What do you mean, not enough free space?

I have a 1TB external Seagate, plug & play. My Asus hard drive is 750GB. I figured 1TB would be plenty to make a system image.

So, when I tried I got this message:
Not enought disk space to create the volume shadow on the storage location. Make sure that for all volumes to be backed up, the min required disk space for shadow copy creation is available. This applies to both the backup storage destination and volumes included in the backup. Min requirment: For volume less than 500 megabytes, the min is 50 meg free space. For volume more than 500 megabytes, the min is 320 megabyes free space. Recommended: At least 1 gig free space on each volume if volume size is more that 1 gig.

The auto image backup (Win8) wanted to backup 3 drives (I could not select what I wanted)
1) C drive
2) EFI sys partition
3) Recovery

It indicated that backup could take 61 GB disk space.

Any idea why all this won't fit on a hard drive much larger than my computer drive?

A lot of people have the same error / message. I don't have an answer other then use a third party back up tool instead of Windows.

Go ahead an Google Not enough disk space to create the volume shadow on the storage location.

EaseUS ToDo free ... faster than windows, smaller backups too. Only maybe main 3 scenario's.. so pretty easy for most to figure out.

Right now on win8 I'm using windows 7 backup for folders and EaseUS for sys images. EaseUS reimaged win8 once, it seemed fast for me. 53gb windows drive = 20gb image at medium compression. Somewhere slightly more than 10 minutes to reimage.

I love beets. Especially ones fresh from the garden then roasted. Then there's Harvard Beets and pickled beets. I've been craving roasted brussels sprouts, but neither husband nor dd like them...dd used to, but now she's so anti-mom she's sworn off lots of stuff she used to like. Grits I learned to like when I was in Grad school in Billsburg, VA. I liked to go to the Chickahominy House to have a Virginian breakfast: eggs over easy, a slice of Virginia ham and grits, with a buttermilk biscuit. You could have redeye gravy, but I preferred to smush my eggs into the grits. Then there's egg/cheese/grits casserole. Cornbread is best slathered with butter, or drizzled with honey. I rarely do both anymore, but I used to. I brought rolls for the trip to MI to have Thanksgiving. I was up until 2:00 am on Thursday making them. I intended to make whole wheat "brown and serve" rolls, but I didn't hear the timer ding, and so in a panic, I baked them completely so I could taste test and make sure they were edible (they were, although some were big enough to be hamburger buns). For the young fry I made PIllsbury crescent rolls...as I know that dd and others prefer those. On the way home today she was munching on one and said "Oh, what is is that makes crescent rolls so yummy." "in a word," I said, "lots of fat." I have to say that driving up to Hastings, MI on Thursday morning was wonderful. A typical Michigan Thanksgiving day--misc. flurries and the sun breaking through glowering clouds over golden and russet fields which had been lightly frosted with a diamond dust. Breathtaking.

The problem with anecdotes about old Sub-Zero units (and any other fridges) is that they have nothing to do with the ones they make today. Even though Sub Zero is still probably the best fridge you can buy, I'm not believing for a second the new ones are as good. Back in the 80s I doubt Sub-Zero was using the cheapo Brazilian compressors, Mexican electronics, and Asian fan motors they do today. There have been complaints about reliability and repairability and I remember reading in Consumer Reports a few years back that they were one of the least reliable. Of course I'm not trying to say those things are the norm for them and I'm pretty sure the CR thing was because of a temporary issue they were having that they got around to fixing, but my point is.... just like all the other brands, they aren't perfect.

