Which Email service to use with Vista?

Hi, My computer has Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit version and the Email [Windows Mail] will not connect to the internet. I would like to download a web based Email service and not use Windows mail anymore. Is there any services that I could use that my new Email address would end with [@comcast.net]. so I could continue using my old address. Or is there any hopes in getting the current program repaired? Thanks

I thought Xfinity offered an email program but I'm not a Comcast subscriber so I could be wrong. However, I did find the following info that may be of some help to you.

If you want to do email thru a web page...then that's what it is...a web page. It isn't something that you download and install.

Of course there is hope of getting Windows Live Mail repaired...but you provided no information. What went wrong? Were there any error messages? It worked before and then it stopped working? Is WLM important to you or would another email client be just as good?

I don't use Fastmail myself, but many do and like it a lot. (It's based in Australia, I believe, as is bluebottle.com.) Anyway, Fastmail actually is known for having loads of other domains that you can use when you sign up for an account. Autumn, I don't think you need cooking classes. I never knew how to cook anything until I moved out of the house. My mom was seriously OCD and wouldn't let us in the kitchen. I literally taught myself how to cook basics with a cookbook called "The I Never Cooked Before Cookbook". It explained everything. For example, when it told you to boil something, it had photos of what boiling water looks like. It had photos to explain the difference between chopping, slicing, dicing and mincing. It was incredibly helpful since I didn't even know how to anything. I think I could pour cereal and make taste. I had never even made cookies before. I'm certainly no gourmet cook but after familiarizing yourself with the basics, you can start throwing things together with some success without taking a class, imho. Like, after cooking a few Mexican dishes using recipes, you learn the basic ingredients, flavor profiles for sauces and seasonings, and then just start throwing things together using those basics in different ways. Using beans, rice, various hot sauces and seasonings often used in Mexican dishes, some chiles, and then a variety of vegetables, you can make sautes, soups, salads, casseroles, whatever using meat/fish/poultry as your protein or even the cheese (if you're vegetarian or want to do a vegetarian meal once in awhile) or the beans (ditto for vegan eating). When I do this, things might not be the least bit authentic to that cuisine, and I substitute a lot so I don't have to run to the store for something, but if you have a pantry of basics, it's not that hard to throw together something tasty. I hate grocery shopping so I do wish someone would do that for me. I sometimes send DH but he always gets some odd stuff and spends too much, lol. And I really don't like thinking up what to cook so I'll often have DH grab the protein out of the freezer. Whatever he grabs, I cook. Or I'll just reach in and close my eyes and grab something. Batch cooking does help. I often will cook up a big pot of rice (usually a wild/brown rice combo) and keep a container in the fridge to heat up as a side or throw in a soup or casserole. I do the same with dry beans, peas and bulgurs. I always have couscous and quinoa on hand because they cook up quick if I'm out of rice. So sides are easy. A variety of fresh veggies and a few bags in the freezer of Asian and California blends make it easy to throw a veggie side dish together. I buy cleaned/bagged salad mixes, mixed greens, and baby spinach making it quick and easy to put together for a salad or toss in the last few minutes of a stir-fry or saute. And multi-meal planning works well. If I make a roast, I save some for French Dip sandwiches the next night. Or I might boil up a chicken or two and use the breasts for stir-fry and the meat off the rest of it for chicken enchiladas or some other casserole or a soup. At least once a week dinner is my own Muscoe soup or casserole using the stuff that is starting to go but isn't bad enough to throw out. Thanks for that, bpathome, as I just call it Clean Out the Fridge Food. Muscoe sounds more purposeful. We don't eat out much. I can't see paying $20 for a meal that I can make for $5 at home. And I figure the time to go there, order, wait, eat, and go home takes longer than it does for me to cook and clean up. I don't have a cooking gene or special skills. I just decided to be fearless in the kitchen. Most things you make, if they don't turn out right, are salvageable somehow. The rare times it's not, the dog enjoys a treat. :) I think of it as a way to play.

I used to have multiple Yahoo email accounts back when Yahoo clubs and IM were popular in the early 2000s. I had German, Italian, and French accounts (*.de, *.it, and *.fr), and I decided to pretend to be a woman (Thérèse D'Extase) for my French Yahoo profile, and she was also a dominatrix. Unfortunately, this attracted too many friend requests from men in Switzerland and France. I did have a fair number of friends through my German and Italian profiles, but I did get tired of chatting in German and Italian (sometimes at the same time), although I did find it good practice for switching between languages at the drop of a hat - something that I am not the best at doing. I had a long chat in German once through one of the German Yahoo groups only to find out that he was in Los Angeles and American. I lost interest in Yahoo after they stopped supporting clubs. My brother and I had a club called "Venice Beach Bros" and we did meet a few local people through that club, including Bathtub Girl, who used to have podcasts from her bathtub in Venice, just a few blocks from our house. After a while, I found the Yahoo popup IMs to get annoying. At that time I was also doing web design and hosting, and I managed POP email accounts for our clients. I really prefer this time of email to the free email, partly because it allowed me to save emails on hard drives.

