How do you download music?

I know, I know. I should know how to do this, but I wanted to wait until Napster settled down and technology got better. I am about to get a phone with an MP3 player (and FM radio if I find it too daunting) and I'd like to try it out. What service do you use? What should I watch out for?

Actually you are too late for the good old days of music downloads. The viruses and the jerks have taken over and it's too risky now to download without paying a fee.
Also our awaremess of what constitutes "intellectual property" has become more clarified, and well it's not nice tos teal something that someone is selling for money.
There are many sites, some you pay a fee for unlimited downloads and others you pay by the album or the song. Find somewhere that has the kind of music you like, join the program, send your fees via PayPal and you are in business.
The file sharing programs were fun but are also very dangerous....think of it as STD for computers! You upolad your infected file, I down load it and infect all my files and then I upload it and there you go. Soon a huge percentage of the files are infected.
It works much like a photo sharing site like Flicker or photobucket.

I've been wanting to do this too. I think I'm going to go through the Walmart site. I think downloads are 94 cents.

I'm still trying to decide on an MP3 player. These new technology jumps are always a little paralyzing for me. Once my toes are wet, I'm all in, but I stand at the shore for a while :)

The problems are these: 1) All "free" download (sharing) sites are illegal. And they're still searching and prosecuting nationwide. I've read recently that the average settlement is something like $3,600.00. 2) Since the days of Napster when everyone had to be at one place, the selection available has been incredibly compromised. Maybe you'll find what you want of maybe you won't. 3) Many of these site are LOADED with crap you don't want to mess with. Can't remember the name of the one based out of Vanu Atu, but they became, essentially, bug-ware central. 4) For whatever reason, you will be finding MANY mis-identified entries and all manner of deception among the offered downloads and their purported quality. If you want to mess with all that, be my guest.

Import the songs into iTunes: Insert the CD, and wait for iTunes to show the songs in the CD, and then click on "Import." The songs will automatically create a Library of songs within iTunes. Once a library is created, if you now connect the iPod to your computer, iTunes will automatically transfer the songs to the iPod. Of course, you can also download music from the Internet with iTunes. There is a PC as well as a Mac version of iTunes. The CD that comes with the iPod has both versions, but it's a good idea to update the application every now and then. For iTunes to do all that, you must set its "Preferences." There is something else about the iPod, and soon other products: Some car stereos (look at the Crutchfield catalog) are iPod ready, while others require an optional electronic box. If you use one of these radios and have an iPod, you no longer need a CD changer. All you have to do is to connect the iPod to the radio, or to the control box, and the radio's display show the songs being played. You can scroll to whatever song you have in the iPod from the radio display. If you have 10,000 songs in your iPod, you can drive across the US listening to your music. The control box, keeps the iPod's battery fully charged. Other companies should jump on this technology any time now.

How do you download fonts from internet?

Carla, the fonts will come in a zip type file and you will need something like PKunzip or WinZip to open them. Then just go to the font sites and save the fonts to your computer. Unzip the files and then go to the control panel. You will see a folder named fonts. Double click on the fonts folder. Go to File - Install. You can browse to wherever you unzipped the fonts to. Make sure the name of the font shows up in the spce below and click on it once to select it, then click OK. It will be installed and ready to use! I do not use iTunes or any Apple products. I still have my collection of CDs, but I have them stored in books so that they do not take up much space. I have ripped all my CDs (using Windows Media Player), and then I transfer the music I like best onto thumb drives that I take with me. I use a thumb drive at work and listen to music using Winamp (not my favorite program, but I've been using is for many years at work), and at home on my computer I use AIMP, another free program that I like better than Winamp. In the rest of the house, I plug a thumb drive into our sound system and listen to using through that, and in my car, I have a CD player (no USB port), and so I listen to MP3s that I have stored on a CD disc, which will hold quite a few. My brother got a new sound system for his truck that has a USB port, and so we use thumb drives for that. Neither my brother nor I like iTunes, and we both do sound editing on MP3s, which is easier to do than with iTunes. I refuse to buy anything from Apple. I do listen to the radio occasionally, as we have a good university station here in Westchester from Loyola Marymount: KXLU. The university is very close to the beach, and so a lot of the DJs sound like surfers and can be a bit ditzy, but I'm okay with that. My clock radio alarm is set to that station.

I thought as much Linda. My husband has free reign over the computer at home and was using Kazaa. The last time he formatted the hard drive (gee? I wonder why?), it didn't get added back. I really thought that was it!

I looked at Walmart's Lisa. I am also thinking about Yahoo. I have their radio and I like it pretty well. Their range of artists fit me.

iTunes

Good for music, podcasts, streaming radio, movies, tv shows. All good stuff.

Compatible with Windows, you don't need an iPod either. Just a computer.

DH downloads from usenet groups using Free Agent software & hasn't had any problems with viruses or spyware.

For myself & for the reasons stated by Linda C (plus it's a whole lot less complicated), I use iTunes.

You have to be careful with ITunes. I use that exclusively because I have an IPod but all the songs you download from ITunes is in AAC format which isn't supported by most MP3 players. I don't know about cell phones but you'd better make sure before spending money on songs and not be able to listen to them.

That's true - it's basically intended to support sales of iPods. But, you can burn CDs - and I've uploaded some of those to Windows Music Player. Don't know if that helps?

Of course, if you want it on a phone, you could get an iPhone (but there are a whole lot of reasons why you wouldn't want to yet - AT&T is one reason, and cost another)

It looks like it supports AAC. I was waiting on the phone, but it is here as of last night, so I am only hindered by getting up the nerve to jump in! Thanks for the thoughts, I think I have a handle on it.

Find a site which hosts my artists and pay for it unless I get really brave, because that can be ok (although, I can see the legality issues and I'll just pay.), and jump.

Robin...depending what phone service you bought...most have music available to download...just a thought.

I love it! Played with it all day yesterday. I can download to my computer and play it at work or upload it to my phone. Some I have to pay for and some are paid for, for this month. Had the same thought L, but Nokia's site is only European! I don't get that one??? Maybe they're waiting until they can compete with I-stuff, it would make sense, as Nokia is ultra user friendly.