Seriously, Honestly? I go to the Gallery and spend hours and hours going over all the latest pictures that Oceanna posted. Today, a little over 3 hours at the Gallery (Gee, thanks Oceanna! *wink*). Got nothing, zippo, nada done. Way too many ideas doing Funny Car crashes in my grey matter for me to make a firm decision on my projects so might as well go look-see everyone elses projects. Actually, truth be told there is no name for my 'style'. Believe me, I've searched. No way to describe it online so that I can get a decent search going. Because there is no name for my style, I come to a point where I get stuck ----- (the fact that my ideas have to be done on a miniscule budget makes it all that more difficult.) Kitchen not finished --- going on 15 months. Backyard/Garden Decor not done --- going on 7 months. Family Room not done --- going on 20 months. Sunroom not done --- going on 28 months. Master Bedroom not done -- going on 9 months. (Won't count the Master bath because in all fairness, we just started it. But I'm sure I'll come to a grinding halt there, too.) Why? Because I'm stuck, can't make a decision and stick to it because I can't find ideas for what I see in my mind's eye. I know there's got to be inspiration out there for what I'm trying to create but so far, haven't found it. I get ideas, tips and opinions from all the talented folks here and put them into play and all starts looking good but to head to the finish line? Nope. Isn't happening. So, I go to all the neato new photos on the Gallery side, thanks to Oceanna, kill a ton of time and not get a thing accomplished. Then I feel guilty for not accomplishing anything and I start the whole process over again. Amity, who is heading over to the gallery, again. lol

My black lab and border collie mix have taken to checking out what's on the counter lately. Might have something to do with 17+ and 19 year old cats who don't belong to the clean your plate club. They coordinate with the marble and black granite very well, but it makes me chuckle to think how silly (and uncomfortable) they would look if I ever put them up on the counter. The Great Pyreneese? Better be a BIG island! LOL I meant to say earlier that I would not want a movable island. I would have no place to move it to where it wouldn't be a bigger problem. Now, I suppose that you could custom build something that had an island that fit under a counter height table(would still allow some storage but would have to preserve leg room for the table) you might be able to address that issue -- even use it as a table extension at holidays, but one of the things I love about my island now that I moved the cooktop out is having a sink there. I also really want power there. We use the waffle maker and blender mostly st the island. Again, if you really engineered the thing, I suppose you could have a power strip on the side of that island, a cord running down the leg and an outlet inset into your floor to plug it in when it's in place and be covered and smooth when it's not. But all of that seems like a hassle. In my mind, you probably either have room for an island or don't and you will wind up using it one way or the other. You might as well figure it our and make it the best you can in the right configuration rather than trade off. For example, if you don't do an island, you can extend your counters to 30" depth and have more workspace there, but you can't do that if you try to squeeze in an island. My kitchen is less than 14 feet wide -- pretty minimal for a 3 ft wide island (cabinets are 34", so it is 36" overall). Had we made the perimeter cabinets 30" deep, I'd have had 8 feet to trek across from stove to sink and half the work space. No question I'd rather have the island.

Are these 3rd party backups safe? Are they downloaded programs to my computer or are my system image backup "somewhere out ther"? How do they work? I'm reading up on these but don't understand.

Acronis True Image Home 2012

The one above you can try for free, it's a trial version, you download it 215 MB. Why not fool around with it and see how you like it, I'm sure you can put the image on your external drive.

I found Acronis UI rather difficult to navigate, so even though I had purchased it, I use EaseUS ToDo free version just as mikie recommends. It is simple to use, you can back up exactly what you want to, and if you ever have a need to restore, the restoration process is very easy. I had a hard drive die, so when I installed the new one, I used the restore function of EaseUS ToDo to put everything back on the new drive, from the external drive, including operating system. Highly recommend this program.

Thanks for the replies. I was checking out the above recommended, and still have to ask if Easeus is a program I download to my computer to backup or if I'm backing up to a cloud-like place where all my stuff isn't in only my possession? ....while it might be encrypted, will my system image with files, customer info for work, etc be out there for potential hackers? Exactly how does it work? I need to know my info is safe.

You won't get cloud backup. Local to your drive, or portable or burn.
They might have a cloud option, I doubt it would be free .. but if youre making a system or drive image.. those are more than a huge uploads and huge downloads too if needed.

You will download the program to your computer. Then you choose where to put your backups. I use an external hard drive. You can also use DVDs, USB drives, etc. No, as far as I know, there is no cloud storage involved. The program remains on my computer, and when there is an update, I am notified that one is available.