This is a well-known story in Silicon Valley. Google Maps has been ahead from the start and has been eating Apple's lunch ever since. Apple Maps was in awkward, barely past beta form when Apple unveiled it. Buggy, glitchy, prone to crash. At the time, Google Maps was running at full speed as a reliable and already full featured app. Apple has been playing catchup all these years and at least according to the review linked below from a respected source, hasn't YET pulled even. A PR embarrassment for years. A head to head eval choose Google Maps as the better one. One surprising shortcoming that Apple Maps still has, according to the article, is that it can't handle a trip with more than one destinations. Huh? That's child's play for Google. Enter an ultimate destination, then stops along the way (as for specific routing for a trip or running errands), and Google handles that with ease. At a user level, Apple maps display is seen by some as a bit sparser and more comfortable. Personally, I think it's performance and reliability that matter and Apple Maps still falls short with dynamic rerouting. Waze is another navigation app that many people find useful, especially its up to the moment road information (crashes, speed traps, other problems) that users can upload for all to see. Google owns Waze and some of the crowdsourced info is also displayed in Google maps from time to time. A most useful capability of Google Maps I appreciate happens when I get meeting or appointment notices for my calendar that include an address. When it's time to go, I go to the car and open my calendar. After a couple of simple presses on the screen (that don't require entering the address), voila, Google Maps opens showing the navigation to the destination that I can immediately display for Nav purposes in the car using CarPlay. Sorry, I guess I explained it all wrong. As Anne said, Xfinity does have an online email program which my wife has trouble getting opened up to check and after using and enjoying Windows mail programs since 1998, does not like it. What we are looking for is a mail program that looks and acts like Windows mail and maybe will connect to the internet better. We have 2 computers and over the past 6 years had such mail problems with both. I don't know what causes it. I would like to download another program like Windows Mail, you know, 2 clicks and you are in, that might be better. Maybe Windows has such a program. Thank you all for trying to help.

I use Windows Mail with my Vista Home Premium 64 bit, and have never (knock on wood) had a problem with the internet connection and mail. It's always worked great for me.

What exactly is the problem? Did it just start not connecting for no reason? I probably shouldn't be asking since I'm not a computer expert, but I am curious as to why it won't connect for you.

Windows does have a mail program like that. It's called Outlook. Not Outlook Express. Just Outlook. But, currently, you must have a version of Windows Office on your system to access/use this program. If you do have Win.Office...then click on the program under All Programs and look for the Outlook listing. It's a good email program. It's my email program of choice. If you don't have Win. Office...you can always add it to your system if you want to buy it.

As an aside, I understand your wife's dislike of your ISP email program. I'm not overly fond of mine either but use it as a less personal mail box.

Both gmail and live/hotmail/outlook.com allow nearly unlimited aliases and the ability to send directly from any of those aliases without getting the "on behalf of" tagline added.

I've been using Windows Mail with my Vista home premium since Vista came out with no problems. It sounds like it may be more of a server problem with your internet provider than a problem with Windows Mail?

One downloadable program you can try is Thunderbird. And to set it up with a comcast email account, you can check this page.(It says it's for TB 16 and up, so it should have all the info you need to do that for the version of TB you'd be installing (24.5.0).)

A few others:

eM Client looks & feels like Outlook 2003 (not Outlook Express) as I recall and is more of a suite (including calendar). The free version only allows 2 accounts to be installed, but that's probably all you would need, based on your original post.

MailBird is popular, too. It looks and works just a bit differently than Windows Live Mail but may be worth a look.

FWIW, here is a link to Windows Essentials' help forum for Windows Live Mail, in case you want to search those threads for comcast questions/issues or ask a question yourself. :-)

Just for the record, after reading this thread at an email help site, esp. the reference to trojans and other malware, I would avoid Incredimail like the plague.

As far as an on board client, I used TB on my Vista system for as long as I can think back without any concerns, I even continue to use it on this V8.1.1 system.

You might not be aware, but TB has add-ons which will allow you to modify the client to a more personal basis.

Thanks to all that helped with my problem. After reading up on all the mentioned Email's, I chose Thunderbird as it was all I needed, Easy setup was mentioned and easy it was. Easier than falling off a log. It works very good. The next morning after installing it, I clicked on the Windows mail icon just by habit and Thunderbird came up. Just what I wanted. You can search the forum for threads that may pertain to an issue you're having or ask questions yourself. Like here, lots of nice and knowledgeable people there to help.You can also search the TB "knowledge base" (link on the right-hand side of the forum page) for help with issues before posting questions there.

FWIW, I'm not saying you shouldn't post questions here. But the TB forum is, practically speaking, the place to start. :-)
