Downloading Music?

I think IÂd like to download music from the internet; but IÂm a bit intimidated by it, and hesitant about it. Do any of you download music? What sites are good/safe? Don't worry - just do it/donÂt even think about doing it? Any other tips? Thanks...

I don't care for any current music.
I use Limewire for classic tunes.

I also use Limewire...never had a problem.

only download MP3s
check size of the file before downloading..a 420kb tune would be suspicious.
after downloading scan the tunes with your AV programme before opening...your AV programme should be scanning as they download.

The problems are these: 1) All "free" download (sharing) sites are illegal. And they're still searching and prosecuting nationwide. I've read recently that the average settlement is something like $3,600.00. 2) Since the days of Napster when everyone had to be at one place, the selection available has been incredibly compromised. Maybe you'll find what you want of maybe you won't. 3) Many of these site are LOADED with crap you don't want to mess with. Can't remember the name of the one based out of Vanu Atu, but they became, essentially, bug-ware central. 4) For whatever reason, you will be finding MANY mis-identified entries and all manner of deception among the offered downloads and their purported quality. If you want to mess with all that, be my guest.

well you can actually buy a cd in a music store and then make copies of it and that would be yours, or you can buy the music at online music stores like amazon, google music or play store now, or sites like Rhapsody. Amazon MP3 Rhapsody

Probably the most "User Friendly" Player, software, is Music Jukebox put out by J Rivers. Probably had it for over 10 years now. It plays CD's, Mp3's Wma's, even videos (Mpeg, AVI etc). It's Library function is really nice and since I have a "Huge Collection" it makes it very easy to go to any song or artist or even type of music I want. The esiest way to have the music available to other cmptrs is to use the Memory "Flash cards" well actually more like a "Memory Thumb" probably much like an Ipod, but since I not a "Mac Head" I can't tell ya for sure. You just plug it into your USB port on your cmptr. the cmptr sees it as a drive, drag the songs, videos etc etc to it, then plug it in any other cmptr to play it. Good Luck! Gary

Cynic, lots of good points in your post. :) However, I do think WMT runs small businesses out of business because of the prices. WMT buys in bigger quantities and therefore pays less wholesale than the Mom & Pops'. They can then afford to sell for less and still make the same or better profit. The practice of changing their price at the register for something that a customer can prove is being advertised for less elsewhere IS undercutting and WILL, if enough people do it often, drive the smaller folks out of business. You are right that people will go anywhere and put up with anything just to get something for a few pennies less. I guess I've been as guilty of that as anyone. If one really COULD get everything on their list at WMT, then that would be wonderful, but even with "Supercenter" status, there are still lots of things they don't have, or maybe they'll only have one particular model, which may not meet your needs. Plus you have to walk all over the store just to find that out. Then you've got the extra trip to make somewhere else, say, Radio Shack, Staples, Hobby Lobby. Just to clarify, when I complain, I never get personal with the person who is taking my complaint, just because of my experience at the other end. I don't scream at them, threaten them or call them names. And if I don't get satisfaction, I don't call that particular person back and demand to know why. I understand they're just the person the company pays (not enough) to be in the middle and I try hard to be kind when I'm on the phone. Now, if I could actually talk to Corporate, that might be different! I didn't unload about EVERYTHING I was frustrated about in the world, just about everything at WMT, which happens to be the narrow aisles, the long lines at the check-out, the inconveniences at the pharmacy and the fact that they keep giving you these little cash register tapes with a website where you can go to fill out a survey, except they never ask the right questions and there's no place for remarks. I also told them I felt WMT has gotten too big and prosperous to care whether they lose a customer here and there. Our Homeland grocery store has a membership card that you get for free and then they have to scan it so you can get what they have on sale for the sale price. It's kind of annoying but, oh well. A few times, I've forgotten my card and the sales clerk will scan one she has there at the register, rather than have me walk out of there leaving my full basket behind. But what it is, is a way to track people's purchasing habits. I don't know how it is for everyone else, but since I go to three stores plus a Dollar General and sometimes Big Lots, it doesn't show a true picture of what I buy. I suspect there are lots of folks who do the same. So the results of a survey, in my case, would be pretty skewed. I realize I limit myself when I just use e-mail. But the person from WMT who called me just told me to call somewhere else. I've seen this "handing off of the customer" before. When there's a problem they don't know what to do about, they give you another number to call. You call that number and they refer you back to where you called in the first place because they don't know how to solve your problem either. But the main reason why I will not call the number given (which I had from the very beginning, as well as their e-mail address) is because I don't want to wait in the queue for so few dollars. I asked Corporate for a refund several times and each time they just completely ignored that part of my e-mail. If Corporate had any interest in helping me, why did they have someone call me JUST to give me a number where I could be helped? Why couldn't they have contacted someone there and have had one of THEM call me? That might've made some sense. I have given the music download card back to DD, she will see if she can get it to work from her computer. Then if it doesn't work she can decide if it's worth it to her to pursue. WMT certainly doesn't have the market cornered on music downloads, and if they don't care that they lost a customer, that's OK. DGS has been buying his music at Amazon.com lately. Downloading is faster and they have a better selection. They even have a few free downloads.

