stuff if you set it to allow you to participate in reporting the good/bad guys.
Spybot Immunizer, which is a very good thing, thats the real reason I keep spybot installed. AdAware/Spybot will find session cookies if I forget to flush cache, thats about it.

I'd recommend the 'Windows Defender' to anybody that does not run a background full time running spyware type program. It watches for the trojans and some other badies too and set to run at midnite for a scan or once a week, whatever you want and forget about it.

Everybody recommends what they use.. its all good stuff. Well the most mentioned stuff is good anyhow.

Even when you dual boot any unix variant with windows - the Windows part still needs spyware stuff. Too bad you cant just single boot unix without the need for windows.

Mikie you have answered my issue with AdAware2007. I found it used considerably more resources than the SE version when I installed it long ago. I had not bothered to check that version 2007 runs as a service, that would account for the difference. Thanks for that.

Now I have and am comfortable with superantispyware I will stay there though, it seems to suit my needs.

Is there such a thing as having too much protection? I have the following.

    CCleaner
    Comodo Firewall
    SuperAntispyware
    Spyware Blaster

Do I need Windows Defender? Mikie made it sound a very easy program to use and thats what I need, and will it run with the Comodo Firewall?

Mikie, where is the setting to "Simply change the AdAware Service to start manually"??

gillian, yes you can run windows defender as Comodo Firewall program by itself does not have resident antispyware.

AdAware2007 Service is accessable by right clicking myComputer and choosing Manage. Expand the Services then double click on AdAware and change the drop down box there from Automatic to Manual. Press stop if you want.
If you run Vista, then to start AdAware you would right click and choose run as administrator. XP it just starts the service when running AdAware by normal means. The service will stay running for a period of unused time after you close adaware, or simple be closed after your next boot.

Thanks for that Mikey. I've been having alot of Conflict Issues slowing things down, and this just might be one of them.

Google then read some of the threads in geek forums, there is a huge positive response to this new program,

    Owbist,

I will read more about perhaps I am missing something. Thanks for your help / input..

Really I guess there is now set procedure for running and installing this stuff and it is more what works for the particular user.

Zep wote:- Really I guess there is now set procedure for running and installing this stuff and it is more what works for the particular user.

Absolutely Zep, I wish at times I were more adventuresome or curious. But mostly I am content to run programs with the default settings. Sure, I probably miss an awful lot of good stuff but that is the nature of me :-)

Tried Super Anti-spyware from a suggestion on this thread. Didn't seem any better than SpyBot. Now am using AVG anti-spyware and PC Tools Threatfire. The combination works best for my Vista Home.

    Mikie,

Did you install AdAware 2007 and did you have to delete the older AdAware SE Personal before you downloaded it? Did you find it to be a resource hog?

I am asking these questions because I have AdAware SE Personal. I have always used AdAware SE Personal and never had any problems with it.

You said this and it confused me:
AdAware2007 Service is accessable by right clicking myComputer and choosing Manage. Expand the Services then double click on AdAware and change the drop down box there from Automatic to Manual. Press stop if you want.
If you run Vista, then to start AdAware you would right click and choose run as administrator. XP it just starts the service when running AdAware by normal means. The service will stay running for a period of unused time after you close adaware, or simple be closed after your next boot.

Service is accessable by right clicking myComputer and choosing Manage.

What do you mean by Service?

You said: Expand the services, then double click on AdAware
and change the drop down box there from Automatic to Manual. Press stop if you want.

Are these instructions for AdAware 2007? Press Stop? Is that in 2007?
What is different in 2007 compared to AdAware SE Personal?

I am trying to keep this simple and hope that I have done so.

What I am really trying to do here is do research, to find out if AdAware is the way to go or if SuperAntispyware is the way to go or if there is another one out there that is better than those two, before I make a decision on which one that I want to use on my computer, so please bare with me. I really appreciate yours and everyone elses help here, I really do.

Thank you all for your wonderful input.

This could be long... woke at 330am to flashing lights. Front porch light, fluorescent mini twin tube thing, has decided its disco time.

Windows has many programs that run as 'Services' in the background. They all have Start/Stop buttons on them but pressing that Stop or Start, might make an UtOh.
Some will start at boot others start only when something manually triggers it. Some of the Services are important things windows can't live without.

One way to access 'Services' is the 'Computer Management' window.
You should look around in there, & Manage things. Interesting place. Its Event Viewer will solve all your window problem... heh/ at least tell you the UtOh's. -- Disk Management is there, it'll help you defrag or change a drive letter. -- Device Manager is there too, look and fix hardware problems or update a driver.

Computer Management window, I look in its event viewer often when problems arise, always in hope the link there that will take me directly to windows support will have the magical fix. Sometimes it does, sometimes not.

    ~
Yes I have installed and have used AdAware2007. Used AdAwareSE for many years and when the newer 2007 version came out I immediately started using it.

I have never thought of 2007 version as much different from AdAwareSE. Just a newer version - To me its the same old thing, only it does start as a service -- and, for the Free version there's really no reason for that service to always be running in the background as the free AdAware doesn't do full time spyware protection like the paid version does. Might as well set that Service to Manual so it doesn't start up except on demand. Saves a small amount of memory by not running.

If I remember right, frp, back in the day.... I dunno, a yr ago? .. AdAware said uninstall SE completely before installing 2007. Uninstall is a simple no brainer from the Add/Remove in control panel. No special considerations needed.
Install of AdAware2007 is about as complicated as making sure you get the Free Version otherwise its a no brainer too. Sounds like you have been happy with SE... If I were you I'd just unistall SE (if its the Free version), and install the Free verion AdAware 2007.

Leave the service running always in the background ? really doesn't use a lot of RAM/memory, but it uses some so its a coin toss whether change the service to manual or not.

If you dont have another program doing full time spyware protection, you should consider finding one. My choice is Windows Defender, its free and simple.

    , please

Downloaded, installed SA in on-demand mode. After updating I did a full scan. It reminded me quite a bit of A Squared.

I wasn't impressed nor was I disappointed. Was it super? No. Is it a savior to all our worries regarding malware? No.

Right now my position is SA is just another free viable prophylaxis option for users.

Is there a way to make the icon not show in start bar? I went to start up options in the program, and unclicked it but its still there. Should I unclik it in the computor start up menu?

No icon here. I disabled mine in the Options and the Startup without any negative issues, and it works properly on-demand.
