Windows Vista Service Pack 2

I was able to restore my computer finally and now internet explorer is acting up and I think its because it wants me to update to internet explorer 8 and I cant because I don't have windows vista service pack 2 which it did before I restored it. But I have tried to do the update which fails and I have tried to go on microsoft download center and it still fails I have also downloaded the tool thats supposed to help it install but nothing is working I want to update my computer to windows 7 when I can afford it but I don't think I will be able to if this package isn't installed because I have tried windows 7 trials which haven't worked someone please help!!

Did you download SP2 as a standalone or try updating your computer from the internet?

If you do not have SP2 you can download it from the MS download centre

When you restored the computer did you take it back to the original factory defaults or use an image you had created at some point?

If it is only IE playing up you could consider another browser like Firefox, Opera, Chrome or any of the others available free

Hi genes, Sorry to barge in here, but I see you're running Vista with SP1. You may want to consider the free SP2 Update for security reasons. I run Vista as well. Found the following in the link below about 1/2 way down the page. "If you're running Windows Vista without any service packs and you're not ready to upgrade to Windows 7, you should install Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2), a free update. Windows Vista SP2 includes support for new types of hardware and includes all of the updates that have been released since Windows Vista SP1." Just click on the Tab that states "Windows Vista SP2" Just under where it states . "Not ready for Windows 7? Get the latest service pack." I'm not ready for Win7 either. I love my Vista! Also, I had the same thing happen to me with the hidden files on desktop. As zep says...Don't delete them! They will disappear once you check 'Hide protected system files'. After much debate, I decided on XP because of software compatibility issues and information sharing between the new computer and the older XP. Both computers are used for work and must work together. I purchased the new computer to upgrade, down-the-line, to Vista. One problem I didn't consider was MS Office. The new machine was only sold with Office 07. The older machine has Office 03. All Word docs have to be saved at 03 docs on the new machine in order to be opened on the older machine. I guess it depends on what you use it for. I didn't have time to fool with getting Vista to work with what I need for work.

Yes, I do feel better about my computer security, but truthfully will feel a lot better when I get it all sorted out. Is it just me, or do you have to be a rocket scientist to understand SpywareBlaster? lol First of all, under Protection Status, Internet Explorer Protection, I ticked off both Active X Protection and Cookie Protection not being sure if I should do that. ie. Do I want to protect my PC from ALL Active X and ALL cookies? I just left the 'Block List' alone since SpywareBlaster has 355 items selected, and since I don't know what I want to block or not block. After doing this, Internet Explorer Protection is 'partially enabled'. I don't know if that's what I should have. I have protection enabled for Restricted Sites - that, I think I understand. Do I want to do a System Snapshot? And with the Secunia, when I downloaded it I set it to automatically update out-of-date programs. Should I have selected that option, or should I manually update out-of-date programs that it finds? To respond to your recommendations (and thank you for making them), near: 1. I do have Windows set to automatically update, so I'm good on that. I checked up update history, and the only updates it recommends at this time are 7 optional ones. I never done the optional updates. 2. I'm seeing more and more recommendations for the MSE. So it only updates and runs once a week and not daily. I guess this is sufficient? I'm not sure if I'm going to switch over my AVG for something else, but MSE is in the running. 3. Check, on the MalwareBytes. Do you usually run a full scan or a Quick Scan? I've been running the full scan mostly. 4.Check, on the SpywareBlaster (but I have the above questions on it). I still haven't downloaded the SuperAntispyware. 5. I downloaded the Secunia. 6. I haven't downloaded the WinPatrol yet. I have been wondering if AVG will have a problem with it, or vice versa. But we'll see.

before doing the system restore go into add remove programs and have her remove that specific MS update. that .net update has caused problems for many people and especially those on compaq for some reason. If she is unable to do that then go ahead and do the system restore to the date prior to the install of that update. Windows Vista System Restore Guide

On my vista computer I have SP2 along with IE 9 (not 8), btw.

I dimly recall something similar when I restored my vista computer prior to giving it away. The updates did not all sequence at once but I just kept trying to install whatever showed up when I called for updates. It took about three weeks in total, with more stuff showing up on weekends and quiet hours. Probably most of needed SP2 is already there in dribs and drabs.

Yes I took the computer back to factory settings and that is when it uninstalled the newest ie and I also think this is why the trial for windows 7 won't install

OK. You need to focus on getting windows up date working first before anything,

The next thing to try is running System file checker,

To run the System File Checker, complete these steps:

1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.

2. In the results area, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator. You will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue.

3. At the command prompt, type Sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.

You need to have Service pack 1 installed first, before service pack 2, so might want to check that. Here's a link