I have to caution against using any of the peer to peer programs like limewire and others of that type. IF you choose to, be absolutely sure you know how to use it and set it up so your pc is not open to any type of access.

There are some good safe free sites to get music from but you have to be very cautious because many of the sites that offer free music also give you free viruses along with it.

I like a site called garageband.com where up and coming bands put their music and allow people to download it and rate it and give opinions, have found some great stuff there.
Any file you get from online make absolutely sure you scan it with your AV and antimalware scanners (right click on the file and choose scan) before you ever open it on your pc.

do your self a favor and go to google and do a search for dangers of limewire before you even consider using any of the peer to peer programs.

also I will caution that if you have the need to go to security help forums which are help forums that aid in removal of infections they will not help you till you do remove those type programs from your pc because they are usually the source of infections.

if you do a search on this forum there have been several that asked where to find good free music and there were links provided.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I appreciate the tips; and the links (which I will check out)... I don't think I'll rush to download music at this time - I'm kind of paranoid about viruses, etc.

txKen, where do you download the music to - ie. a special folder? I looked at the links provided - sounds like we shouldn't use 'My Documents'?

I use Archive.org to legally download music from bands that have policies that allow concerts to be recorded and shared. It also has a lot of movies that are in the public domain.

I've used itunes and paid for a few songs. It is easy to use (I felt like you - intimidated). Any music you download should wind up in 'My Music' folder. Look at your Start menu. ITunes is automated. You pay for a song (.99) and it goes in automatically. You can also record music from a CD and put it in ITunes. My husband rents CD's for free at the library and records them on iTunes. I've never tried the free sites.

I have 'temp' folders I've created on my hard drive, called 01Temp, 02Temp, etc.
Anything I download goes into one of these folders, gets 'scanned' by my antivirus, and then I move the MP3 into a folder I've created called "MP3".
I go to the MP3 players' library, and add the song.

Unless you are paying for the tunes - you may end up with a huge fine.

It has been in the news recently. A Minnesota woman, Jammie Thomas-Rasset, was fined 1.92 million dollars for sharing 24 songs in June.

Joel Tenenbaum was fined 675,000 on Friday for downloading and sharing 30 songs.

Boy - I just don't think it is worth it - not to mention the problems you can run into - like RC described.

If you have paid a fee to Limewire and think you are in the clear to d/l music without paying per song - YOU ARE NOT!! YOu have paid a support fee - to Limewire. You really were ripped off. You are still illegally d/l songs.

iTunes works great for the iPod - but not for other types of MP3 players. I only use an iPod now - so I am happy with iTunes.

Amazon is one site you can purchase music for decent prices and they from time to time offer free downloads from their site. Here is one of those free offers.

You are still illegally d/l songs.

The OP lives in Canada where it is not illegal to download songs...so this is not a concern.

Thanks for your input everyone. Yes; I live in Canada, but didn't know about the legalities of downloading 'free' music.

I do see the 'My Music' folder - it has some sample songs - 'course I don't really like any of them. lol So... I'll either download to that folder, or do as txKen suggested, and make up a temp folder first. Not even sure I'll download anything. I'll think on it for another decade - lol. I was looking at the music at Amazon.com today, though.

I download wavs all the time right click save target to desktop, all kinds of music, and all for FREE, then I later move into my burn prog. and burn to CD's, have many sites on my favs list, easiest thing to do ever!!!
