Remember a few years ago about the downloading of music

Seems to me like the people who had been downloading a bunch of the music for free got charged for it....is that right??? or do any of you remember..

I was just wondering about the watching of movies online...if it is illegal or what...

Only because I recently was given a web site address that you can watch movies..

Some are recent releases...

Anybody know anything about all this?

Patti, when you say charged for it, you mean they got arrested and fined, right?

Anything with a copyright is protected and unless the originator is giving it out for free, then downloading it without paying from any other source is piracy.

Movies aren't any different than music.

How do they get by with these huge websites? Why don't they crack down on the ones running these websites?

Matt, it could have been me. I sent out a lot of Amaryllis seeds all over the states. I've also sent CC cuttings and Brunfelsia plants and cuttings. I hope you identify the person who sent the goodies to you.

Thanks, but none of the above are the one which I had. This is a really old one that you could purchase at the store and put on your computer. If you did not pop the balls fast enough, they would spill over the top of the sides of the container and the game would end. It was the music that was so addicting. Wish I could remember the name of it so I can quit obsessing!

Sorry, I've been away a bit. To take your comments in order, Kudzu: Well, I'm glad to know it isn't something MS is doing, but there is really no way someone could have gotten access to my computer, unless they came in as a burglar and left no other signs. We have very few guests, and the layout of the house makes it impossible for anyone to enter the computer room without our knowing it. I'm beginning to lean more and more to your second suggestion, that the files came along with something else I downloaded. I did download a video on YouTube a few days ago, and now a search on the site doesn't bring it up anymore, which is strange. DA: I did click to see when some of the files were created. Several were from 2005 and 2006. Do those dates refer to the time they were "created" on my computer (though I do not think I had bought this computer yet in 2005--too lazy to go hunting for the receipt tonight), or to their original creation on someone else's? If it is when they got onto my computer and I just hadn't checked the All Users folder for such things, I am still left with the puzzle of why some got into my personal regular music folder. However, I usually access My Music through the Start menu, but I had gone through My PC>C:\, etc., when I came across this problem. Can it be that the files were there all along, as Gndms suggested, and I just never happened to notice them? (In that case, I will owe everyone an apology for taking your time, and also feel like the boy who cried wolf--though unintentionally!) So long as nothing sinister is going on, I will be content. RavenCajun: I ran scans as you suggested and all seems well there. However, yesterday I checked the History section of MSE and found this: But it wouldn't have anything to do with the strange files, would it? I am wondering how it "exploits" the computer and whether or not it did any exploiting of mine before it was detected and removed. This is the first time MSE has found anything "severe." Up till now, it has always been just cookies. Didn't find any suspicious log-on activity. RUBotted found nothing, too, but thanks for telling me about it; I have Bookmarked the site for future reference. When I checked the administrative tools and event viewer, there was a great long list of events listed as warnings, dating back to April of 2006, which I am assuming was when I bought the PC. All those "warnings" are scary. Can you tell me what they mean? Should I be doing something about them? Thank you all so much for helping me. Just as a final touch for my peace of mind, I am going to run Kaspersky's scan now.

