I have a Cisco router and it automatically set up a guest wifi. I was advised to change their password because it could be know to hackers. When I click on the internet icon on the notification bar it has my main wifi and my guest wifi with the same name followed by guest. You could check that to see if yours is set up. Sorry I can't be more help.

A "guest" connection is simply a second log in to a router. Same router, same wifi signal, just a different password.

If you're not going to be filtering content (something a user with limited skills should stay away from) and if your own PCs aren't "networked" with open access, using the guest feature really doesn't accomplish much. Giving a guest a distinct guest password and then changing it is no different than giving a guest your normal password and then changing it. Although, I guess you can change the guest's password without changing your own (a 2 or 3 minute task for most people).

I don't use the guest feature, I have it turned off.

I didn't do anything to make a guest account, it just did it automatically and asked me to name my wifi and it automatically attached the guest to my name. I would check the router manual index for guest account.

Not all routers do that,some do not have that option.

I like the guest. I let a neighbor use mine when her server was down. I wanted to know what the guest could see of my computer. She just saw a blank screen.

No one uses my PC and I don't need the guest wifi, just did it because it went on automatically and it was another learning experience.

PK: I use my iPad which is the original one with the wifi system I have set up at home. It does not have an internal wifi sytem in it like the newest ones do. I also have an iPhone 4S which has wifi built in it which works almost everywhere I go in my travels away from home and is not dependent on a router.

I have used my iPad in homes that have wifi (guest wifi or not, I don't know)and it works. So, that would mean it has wifi capability.

Does my NetGear N300 wireless router automatically provide wifi to those who visit and need it because they don't have wifi built into their gadget? I don't know. I suspect as Raven eluded it depends.The box doesn't speak to that. And my Comcast guy was here and set it up for me and never asked me about a guest password when we set up the password.

OK, so it's a Netgear router. Now we are getting somewhere :-)

Open your browser and type in 10.0.0.1 (the router interface) and log in with your admin ID and password. Hopefully you have that information. If it is set at the default the ID is admin and the password is password. It's very insecure if those credentials work. Once the interface loads, you will see a graphic titled 'Guest Network'. It will be on the left sidebar as well as inside the page so just click on it.
You need to checkmark the following:
Enable guest network
Enable SSID broadcast
You need to also set the security protocol that the iPad uses. I have standard network devices (no apples) and I use WPA2-PSK [AES]. Enter a passphrase (which becomes the password to connect to the guest network) and hit the big green apply button at the top of the page.

You should now be able to see the guest network on the iPad. Select it and type in the password or passphrase and that's all there is to it.
