Problems with new iPod, bonjour and downloads

What version of Windows are you running?

Can you check your system messages to see if there are any error messages about bonjour?

I could be wrong, but I don't think you need bonjour for itunes and an ipod, just if you are sharing music on the network.

Apple folks tend to be most familiar with getting apple things to work with other apple things and they tend to make sure itunes works well with apple and mostly works with windows. When problems arise, they're quick to blame MS. My wife had a problem with audio books with one release of itunes, we took her laptop to the apple store and the "geniuses" helped her by removing all of her audio books and adding one of theirs, then declaring it fixed. When she added hers back, it didn't work. They then said it was a MS problem. I did a little searching on the web and discovered it was a bug with that particular release of itunes--it would only work if you had fewer than X (I forget the number) audio books (which was why it worked when they loaded the single book).

I think bp is correct. You don't need Bonjour. I use an Ipod and keep bonjour and various other Apple services shut off because they run in start-up and slow things down. I don't know if you can install ITunes without it, but you could shut it down in msconfig.

I'm running Windows XP.

In order for the latest version of iTunes to download you must allow Bonjour to download too. The install is hanging up when it hits the services section and for some reason Bonjour thinks I don't have Administrator privileges. I do have them and no one else does on my PC. I've spent days trying to fix this now. I'm going to the Apple store today, but I'm not too confident that they will be able to help me....

Other ideas:

Right click the installer file and run as administrator.. or..

Type this into runbox services.msc When the services window opens see if you can find Bonjour service in the list, if you do double click it and set the service automatic.

oops sorry XP will not have the right click run as administrator option,
carry on with the services,msc thing...

Bonjour is not under Services. I suspect it was wiped out when the Apple tech was helping me. They wanted me to get rid of all traces of iTunes before I tried another install....

I am trying to download the latest version of iTunes.It loads everything up until about 3/4 done. Then when the "starting services" section starts the download stops and I get the message about Bonjour.

In the programs file folder folder did Apple tech have you manually Delete any ITunes folders to make sure all ITunes related files are gone?

Did the Apple Tech have you try to install an older version of ITunes to see if that would work, like Version 9.0 in the link below.

We did delete all iTunes folders in program files.

I went to the Apple store today. They said that I need Windows 7 or Vista and I'm running XP.

She did not suggest installing an older version of iTunes, but I am going to try that now.

Okay, so I installed version 9 of iTunes. It loaded fine and all of my songs are there...BUT I'm back to my original Christmas Day problem--it recognizes my iPod, but not my daughter's new iPod touch. They were able to activate her new iPod at the Apple Store so she can use the apps, etc. but she can't access her music.

I am really leery of installing Windows 7 or Vista, when I keep seeing others on the internet message boards who already have one of those OS and still are having iTunes problems.

My Internet connection is awful today. I know you have battled with this and others too. If you can search for these key words iPod touch not reconized by xp and review some of the links just might find something, not being an Ipod user can't provide first hand experience.

Windows XP

Quit iTunes and disconnect the iPhone / Ipod
Go to the Start menu, thenthe Control Panel and open Administrative Tools, then Services.
Select "Apple Mobile Device" then "Stop the service."
After it is stopped, click "Start the service."
Connect the iPhone / Ipod again, launch iTunes and check for recognition.

one place I send people with ipod issues is ipod lounge they are very familiar with all things ipod you might try that forum for more hands on help from those ipod folks.