Please don't misunderstand - the farm people valued their animals and cared for them well. On the other hand - the cattle provided milk and meat, and local dogs that got together and travelled in packs, chasing cattle, would be dealt with severely (read, "shot"). They tried to train the dogs to herd cattle - some would go to the pasture at milking time and bring the cows to the barn for milking. It could well have been that the Grandfather felt a deep sense of love for the young lads. I thought that the Grandfather's act was a bit severe - but he had a reason that was logical to him, and his reply to the boys likely would have been, "Get over it!". As several have said, life was hard for such people and there was little margin for soft-heartedness. Would you be willing to have soft-heartedness and hunger co-exist? Quite likely the Grandfather was marksman enough that he could have shot the dirt beside the dog to have been thrown up and both stung and frightened the dog, but he took more direct action, as many did. Life didn't have the nuances for them that it does for many of us. The idea of someone shooting over the heads of kids invading their land was quite foreign to me. I have four barn cats, one of which loves to be scratched and petted - but if I pick her up, she jumps down. Another cat lets me pet him, and enjoys it some, but is a bit reluctant. Drat him, he's a bit of a scairdey cat, but when I pour feed into each of three or four dishes in turn ... he has to be there to eat immediately from all four dishes in turn! A half-grown kitten that I didn't see until it could run pretty well has got to where it'll let me pet it when it's looking for feed, but not at other times. Its mother will follow me around, even quite closely ... but if my hand gets a bit too close ... she draws blood. It is nigh impossible for modern, city-raised people to understand what life was like for such impoverished people who, as several have said, hunted for meat in the woods and fields. I'm glad that you felt comfortable enough with this place to have come to share your question. By extension ... many people who live in other parts of the world look at life very differently than we, and I think that at times it would be well if we were to sit down with them to learn of their ways - and to share our viewpoints. It seems to me quite likely that we would find that we had more in common than appeared at first, as I think we came to realize regarding this situation. When I was a kid, some folks in town had a metal-lined wooden box that looked something like modern fridges and men drove horse-drawn boxy wagons with tons of ice in them down the street, carrying a block into many houses to put into the top compartment. We on the farm pumped cold water by hand from the well in the yard to put into a pan in the basement, where we stored butter, meat and other perishables in bowls floating in the water, changing it as it warmed. Within a few years, they built refrigerators. Within a few years after that, they were building them to last for 40 years ... now they build them to last for 10 years. I've heard that for the world's people to live in the fashion to which we've become accustomed (in about 3 generations) ... we'd need the resources of four planets similar to that on which we live. We are hugely wasteful. We have a lot to learn from those people who lived more simply. And as more jobs are shifting overseas, our descendants are going to be learning them. Several areas of the seas that used to teem with fish are now almost barren - we didn't practise conservation. Our kids and grandkids will suffer the consequences. We still have about the cheapest food in the world ... but one doubts whether that will last much longer. Currently, many thousands of U.S. and Canadian families are about half a dozen paycheques from being on the street ... but we've forgotten how to forage for food, as our forebears did, out of necessity. We are much more brittle, less resourceful and adaptable. Good wishes for a really fine week ahead. ole joyful

They are cracking down bigtime, but it's a global problem.

A lot of these websites are hosted in Asia where it's more difficult to enforce copyrights.

And you need to closely examine the terms of usage - some of these websites put language into their TOS that says sharing copyrighted movies and music is illegal. That means they are off the hook if one of their users gets caught. The user gets prosecuted, but the website doesn't. Read the TOS for Limewire and Kazaa!

Students are a big problem (as in the link above) - they just aren't sensitized to taking intellectual property as being theft. You can see that universities and colleges are taking measures to curtail piracy.

Producers are trying to eliminate piracy at the source as well. For example people aren't allowed to carry cameras into movie theaters. I remember one news report about a man that was arrested with a camera in his belt buckle! They are also implementing rigid security in the print labs, where one lost print can mean a million pirated DVDs on the market.

Producers have also gone to a same day, same date opening for big movies. That means it opens around the world on the same day instead of rolling an opening out on different days for different continents. That stops someone from pirating a movie in the US and selling illegal DVDs in other countries where the movie hasn't opened yet.

Anything that is copyrighted is protected by law. "Free" downloads should always be examined carefully.

Many 'free' sites are also sources of viruses and spyware (spyware reads information off your computer)! Be very cautious about accessing these sites because you may be downloading lots more than just a movie.

I think legal streaming of movies usually cost money, but yes, there are many places online that will show them to you free. Legal? Probably not -- due to copyright infringements --- but many laws need to still to be written for the internet (so who really knows?). And, as someone mentioned, the sites may be able to get away with it because they personally aren't the ones watching the movies, you are. They put something out and you steal it --who gets in trouble?

I'd go with there's no such thing as a free lunch. If they are new to theater releases, you gotta know you shouldn't be watching them for free (so I doubt that defense would hold up in court). And, I know it's tempting, but it just smells wrong. Just because you can take something for free, doesn't necessarily mean you should. -Make it a Blockbuster night.

whether you can get in trouble for viewing depends on the source of the material and your ISP. people outside of this country, esp asia as mentioned, put everything and anything you can imagine, up for free. you can view or download it at your own risk. how do you get caught?? your ISP monitors all content going back & forth and depending on the volumne & type can warn you or drop you. they all monitor everyone, even when they are as big as brighthouse/road runner.

BTW the college kids thing is different. colleges provide internet to students who sign a 'contract/agreement' essentially saying they will not do anything illegal while using the university provided service. colleges receive millions or probably close to billions of $$ of free software/hardware & services from internet and puter companies and they themselves are requirred by the providers of all this free stuff to have these agreements w/ students inorder to receive aid. it basically boils down to students are not paying for this stuff and they then break the agreement and the college has the right to fine them or expell them, very fair IMO. ~ liz
