Vista up grades to Windows 7

Does anyone know how this works.

I purchased my Vista boxed version (Vista Home Premium) on 4/16/08. From what I read I am not eligible for an up grade to (Windows 7) because of date of purchase it appears eligibility starts if you purchased between June 26, 2009 and March 2010.

If anyone could shed any light it would be appreciated.

If you're not eligible for an upgrade, then you're not...it's that simple. If you want to dump Vista and get Win 7 you'll have to purchase the full version (not an OEM or upgrade) which allows you to install on any computer.

I missed the deadline by about 2 days, called and couldn't talk them into it.

OK. You need to focus on getting windows up date working first before anything, The next thing to try is running System file checker, To run the System File Checker, complete these steps: 1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box. 2. In the results area, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator. You will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue. 3. At the command prompt, type Sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.

Repeat from another thread-- Did I get a scare when I went on my computer. I got all set and turned on my computer as usual. I can't remember if the welcome screen came but I ended up with a black screen with a dialog box saying: C\windows\system 32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on the computer or on a network. Check to make sure the disk is properly inserted or that you are connected to the Internet or your network and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information may have been moved to a different location Then the message disappeared when I clicked OK and a black desktop with white blank pages in place of the icons were there and the start button with a few of the system tray items. I didn't have the option to shut down (that I remember) so pressed the power button and it blinked so I hit it again or I did the Ctrl, Alt, Delete and the computer booted up with the welcome screen and came up normal. WHEW! That is all I need? What do you think that was all about? Could it have been caused by the updates I did yesterday before I shut down? Windows 7 64bit

When evaluating software or hardware, it makes sense to ignore the popular press, especially the tech blogs and to an extent, consumer opinion. Change is difficult for us humans and the early reviews of XP bear it out. Below is a snapshot of cnet's Windows XP review back in 2001. I got to this page using the web archive. Note that cnet bemoans the fact that a user can only load XP on one computer. Really cnet? And note user opinions: 48% disliked XP after its first several months. Microsoft was roundly criticized for not having an OS that would work across all platforms: computer, tablet and mobile phone. Now Win 8 is negatively reviewed for not having a start button. Anyone remember when the criticism was that Windows had a start button? I use Win7 home premium on this computer and Win7 Pro on my daytrading rig. The next computer I buy will have Windows 8. I am sure it will be fine. Here is a link that might be useful: XP back then

I am not sure Azinoh is exactly right. Why wouldn't/couldn't a person buy OEM or upgrade?

When there was the big sale back in the summer I bought Win7 Professional upgrade for delivery October 22nd. Never even had to confirm using one of my XP CDs either because I altered an .ini file so it accepted the beta version I had been running. Totally legal according to MS.

Wouldn't a valid Vista owner have received some kind of coupon at the time of purchase to enable the Win & upgrade?

All my XP copies are OEM and I have shuffled them to different motherboards as the need arose. Buying OEM saves money but Microsoft offers no support, but who needs MS support when anything and everything is online somewhere waiting to be found.

you can most certainly use the upgrade no need to purchase a full copy, Windows secret had a great article about this in a recent newsletter and I posted here about it on the windows 7 thread, look that up. It told exactly what you can do with the upgrade and why most did not need to get the full copy.
