win7 64bit not reading Vista CD

Didn't find info at HP site or my google searches.

New HP laptop Win7 64bit is not reading my CDs with .jpg files burned on an XP machine (~9 years old).

Is this normal?

Not normal. My HP laptop with Win7 64 bit reads cd's created with XP and with Win 98. I don't have any older than that.

Thanks, Raven. I'm sure he's behind on lots of stuff. Early in 2009, I had him change his update settings to notify him of updates, but not automatically download. That was to hold off on sp1 (at a time when I think I read here that folks were having trouble with it - but I didn't follow that topic, so didn't realize sp1 had become a good idea and that sp2 followed). We also set it that way bc. his computer was automatically updating and then rebooting when he was in the middle of doing other things. So this was to allow him to time his own downloads and installations. But he just never thought of it - and I didn't think I needed to keep track for him. I do keep track of his Avast, superantispyware, malwarebyte and spywareblaster. Every now and then when he's done surfing I have him leave out the laptop and go ahead and update and scan. I'll have to keep track of more than that, obviously. I got foxit reader on my ancient laptop in my office and love it. It takes so little room and does what I need quickly. Do you like pdf-xchange viewer more than foxit reader? Or does he need to use firefox to use foxit reader? I installed firefox for him - and set up tabs with the places he likes to go (did that in the summer) - but he hasn't used it. He's a bit resistant to tech changes. He balked when I got Tivo's - although he loves it now. He's a musician - and I got him Protools so he could record the music he wrote. That was over 1 1/2 years ago - and he hasn't learned it yet - he's barely scratched the surface. Last spring he bought an Imac bc. it was better for recording music. And now he's finally setting up his den and equipment. I'm hoping he'll actually learn the software this year. I'll take care of the rest for him so the only learning curve he has is Protools (certainly the most challenging of them all). But I digress. I'll check his other updates and run Secunia - I'm pretty sure I already put that on his computer last year. Thanks. Lynn.

Thanks, Owbist. I tried that yesterday, but nothing changed with WMP. However, I thought it might be a good idea to redo the procedure. Some striking changes occurred this time. All of my WAV files now open in Windows Live Movie Maker. I tried to play a music CD and got the box that said Windows couldn't open the file. When I checked the properties of the music, it shows as a CDA File... (I'm not alarmed - I know there has to be a fix.) OK, I thought... I'll just go back to the Media Features and redo the procedure. However, there are now no check marks in the WMP or Media Center boxes! I record 3 church services a week on this laptop. I take the sound from - I believe it's called a preamp - (signal too strong directly from mixer) and am able to record in Audacity. I now have audio in Audacity whereas I lost it after the defrag. However, the wav files I made from the audacity project files now open in window movie maker and are unplayable... I don't think I will ever defrag this laptop again!!! :)

Found this on another forum which may help\; Microsoft has a free download for Vitural PC. With this program running in your Windows Vista 64 bit environment, you can run a Windows XP 32 bit environment, and launch an MS DOS environment from there. Additionally, you can create as many of these virtual environments as you want. Unfortunately, Microsoft requires you to have both a Windows XP licience iand a Vista Licence if you are going to run both Vista and XP (even with one in the virtual world). If you own a regerestered copy of XP, I'm told that a work around to this potential problem is to reinstall your virtual XP environment when the preceeding one experies it's 30 day registration requirement. Or; Download virtualbox from Sun for free and run a virtual instance of win xp 32bit, win vista 32bit ...I would suspect licencing for whatever os you choose ie XP or Vista would also apply after the trial period. I have never tried this , just reporting what I have found

I am not sure Azinoh is exactly right. Why wouldn't/couldn't a person buy OEM or upgrade? When there was the big sale back in the summer I bought Win7 Professional upgrade for delivery October 22nd. Never even had to confirm using one of my XP CDs either because I altered an .ini file so it accepted the beta version I had been running. Totally legal according to MS. Wouldn't a valid Vista owner have received some kind of coupon at the time of purchase to enable the Win & upgrade? All my XP copies are OEM and I have shuffled them to different motherboards as the need arose. Buying OEM saves money but Microsoft offers no support, but who needs MS support when anything and everything is online somewhere waiting to be found.

Have you tried the CD in another computer to see if it is corrupted? Do other CDs play in the new Win 7 computer?

I did try a music CD as well and nothing happened. Couldn't see a directory or play it.

Today I put a clean CD in; a format menu box popped up; did that. Then dragged some folders to it (using Windows Explorer option). They copied.

Popped out the CD and put in the old "unreadable" one and the burn menu showed again but this time with additional option to view contents, lo, there were all the folders. Why windows explorer couldn't read it before? Now the problem is trying to open a .jpg to view. When I click on one (I use IrfanView) all the filenames turn pale and the CD spins, and spins, and spins. The cursor remains as an hourglass. When I try to close the explorer window a message saying program not responding shows up and I choose end process to get the explorer window to close.

I'm wondering if the old Roxio program I used to burn the CDs is the problem. Don't have Roxio on this computer.

Why use Irfanview? Windows Explorer does an excellent job and in Windows 7 you are offered the choice of extra large icons and it is great. I use large normally but if a few photos are similar then going to the extra large makes it easier on these tired old eye.

Open Windows Explorer (I have an icon permanently on the task bar) by right clicking the Start button and clicking 'Open Windows Explorer'
Click the 'Pictures' folder
Now look in the top right corner for 4 icons. The first one if you hover over it says 'Change your view', click it and select your choice. The extra large is very handy.

Burning either DVDs or CDs is a snap with Windows 7 too

Right, I'm getting used to using the Explorer for viewing photos. Irfan is my default viewer because I am usually doing some editing. Perhaps if I remove that preference Win7 may open the jpg's for viewing on my old cd's?

Neat how Win7 treats the cd like a usb device. That is what I'll be using to burn cd's on this machine.
